A Walkable Wisconsin Avenue?

D.C. Officer Keeps it Real, Throws Down in Adams Morgan Fight

How can anyone expect that they can cause a raucous or start a fight in a public space and not be caught on tape. Police officers aren't exempt from this rule either. Another YouTube video, uploaded over the holiday weekend, shows an unidentified man and a uniformed D.C. police officer taunting each other until the incident escalates into a fight. more ›

At The Potter's House, Brunch Is Great, Brunch Is Good

I never paid The Potter's House much mind as a place to dine until I noticed a banner outside and some leaflets left around the neighborhood advertising a new Saturday brunch buffet. All you can eat from a modest selection breakfast items and other savories for $12.95, and featuring a rotating international selection each week. more ›

Men Give Cyclist Concussion For Trying To Report Accident

Men Give Cyclist Concussion For Trying To Report Accident

It's, sadly, a far too common scenario in the District: a cyclist is riding home late at night through a busy intersection, when a car attempts a quick turn and hits them. Usually, though, the driver and cyclist don't proceed to get into a physical altercation which ends with another biker on the bad end of a concussion. more ›

Jack Rose Aiming for June 1 Opening

GOG's Fritz Hahn tweeted this afternoon that new 18th Street watering hole Jack Rose "passed all inspections, getting liquor license today. Staff training starts ASAP, opening by 6/1 is 'definite.'" We got in touch with owner Bill Thomas, who confirmed that the Adams Morgan bar, located at 2007 18th Street NW, would definitely be open by June 1 -- with the little teaser of "or sooner." more ›

Early Look: Jack Rose

             + 1 more

Jack Rose in Adams Morgan has been a long time coming. And it won't be long before we can enjoy the delicious collection of pre-Prohibition liquors, the food of Chef Michael Hartzer, the tasty cocktails of Rachel Sergi, and the strong beer program being developed by Brian Kruglak. Think of it as a fancier take on Owner Bill Thomas's Bourbon, but with a focus on scotch. Though no official opening date has been set, a recent visit to the construction site shows that it shouldn't be too long before they're open for business. more ›

Communication Eases Adams Morgan Streetscape Stress

             + 1 more

Last September, the District Department of Transportation announced that it would undertake a large-scale redesign of the streetscape of a half-mile stretch of 18th Street between Florida Avenue and Columbia Road in Adams Morgan, including the elimination of diagonal on-street parking and the installation of improved crosswalks, more trees and sidewalk bulbouts at key intersections. But while the end product of the work will be a boon for pedestrians, many wondered whether business along the corridor would suffer, as some retailers had during similar projects along P Street NW and H Street NE. So, is that the case? more ›

Yes, Someone Was So Upset About Adams Mill Bar & Grill Closing, They Made A Downfall Parody About It

Yes, Someone Was So Upset About Adams Mill Bar & Grill Closing, They Made A Downfall Parody About It

Wait, are we still doing Downfall parodies? It all seems a little too 2009 for my tastes, but, obviously, I can't begrudge anyone for creatively venting when their favorite bar closes its doors suddenly. [The subtitles in the video are NSFW, so tilt those monitors.] more ›

Adams Mill Space: No Cosi, No Panera...What Next?

Adams Mill Space: No Cosi, No Panera...What Next?

The Adams Mill Bar & Grill is officially no more. So what will be taking over the desirable retail space near the intersection of 18th Street and Columbia Road NW? Rumors had been flying around that the space would be filled by one of two national bread-bowl chains Cosi or Panera Bread -- but TBD's Elahe Izadi reports this afternoon that neither have any plans to move into the neighborhood: Panera is apparently heading to DCUSA in Columbia Heights (news in and of itself, of course), while Cosi is "actively looking for sites in the [D]istrict," but not in the Adams Mill space. It appears as if we're back to square one -- so we thought we'd ask: what would you like to see take over the plot? Let us know in the comments. more ›

Two Stabbings in the District Last Night

There were two separate stabbings in the District last night. The first stabbing involved two brothers: a man was fatally stabbed by his brother in Adams Morgan last night. The stabbing occurred on the 2200 block of Champlain Street near Kalorama Road. The suspect is at large. The news of the second stabbing is hazy so far, with news coming from only the dcfireems Twitter stream. The D.C. Fire and EMS Twitter feed reported that two victims were stabbed in the 900 block of 14th Street NW. The victims were in serious condition, but no other details have come since the initial tweets at about 4 a.m. this morning. UPDATE (12:00 p.m.): MPD announced that an arrest has been made in the Adams Morgan stabbing incident. more ›

Water Main Break Closes Adams Morgan Roads

TBD reports that there was an 8 inch water main break in the 2400 block of Ontario Road NW. DC Water estimates the repair will take 6 to 8 hours. Ontario, along with Euclid Street and Kalorama Road (though it doesn't say which blocks of Euclid and Kalorama) are also closed to traffic. However, this writer was just in the area to shop at Harris Teeter and I didn't notice any problems, on Kalorama or Euclid. The 1600 blocks of Euclid and Kalorama are both open. more ›

Alex Ovechkin Filming Near Adams Morgan Harris Teeter?

Alex Ovechkin Filming Near Adams Morgan Harris Teeter?

Walking to my neighborhood grocery store yesterday, it was hard to miss all of the film equipment and crew near the Harris Teeter on Kalorama Road. I made some inquiries and did some Internet searching, but no one knew what was filming. Well, leave it to Prince of Petworth to find out the scoop: seems like Capitals player Alex Ovechkin is filming in in the area. He speculates it could be for a Capital One commercial, as he's done commercials for them before. Any Ovechkin spottings in Adams Morgan? more ›

National Zoo Director Apologizes For Rocking Too Hard

National Zoo Director Apologizes For Rocking Too Hard

On October 29, the National Zoo put on Night of the Living Zoo, an evening of rock and roll combined with some harmless Halloween revelry. It sounds like it a rollicking good time -- there were palm readers, fire eaters and illusionists, and DCist was on hand to check out the set performed by Grace Potter & The Nocturnals (which we rather enjoyed). But some of the Zoo's neighbors weren't too thrilled about the noise being made at the show, so they took their gripes to the most captive audience they knew of. To the listserv! more ›

Lanier on Her Future As Chief: "What Happens, Happens"

Metropolitan Police Chief Cathy Lanier spent some time chatting with Bruce DePuyt on NewsTalk this morning, and while there was discussion regarding yesterday's U Street shooting and several other hot topics, a good chunk of the conversation centered around Lanier's future under a Vince Gray administration. Lanier took a rather detached stance on the issue. more ›

Amsterdam Falafelshop To Franchise

It's true -- we love Amsterdam Falafelshop. One of the city's more optimal quick/drunk/comfort foods, the Falafelshop a must-stop for any adventure into the dark wilderness that is 18th Street NW on a weekend night. But it looks like we're going to need to learn how to share our pita-stuffed goodness with a lot more people: the restaurant's ownership announced this morning that they are actively looking to franchise. more ›
