It's become chic to take the transit map of one's home metropolis and anagram the station names. Boing Boing has a remarkable collection of maps that have received the treatment, and when we learned of the craze, we wanted to jump on the bandwagon and give D.C. its own personal mixup. Just in time did we learn that the job had already been done. We like the results, although we are disappointed in the failure to dub the Woodley Park station "Do Gawk, My Rare Panda Looms" (thank you, Chris Snyder).

FRIDAY: The snow isn't supposed to hit until Saturday, but Fox has the perfect excuse to stay in tonight and avoid the hordes descending on Safeway for bread, milk, and toilet paper. What to do on New Year's Eve can be a yearly dilemma—one that rarely presents an easy answer. Restaurants book up early and often forgo their usual fare for a more creative prix fixe option. Bars and clubs are expensive, crowded, and can be difficult to get into. The big parties are also expensive, and feature notoriously long lines for the bar. So, what about taking a break from all the craziness and checking out one of the First Night celebrations going on around town? Admission is usually low cost or free and activities include bands, dancing, entertainment, fireworks, laser light shows, and more. Plus, since these events are billed as family friendly, they usually limit or do not allow alcohol, which means that you won't be starting off the new year with a monster hangover.

The first Northern Virginia branch opened out by Dulles Airport in February, and the retail giant is set to open a second branch in Fairfax in early 2005. Connoisseurs of fresh produce, gourmet prepared foods, and fine wines have flocked to the Sterling branch since its grand opening....

(From DCist contributor Amadie Hart) Clarendon, a historic shopping hub in Arlington County that was devastated by the construction associated with the construction of Metro's Orange Line in the 1970s, has undergone a wholesale transformation in the last decade. Small storefront retail and ethnic restaurants have been giving way to larger, chain developments. In recent years, stores such as Crate and Barrel, The Pottery Barn, the Container Store, and Williams Sonoma, and restaurants such as the Cheesecake Factory and Baja Fresh are attracting larger crowds of shoppers and diners. However, a couple of new openings in Clarendon are continuing the retail and restaurant explosion in Arlington's Orange Line corridor with a decidedly more "local" flavor.
