Good morning, Washington. It’s going to be a mild, albeit cloudy end to the holiday weekend. Enjoy the gentle weather while it lasts -- Tuesday will usher in rain and once it departs temperatures will drop a good 10 degrees, reminding us that winter is just a few short weeks away.

Uniontown Voicemail: "You Can Come Here, Pick Up A Kilo"
Well, we weren't entirely sure how the story about Natasha Dasher -- the proprietor of Uniontown Bar and Grill in Anacostia who was busted by federal agents on cocaine distribution charges over the weekend -- was going to get any worse. But WTOP's Mark Segraves appears to have uncovered a nasty piece of fallout.
Owner of Anacostia Restaurant Charged in Federal Drug-Trafficking Case
The owner of Anacostia’s popular Uniontown Bar and Grill has been charged in a federal drug-trafficking investigation. Federal drug agents tracked 65 kilograms (around 140 pounds) of cocaine from Texas to the woman's office in Fort Washington.

The Great Anacostia River Enigma: It's Probably Just Silt
Has the mystery been solved? Officials from the District's Department of the Environment and D.C. Fire and EMS seem confident that they know the substance which is making the Anacostia River shine.
The Sunday Morning Post
Good morning, Washington. Grab the galoshes. The D.C. region, which has been suffering from moderate drought, is locked in for more rain today. Heavy downpours are expected, and the National Weather Service has issued a Flash Flood Watch for most of the metro region. Maryland's tax-free week starts today, so if you don't find the rain too dissuasive be careful on the roads.
East of the River Circulator Route Revealed
After a series of public meetings over the past two months, the District Department of Transportation has finally revealed the routing of the first Circulator bus which will travel across the Anacostia River.

Guardian Angel Attacked By Teens On Metro
A Guardian Angel-in-training was assaulted over the weekend inside the Anacostia Metro station after he intervened in a scuffle between a group and a pair of women.
Committee of 100: Love The Streetcars, Hate The Wires
When it comes to the District's streetcars, the Committee of 100 on the Federal City is diametrically opposed to overhead wires. It's just become kind of common knowledge among those who follow transit news in the region, kind of like how every Redskins fan knows that Dan Snyder will recklessly spend a lot of money on old free agents or everyone in town knows to stock up on bread before snow hits the area. But, in fairness to the C100, they don't actually hate the idea of installing streetcars -- far from it. At least that's the takeaway from a 91-page report released by the Commission earlier this week.
Considering Capicostia
Washington is no stranger to unique, strange and/or experimental neighborhood names: Swampoodle, Burleith, Foggy Bottom, Stronghold and Civic Betterment have always tickled my fancy for one reason or another. Point being: it's hardly surprising when somebody comes along with a suggestion to carve out a new neighborhood from one or several larger hoods and then brands it with a silly-sounding name.
TV Shows: Perpetuating D.C. Stereotypes as Always
D.C. portrayed inaccurately? In a Hollywood production? Yeah, it's not the first time. I'm sure it won't be the last. But it's still worth pointing out when it happens: And Now, Anacostia's (and now ANC 6D07 representative) David Garber bemoans Anacostia's poor treatment in the Fox TV show Bones.
D.C. Rolls Out New Anacostia River-Themed License Plate
Today, the District adds one more license plate to its short list of vehicle tags promoting certain organizations or causes. (My personal favorite? The National Association of Black Scuba Divers.)
Reports of Anacostia Streetcar's Death Have Been Greatly Exaggerated
We got a couple of breathless tips today regarding this report by WUSA9, quite broadly titled "DC's Streetcar Project Halted For Now," in which the Anacostia streetcar line was said to be heading "into mothballs." Well, that's news to us! The story made a big deal about a temporary halt in construction on the two-year old project, making sure to mention the "unfinished rails jutted into weeds."
Late Morning Coffee Break: 'Good Hope: Anacostia'
Chris Keener, in association with the D.C. Commission on Arts and Humanities and five teenagers participating in the Summer Youth Employment Program, produced the above short film -- a wonderfully optimistic piece about one of the most historic neighborhoods in the District, Anacostia. We enjoyed it immensely, and figured you might too.
DDOT Ponders New Anacostia Circulator
The District Department of Transportation is considering creating a brand new Circulator line that would travel between Barracks Row and the Anacostia and Congress Heights Metro stations, Jonathan O'Connell reports in the Washington Business Journal.
Grand Opening at Big Chair Coffee n' Grill
Today's grand opening at Big Chair Coffee n' Grill might be the most highly anticipated new business event in River East in years. Dozens of curious customers dropped by the soft opening on Saturday to check the place out. There wasn't a whole lot to see yet: No sign, no food. But before Big Chair even opened its doors, it was already building a scene.
Robbers Crash D.C. Blogger's Party
David Garber, the writer of D.C. blog And Now, Anacostia, posted this weekend about his Friday night Christmas party. Everything was going smoothly until four men wearing ski masks and carrying guns burst in and demanded "Give us everything!"
Anacostia Streetcar Track Work Causing New Traffic Pattern
Just as work to lay down tracks for the H Street NE streetcar line disrupted traffic in August, the District of Columbia Department of Transportation is warning drivers that the ongoing installation of streetcar tracks for the Anacostia Line will change traffic patterns at the intersection of South Capitol Street and Firth Sterling Avenue for the next couple of weeks.
DDOT Schedules Public Meetings on Streetcars
The District Department of Transportation is bringing its show on the road in the coming month in an effort to do public outreach in all eight wards on the biggest projects in its pipeline, including those streetcars you've been hearing so much about. You may have seen different versions of this list of upcoming public meetings, but below is the revised, and most up-to-date, calendar now available.
Streetcar Updates
District Department of Transportation director Gabe Klein is set to meet with the public tonight to provide an update on the epically delayed plans for a streetcar line along H Street NE. The project is the second of two stalled streetcar plans, the other along South Capitol Street in Anacostia. In advance of tonight's big meeting, which is being co-hosted by Advisory Neighborhood Commissions 5B, 6A and 6C, the Washington Business Journal's Jonathon O'Connell provides a preview.
Double Shooting in Southeast
One man is dead and another injured in a double shooting that happened in Southeast D.C. at around 2 a.m. this morning, WUSA9 reports. The shooting took place in the 1200 block of Eaton Road SE, only a few blocks from the Anacostia Metro station, near the Barry Farm neighborhood. The deceased man, still unidentified, was already dead when officers arrived on scene, and the second man was taken to a hospital in stable condition. No motive or suspect so far.
Happy Birthday, Frederick Douglass!
It's a big week of historical birthdays around the nation, but we'd be remiss if we failed to wish one of the D.C. area's more legendary figures a happy 191st. That said, we're blowing out candles today for Frederick Douglass, "the Lion of Anacostia." Abolitionist, ambassador, author, and an all-around American patriot, Douglass is believed to have been born on this date in 1818 in nearby Talbot County, Maryland -- though he became synonymous with the District after moving to the city in 1872, the same year in which he became the first African-American to run for the office of Vice President. The most visible local shrine to Douglass is likely his home in Cedar Hill, where he moved in 1877 and which is now known as the Frederick Douglass National Historic Site.
Anacostia Wins HGTV Contest
Remember the HGTV Change the World, Start at Home contest we told you about last month? Anacostia was one of ten needy neighborhoods in the United States identified by the cable channel that was eligible to win a "neighborhood revitalization" package if it received enough votes online -- and Anacostia has won!
