Package at Judiciary Square Deemed Safe

A DCist reader has told us that a bomb threat has been reported near the Judiciary Square Metro station. The D.C. government office building located at 441 4th Street NW is closed to incoming and outgoing traffic, and WMATA is reporting that the 4th Street/Courthouse Metro entrance is likewise closed. We'll report on details as they emerge; please leave your own updates in the comments. more ›

Borf Supporters Start Blogging

Fire at Chloe (Updated)

We're hearing from several sources that parts of 18th Street in Adams Morgan were shut down yesterday while fire crews responded to an emergency at Chloe, a restaurant and lounge located near the intersection with Adams Mill Road. The establishment, which is owned along with nearby Saki by Alireza “Haji” Hajaligholi, has apparently sustained significant damage on its first and second floors. DCist will provide updates as new information arises. more ›

Club Red Closing?

Club Red Closing?

Is the ultra-hip, quasi exclusive and not very well marked dance club Red closing its doors for good? It seems that way. A DCist reader tipped us off to the fact that, after nine years, this is the last weekend for the late-night club. According to this flyer, hipsters with an itch to get down have one more chance to dance late into the night this weekend. Located just below the yellow Fudruckers sign at... more ›

On Friday, DCist readers engaged in some relatively civil back and forth over the much publicized America Supports You Freedom Walk, an event organized by the Department of Defense to honor the service of the country's countless men and women in uniform and to memorialize the death of those who lost their lives four years ago at the Pentagon. Taking place today, thousands of people, pictured above, gathered at the Pentagon and followed a... more ›

More Capitol Lounge Photos

As we reported earlier today the Pennsylvania Avenue bar Capitol Lounge suffered a severe fire late last night. The news caused a flurry of emails as members of the Capitol Hill community swapped photos and the news. A DCist reader and self-admitted frequent visitor to the bar has sent us dozens of exclusive photos taken earlier today, including a number of the fire damage to the bar's decorations. The images above are details from two: one photo of a Marion Barry campaign poster which our tipster noted seems to be unscathed, and another of a Reagan - Bush campaign sign melted by the extreme heat. Our source says that according to information he received from employees there's no evidence it was anything except an accident - probably caused by a cigarette. more ›

Breaking News: Capitol Lounge Burns Down

Breaking News: Capitol Lounge Burns Down

DCist is hearing unsubstantiated reports Capitol Hill institution the Capitol Lounge suffered from a serious fire last night. We are currently attempting to get a hold of the D.C. Fire Department for confirmation, and will alert DCist readers with the full story when it becomes available. If readers have further information, please leave them in the comments. UPDATE: Thanks to the commenters, who note that NBC4 is confirming the fire. The station reports that the... more ›

Judy Came from Ohio, She's a Scientologist

Judy Came from Ohio, She's a Scientologist

Thanks to DCeiver, who points out some Scientologist wackiness that doesn't involve Tom Cruise. It seems those crazy Dianetics believers are at it again, this time causing a ruckus at a local print shop. The issue? Apparently, they thought the staff was holding on to fliers for a special event. Copies of the flier had apparently been leaked to the public, and the angry Scientologists -- clearly unable to control MEST -- sent a lawyer and some investigators to search the entire store. Their actions then got weirder -- but we'll let the witness do the talking:

Then they said they wanted to buy some reams of colored paper. We said fine. They said they wanted to pick which reams they got. Odd but fine. They must have bought 100 reams of paper. They opened them up and looked at the pages. It seems they thought we were hiding documents in there. They left all of the paper in a big pile. We recycled it.
Hmm. We wonder what was on that all important flier. Our suspicion: the short list of candidates to be Tom Cruise's girlfriend. Next time, guys, please take your business to PopCopy. more ›

Morning Roundup: D.C. Out of the Loop Edition

Today will be mostly cloudy with some isolated thunderstorms in the afternoon, with highs in the 70s. A DCist reader uploaded an image of this pig, and even did a little sleuthing to uncover its purpose. Have you seen a pig? Injured Traffic Officer Dies: Popular traffic office Joseph Pozell, who was recognized at a vigil Sunday, has died at George Washington Hospital, the Post reports. D.C. Government Wants to Know: D.C. Mayor Anthony A.... more ›

Did you get caught in the downpours this weekend? Here's a shot of a bolt of lightning taken from Matthew Bradley's Flickr photostream via DCist Photos. Fire Alarm Silent at the Dorchester

Fire Alarm Silent at the Dorchester

Residents of Dorchester House apartment building on 16th Street in Adams Morgan are upset after a fire last Wednesday. Nobody was seriously hurt and the D.C. Fire Department responded quickly and extinguished the blaze, but the building's alarm apparently never went off. In a message posted to the neighborhood listserv, a resident reports A friend pulled the fire alarm in my hallway, but NO SOUND CAME OUT WHATSOEVER. In response to this shocking development, we... more ›

Not Your Typical Sunday Drivers

Not Your Typical Sunday Drivers

A DCist operative in Northern Virginia snapped this photo of drivers at their wit's end taking action to bypass backed-up traffic headed north on Interstate 95 between Occoquan and Lorton. Apparently, with no entry to the D.C.-bound HOV express lanes in sight, Sunday drivers decided to conquer the median to cross into the HOV lanes. (For those HOV purists, please note that on the weekends, the HOV lanes are normally always open to single-occupant cars. Here's some official HOV info from the commonwealth's Department of Transportation, which would probably frown on such extreme driver actions.) more ›

More Virginia License Plates

More Virginia License Plates

A DCist operative in Arlington, who has sent us photos of Virginia vanity plates in the past, has sent us yet another one with his cameraphone. Perhaps with all the traffic expected to be flooding the Tysons Corner area in the coming years, Tivo will be an absolute necessity to survive exurban living. If you can't escape your home because of clogged roads, you might as well not escape your Tivo. Embrace it, love it, submit! more ›

The Twins, at Chief Ike's?

The Twins, at Chief Ike's?

What do the Bush twins and George Stephanopolis have in common? A man named Chief Ike. A DCist source tells us he ran into the Bush twins in Adams Morgan last weekend. Which makes DCist ask, whaa, Adams Morgan? It seems that Jenna and Barbara may be straying from their normal stomping grounds on Wisconsin Avenue (Smith Point, and to a lesser extent, Bourbon), or may be growing more comfortable patronizing establishements east of Rock Creek ever since the duo got the staff and management at Stetson's into a whole host of trouble back in their underage drinking days. more ›

WMATA Woes, Continued ...

Coming Home: More on Kerri Strug

In the midst of the post-Thanksgiving rush at National Airport last night, two American Airlines flights from Miami and Chicago were sharing the same baggage carousel and a tiny former Olympic gymnast stood waiting for her bag. A DCist reader tells us that the petite Kerri Strug, who won America's heart at the 1996 Atlanta Olympic games, was wearing grey pants chatting on her cellphone. more ›

Visions Out, Reagan In?

Although DCist isn't necessarily surprised that Visions Cinema Bistro has been at risk of going out of business (with Landmark opening its E Street multiplex), but we are surprised about a possible replacement tenant. New Potbelly's To Open in Dupont

A DCist correspondant recently a spotted a sign hanging at 1635 Connecticut Ave, the future location of D.C.'s sixth Potbelly Sandwich Works restaurant. (The seventh is also in the works - at 1660 L Street) The sign read "If we were a chain, we'd be open already." Unfortunately, as far as DCist is concerned, they are a chain, with over 50 locations in six states - including the District, Minnesota, Texas, Michigan, and Illinois. more ›
