Drink all the beers, turn yourself into a pickle, groove to some reggae, and more this weekend.
FRIDAY, AUGUST 17
GET SCHWIFTY: Find a way to distract your Jerrys for the night. After a delay, it’s opening weekend for Wubba Lubba Dub Pub, the Rick and Morty-themed pop-up bar. The team behind a slew of other pop-up bars you may have stood in line for is back, this time with dimension-hopping decorations and drinks that will have fans of the show belching in appreciation. Speaking of, if you’re committed enough to come in costume as drunk genius inventor Rick, you can use a special entrance. Mortys will be tolerated, if you insist. (1843 7th Street, NW, 5 p.m. – 1:30 a.m., FREE ADMISSION)
Update, 8/18: The PUB has shut down.
THAT’S AMORE: Loving Stephen Sondheim isn’t a choice. It’s a compulsion, a deep affection that bubbles up from your tippity-tapping toes. While you’ve got love on the brain and a song in your heart, you might find your way to Arlington, where Sondheim’s Tony Award-winning musical Passion opened earlier this week. The production stars the stunning Natascia Diaz as Fosca, who is not only lovesick but also legit sick. She falls for a hunky man in a uniform, which sparks a love triangle and a whole lot of harmonized drama. Directed by Signature’s associate artistic director Matthew Gardiner, the show is set in 1860s Italy and could make for a great date night, bello. (Signature Theatre, 8 p.m., $40-$79)
NICE MEAL FOR A STEAL: They say abs are made in the kitchen, but you know what else are? Dosas. Gazpacho. Burritos. Delicious, three-course meals. It’s August, meaning you can finally dispense with whatever “summer body” nonsense you bought into back in May and let yourself indulge this weekend, just in time for the tail end of Restaurant Week. More than 250 local restaurants are offering prix frixe menus as part of the gluttonous celebration of all things culinary. (Various Locations, Various Times, $22-$35)
SATURDAY, AUGUST 18
RISKY BUSINESS: And you thought you had some wild stories. RISK! is a live show and podcast where storytellers tell true tales so “out there,” they were pretty confident they’d never, you know, actually get out into the world. Whoops. Come hear stories told by everyday D.C. folks like yourself, in a show that’s hosted the likes of Sarah Silverman, Michael Ian Black, Dan Savage, Margaret Cho, and more. (The Black Cat, 9 p.m., $25)
AROUND THE WORLD IN 80 BITES: The Around the World Cultural Food Festival is back for the third time, bringing you live music, artisanal goods, and most importantly, food from across the globe. This isn’t going to be one of those festivals with two taco trucks, a curry vendor, and a random BBQ guy. There will be 22 food vendors, plus dessert options, and each restaurant represents a different cuisine. Sample Nigerian, Argentinian, Greek, Lebanese, and Colombian food, and more. (Freedom Plaza, 11 a.m.-7 p.m., FREE)
LOCAL MUSIC ROCKS: Support local music at the DC Music Rocks Festival. Black Dog Prowl, Allthebestkids, Fellowcraft, Pebble to Pearl, and Kid Brother will perform. Part of the proceeds will benefit music education initiative Girls Rock! DC, which teaches female, non-binary, and trans youth how to rock out through camps and after school programs. (9:30 Club, 7 p.m., $15)
ALL THE PIZZA: Pizzeria Paradiso’s Summer Fest is back, serving up beer and pies, for all you strong-livered gluttons. Sure, the ticket price might be a little steep. But if you can manage a minimum of two beers and a slice an hour, it’s not a bad deal. Keep in mind, these beers are not your average brews, and pizzas at Paradiso typically range $14-15, so you can get your money’s worth with the right attitude. (Pizzeria Paradiso Dupont Circle, 11:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m., $80)
SUNDAY, AUGUST 19
WE JAMMIN’: The first DC World Reggae Festival is adding a supremely chill layer to your weekend. The theme is ‘The Wise Men,’ which allegedly encapsulates love, unity, spiritual rejuvenation, and health awareness. The lineup features Shabba Ranks, Chronixx, Kes the Band, Toots and The Maytals, Rupee, Raging Fyah, Jah Works, and Ras Slick. Not too shabby for the first iteration. (RFK Stadium, noon-11 p.m., $69.99-$200)
CRAFT BEER: The 10th annual DC Beer Week begins this weekend. Presented by the DC Brewers’ Guild, the eight-day-long festival celebrates local craft beer. And isn’t that worth toasting to? On Sunday, check out Lager Fest, an inaugural event showcasing…you guessed it: lagers. Shocking, we know. There will be live music and unlimited pours, in your fancy schmancy tasting glass. (City Winery, 1 p.m.-5 p.m. $40)
HAIL TO THE CHIEF: Imagine the President of the United States was an imposter, unfit for office, but convincingly looked the part. Dave pretty much hinges on that premise. A presidential lookalike finds his way into the Oval Office when the real president gets sick, and not under the most respectable circumstances. The world premiere of this very D.C. musical closes on Sunday. Read our review, and maybe check it out. (Arena Stage, 2 & 7:30 p.m. $75-176)
