Heritage India's Future Not Looking Good

Heritage India's Future Not Looking Good

Yesterday, we discussed how D.C. Police Chief Cathy Lanier has sparingly used her emergency powers to shut down bars and restaurants after violent incidents. Now it looks like Heritage India, the site of a fight which led to a shooting that left one man dead last weekend, is faced with much more than having its doors shuttered for 96 hours. more ›

Good morning, Washington. Hope you're enjoying your long weekend. For me, this will be the last time I wish you good morning, as I'm stepping down as weekend editor. You DCist commenters made it a good time, but as other things in life take priority (work is busy! hey, I'm getting hitched!) I've decided to stop doing this gig. You can always read me on my own blog, and you will be in capable hands with the new team. Now let's get to the news. more ›

Jimmy Valentine's Remains Open, Has Reapplied For License Renewal

Last weekend, we noted a protest which had been lodged against the liquor license renewal for Bladensburg Road NE bar Jimmy Valentine's Lonely Hearts Club. Despite that protest, a spokesperson for the club informs DCist that things are operating as usual at the club, and there are no plans for the bar to stop serving its customers anytime soon. more ›

ABRA Dismisses Liquor License Renewal for Jimmy Valentine's

ABRA Dismisses Liquor License Renewal for Jimmy Valentine's

Being lonely is going to be a bit harder, now that we'll have to be sober at the same time. The MPD-5D listserve lit up this weekend with news that the D.C. Alcoholic Beverage Regulation Administration had denied the liquor license renewal for Jimmy Valentine's Lonely Hearts Club at a protest hearing last Wednesday. Currently the bar holds a tavern license and was arguably one of the first to populate the H Street corridor (even though it's located on Bladensburg Road NE). more ›

DC9 Able To Reopen On December 15

DC9 Able To Reopen On December 15

Based on reports from a hearing held this afternoon, DC9 -- thanks in part to a large security upgrade -- has been deemed to have resolved a "threat of imminent danger," clearing the way for the club to reopen. DC9 will be permitted to reopen as early as December 15 provided it meets certain conditions, such as providing employees with security training and ensuring DC9 co-owner Joe Englert doesn't employ the five men initially charged in the death of Ali Ahmed Mohammed at any of his D.C. establishments until at least January 19. more ›

Rock and Roll Hotel Email Typo Calls DC9 Incident "A Traffic Death"

UPDATE: It appears that the club intended to call the incident a "tragic" death, according to a version of the email newsletter which was sent out after the version we received. We just got in touch with Steve Lambert, the booking manager at the Hotel, who confirmed the typo and told us that he couldn't believe that he made the error. "Everything about this situation is so sensitive," Lambert said. "This was something I knew I had to spell check and read a few times before I sent it." more ›

ABRA Unanimously Denies Motion To Reopen DC9

During a hearing this morning, the D.C. Alcoholic Beverage Control Board unanimously denied a motion for reconsideration to reopen DC9. The board appears to have had concerns about reopening the club while the results of the medical examiner's report were still pending. Certainly a frustrating day for supporters of the club -- another ABRA hearing, scheduled for December 1, will reportedly revisit the motion. Five employees of the club had been arrested for allegedly beating Ali Ahmed Mohammed to death after an altercation on October 15, but those charges were dropped, perhaps temporarily, on November 5. more ›

End of Daylight Savings: Just Means More Time To Spend At The Bar

End of Daylight Savings: Just Means More Time To Spend At The Bar

The Alcoholic Beverage Regulation Administration recently released its 2011 schedule of holiday hour extensions for establishments in the District of Columbia (see below for the PDF). It's pretty standard stuff. The law which passed in 2009 allowing bars and restaurants to serve alcoholic beverages for an extra hour on the days before all D.C. and federal holidays is still in place, so you'll still be able to drink longer in celebration of Emancipation Day or Washington's Birthday. more ›

D.C. Bars May Stay Open 1 Hour Later on Thursday

D.C. Bars May Stay Open 1 Hour Later on Thursday

As ABRA tweeted earlier today, a law that went into effect last year allows D.C. bars and restaurants to, if they so choose, stay open for an additional hour of alcoholic beverage service the night before any D.C. or federal holiday. And since Friday is Emancipation Day, and D.C. government and schools will be closed, that means Thursday night could see a number of bars taking advantage and staying open until 3 a.m., as if it were a regular weekend night. more ›

Contact your favorite romantic watering hole to see whether they will give you a few extra hours to make a bad decision. more ›

Woman Injured in Hit-and-Run on U Street

A woman was injured in a hit-and-run collision on U Street in the early hours of Sunday morning, officials said Monday. The incident took place at about 3:30 a.m. Sunday near the corner of 14th and U streets NW. D.C. police are looking for the driver of a four-door, silver 2005 Toyota Camry with unknown tags. The woman is said to be in stable condition after sustaining a leg injury. City officials confirmed that she works as an investigator for the District's Alcoholic Beverage Regulation Administration, and was on-duty at the time of the collision. Police are investigating, and ask anyone with information to call 202-727-9099. more ›

Bobby Lew's and Bossa Have Liquor Licenses Revoked

Bobby Lew's and Bossa Have Liquor Licenses Revoked

The Going Out Gurus are reporting that two Adams Morgan bars, Bossa Bistro & Lounge and Bobby Lew's Saloon, have had their liquor licenses revoked by the D.C. Alcohol Control Board for low food sales. Both bars had restaurant-class licenses, which require 45 percent of gross receipts to be derived from food sales. Neither establishment has ever been in trouble regarding their liquor licenses before, but it's unclear what will happen now, as the board seems bent on sticking to the letter of the law and making an example out of the two. more ›
