While white supremacists plan to rally in D.C. this weekend, counterprotests are expected to dwarf them in number.

Jason Kessler, the organizer of last year’s deadly rally in Charlottesville, secured permits months ago for an anniversary event in D.C. called Unite the Right 2. Kessler’s group was originally slated to return to Charlottesville, but late last month, in the face of the city’s refusal to grant him a permit, Kessler said he was switching gears to focus solely on the D.C. event.

With such noted racists as David Duke expected to speak, Washingtonians have organized a plethora of counterprotests and events, some of which are slated to take place days before the rally even begins.

Here’s a comprehensive rundown:

FRIDAY, AUGUST 10:

Teach-In and Interfaith Vigil

Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton and Congressman Jamie Raskin of Maryland are holding a “teach-in and interfaith vigil” this Friday August 10 from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Washington Hebrew Congregation (3935 Macomb St. NW, Washington, DC 20016). The teach-in will have a keynote speaker (Reverend William J. Barber of Repairers of the Breach) and a panel discussion called “Developing Effective Responses to Eliminate Hate.”

“Because the First Amendment protects all speech, even hate speech, those of us who profoundly disagree with such messages must find effective and creative ways to respond. Our teach-in will promote community engagement and feature experts and leaders who have spent their lives effectively responding to hate and bigoted speech, while respecting constitutional First Amendment principles,” Norton said in a press release about the event.

Shabbat Service: A Shabbat of Peace

After the teach-in, the Washington Hebrew Congregation will host a Shabbat service at 6 p.m.

“As the possibility of hate encroaches our city with the planned ‘Unite the Right’ rally on August 11-12, we choose peace and love. Please join us for Shabbat services as we celebrate the unity of the human family,” the Temple’s site says. The event is free, but they ask that you pre-register. It will also be livestreamed.

Free School Action Camp in preparation for protest

Black Lives Matter D.C., along with a coalition of other local activist organizations, will be holding a workshop in preparation for Sunday’s protests on August 10th from 3 p.m. – 9 p.m. at St. Stephen & the Incarnation Episcopal Church at 1525 Newton St NW. The action camp will focus on teaching people their rights when demonstrating, as well as self-defense.

SATURDAY, AUGUST 11:

A Mindful Response

The Western Presbyterian Church, together with National Capital Presbytery and Friends, is hosting an event on Saturday night at the Foggy Bottom Metro station, where Unite the Right is slated to begin its march the next day.

The service will start at 7 p.m. at the Western Presbyterian Church at 2401 Virginia Ave NW, and will conclude with a short walk to the Foggy Bottom Metro, where the group will “offer prayer aloud and in chalk on the ground where marchers will take their first steps the next day.”

SUNDAY, AUGUST 12:

Hate Not Welcome: No Unite The Right 2

This counterprotest is organized by Shut It Down D.C., a coalition of D.C. organizations including the D.C. Antifascist collective, Hoods4Justice, March for Racial Justice, and others. This is the same coalition that had their original counterprotest event deleted on Facebook because an alleged fake account was associated with it. Organizers say the event was legitimate, and have created a new page in its place.

More than 900 people have RSVP’d and almost 2,000 have expressed interest.

Here’s the full schedule, as laid out by the group:

12 p.m. -3 p.m.: Freedom Plaza, Still Here, Still Strong Rally— This rally will be a defiantly celebratory space, where we will center the identities of Black, Brown, indigenous, queer, Jewish, Muslim, disabled, workers, sex workers, and all other identities that white supremacy seeks to destroy. There will be a 3-hour program of speakers and musicians sharing their wisdom and experiences from the perspective of their intersecting identities. (This will be a permitted, safer space away from the white supremacist rally. Childcare, security and de-escalators will be present.)

3:30 p.m.: March to Lafayette Square, where the white supremacists will be protesting. (NOTE: There will be a clear division between the end of the rally and the start of the march. You should not come on the march if you do not want to be put in a potentially risky/confrontational situation, as we will be in the same space as the white supremacist rally)

4 p.m.-TBD: Continued rally in Lafayette Square (This is a higher risk space due to proximity with white supremacists, although we do still have a permit for the space)

Rise Up Fight Back Counter-Protest

This counterprotest is being run by Black Lives Matter D.C. and, according to their Facebook page, is being hosted alongside Shut It Down. The group is meeting at 12 p.m. at the intersection of 16th Street and I Street NW near Lafayette Park for the march and counterprotest.

You can sign up for updates from the organizers of this counterprotest here. If you want to donate in place of or in addition to attendance, you can do that here. The event page also says they will have de-escalators, legal observers, and a jail fund for anyone who gets arrested.

United to Love: Stand Together Against All Forms of Hate

The Baltimore-Washington Conference of The United Methodist Church says this rally “will stand as an alternative to the hatred, but it will also be much more as people of faith claim and share God’s love, peace and justice. We feel compelled to raise a prophetic voice challenging the climate of distrust, distortion of truth and fear, shifting the conversation to our common future.”

The event will start at 11 a.m. with worship followed by a rally fon the National Mall, between 3rd and 4th Streets SW, near the National Museum of the American Indian. The Conference is asking attendees to register through the website.

Rally and March Against the Fascists

Also partly in partnership with the larger Shut It Down coalition, the D.C. International Socialist Organization is hosting a rally at Freedom Plaza, and then a march to Lafayette Park. The rally will start at 12 p.m. and the march will begin at 3:30 p.m.

The REAL White People’s Rally

According to local tour guide and organizer Tim Krepp, more details about timing and location for this rally will be provided on Friday. Right now, it looks as if the group will be meeting at Lafayette Square from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

From the Facebook event page: “We’re going to take back ‘White Culture’. We’re going to show the world that while our culinary and musical traditions can seem odd, you have nothing to fear from Wonder Bread sandwiches and a plethora of tubas. That while we KNOW our history has done horrible things right next to the good ones, we’ve learned this lesson, acknowledge the pain, seek to remedy it, and move forward.”

Unity Against Hate – Rally in D.C. – #AgapeMarch

The Agape March is a march “for love and civil rights” that has been ongoing since August 3. Marchers started in New York city, and will arrive in D.C., their final destination, on August 12. They will hold a rally at the MLK monument from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Trans And Queer #ResistDance Against White Supremacy

The location of this protest is to be announced, but it will be held on August 12 from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. It’s being hosted by The Future is Feminist.

From the Facebook event page: “While nazis and white supremacists spread an ideology of racism and genocide, we are here to fiercely and unapologetically celebrate our communities and our existence – and of course drown them out with bumpin’ beats and lots of rainbow biodegradable confetti!”

Occupy Lafayette Park Aug. 12 Against Racism

This counterprotest, hosted by the ANSWER Coalition, will be held at Lafayette Park starting at 1 p.m.

From the group: “Emboldened by the anti-immigrant and white supremacist Trump White House, these fascist forces feel that they can expand their movement of hate and bigotry. They must be stopped. Stand against racism and fascism on Sunday, August 12!”

Create UNITY

If you’re looking for a way to protest but want to keep away from the fray, this may be the event you’re looking for. The UNITY program is an interactive art project happening Sunday from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at President Lincoln’s Cottage (Upshur Street NW at Rock Creek Church Road NW). Photos show participants helping weave together a large pink web, which will serve to “celebrate our interconnectedness,” according to the Facebook event page.
