All Appeals On Deck

WTOP has the latest in the kerfuffle between the D.C. Police Department and the Fraternal Order of Police: Chief Cathy Lanier confirms that MPD has filed an appeal in an attempt to overturn a September 9th arbiter's ruling that the "All Hands On Deck" program violates the police union's contract with the city. (The FOP claims, among other issues, that overtime pay as a result of AHOD efforts was never paid to deserving officers.) As a result of the appeal, the police department will continue with plans to hold AHOD efforts in November and December. Depending on which agency's statistics one chooses to believe, it's been a pretty good year for Lanier and the police -- a large labor dispute is probably not the note the Chief envisioned ending the calendar year on.

It's hard to get too interested in the MPD's "no one really knows what good this does" All Hands on Deck weekends anymore, but just in case you start to wonder why there appear to be more cops around today and Saturday, be aware that the latest AHOD actually started early this morning. It'll last through to 6 a.m. on Sunday, June 7. Part of this weekend's effort will include four MPD-sponsored community clean-ups on Saturday: at Florida Avenue Park (1st and Florida Avenue NW); in the 4300-4400 blocks of Livingston Place SE; at Parkview Community Center (693 Otis Place NW); and Benning Stoddert Community Center (100 Stoddert Place SE). The clean-ups will be taking place Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and the second two events, happening at community centers, will also offer services such as job training and referrals, information about permanent supportive housing, substance abuse treatment and managing diabetes.

It'd be a fool's game to try and guess whether this weekend's increased police presence played any part in it, but still -- MPD Chief Cathy Lanier can't be too thrilled about this afternoon's fatal shooting in Northwest which bookended this weekend's "All Hands On Deck" effort. WTOP reports that a unnamed person with a gun entered a home at 67 Bryant Street NW and opened fire, killing one woman and striking three other adults. The three struck adults did not suffer life-threatening injuries. We're also hearing word that shots may have been fired in Columbia Heights this afternoon near 14th and Harvard Streets NW. Considering today's incidents, last night's shooting at 14th and W Streets NW, and the debate revolving around the effectiveness of "All Hands On Deck," Chief Lanier has to be preparing for a long day tomorrow.

All Hands on Deck Returns This Weekend

It's been a while, but the Metropolitan Police Department's "All Hands on Deck" initiative is back this weekend. In fact, it started already. From 6 a.m. this morning to 6 a.m. Sunday, every available city police officer will be on patrol. This weekend's initiative is well timed with protests planned for IMF and World Bank meetings, as well as the first really hot weekend we've had all year.

Two interesting stories today on the current state of the Metropolitan Police Department. The Washington Times reports that MPD Chief Cathy Lanier says she's going to stick with her All Hands on Deck policing strategy, which periodically puts every officer on duty over the course of a weekend. There were five All Hands on Deck weekends in 2007, and Lanier said she would continue them until the department can hire more officers.
