Moxy, Marriott Hotels’ “new millennial-focused boutique hotel concept,” is coming to downtown D.C., and it promises attributes like “selfie elevators,” a check-in desk at the bar with a free drink, and “spirited Moxy Crew Members that have high energy and a fearless do-it-yourself attitude.”
But where does a hotel find these employees? Not through a regular job posting, surely. Those are for squares and—even worse—Gen Xers. So Moxy is hiring its bartenders, baristas, servers, housekeepers, and front desk staff during an event on September 27 that it’s calling a “Casting Call.”
“This isn’t your mom’s job interview so don’t even think about bringing a resumé,” says the Facebook event, first flagged by WTOP. “We’re looking for crew members who have great style, are quick on their feet, and know what’s happening in the city. So really just be ready to show us who you are and have some fun!”
Felicia Schneider, the HR coordinator responsible for planning the recruiting event, says it’s “basically like a big party that gives us an opportunity to get to know applicants” and vice versa. There will be a DJ, food, and some activities. She says they’re expecting around 70-80 people. The hiring process will, down the road, include job interviews.
The D.C. branch is slated to open its communal spaces, like its bar and lobby, in October 2018, with the rooms becoming available at the start of 2019. Its location, on K St NW between 10th and 11th streets, is a mere two-minute walk from Eaton D.C., a newly opened hotel that also has the millennial market in its crosshairs.
The first Moxy opened in Milan in 2014, and the brand has since opened outposts throughout Europe, Asia, and the United States. Rates for the D.C. location appear to start at $129 for a guest room with one queen bed during the weekend in January, with weekday rates at $229 for the same space.
In marketing materials, Moxy has been calling its customer-facing staff the “up-for-it crew.” The hotel encourages potential applicants to “Have fun like it’s your job—because it actually is!”
When we first called the number listed for the Moxy, this is what the automated voice message said: “Hey you. I’m happy you called the Moxy Washington D.C. Downtown, scheduled to start hooking you up in late October 2018. If you have a group of peeps looking to crash with us, the fun begins January of 2019. So drop your digits, and we’ll hit you back with the scoop.”
