Anti-Gay Assault Reported in Georgetown

A Georgetown student says she was attacked on Tuesday night because she was wearing a gay rights T-shirt, WJLA is reporting.

Police say it happened Tuesday night near the school’s entrance on Canal Road. The female student says two men started insulting her with derogatory comments based on her perceived sexual orientation. Then, officers say, the men took her book bag, pushed her to the ground, and then struck her with the bag.

FOX 5's Paul Wagner reports on the existence of a 5-minute YouTube video that police have been using to make arrests after a big fight between two groups of girls at the Paradise at Parkside Apartments in Northeast. The original video has since been removed from YouTube, but FOX 5 shot its own video of the original off of a computer screen, which we've re-posted below. This version has no audio, but you can clearly see several young women who are variously armed with knives, sticks and rocks, and at least one woman appears to have a belt in her hand. Nothing really happens except a large group of girls shouting at and chasing each other through the apartment complex's common areas, until the 4 1/2 minute mark, when a fight finally breaks out, and then a woman attempts to use her car to run down several people involved. At least one person, a young man, appears to be injured at the very end.

WJLA covers an assault and robbery committed by a group of teenage girls at the Rue 14 Boutique (1803 14th Street NW) a few weeks ago, noting that a similar crime happened at another business nearby earlier this week. They've got surveillance video of five young suspects who participated in a grab and run at Rue 14, with one of them staying behind to rough up the store owner while the others got away. Upsetting stuff.

Why Did a Metrobus Driver Punch McGruff the Crime Dog?

The Examiner's Scott McCabe provides the details in today's strangest crime story. D.C. police officer Tyrone Hardy was dressed up as the iconic McGruff the Crime Dog on Saturday afternoon, interacting with a group of children at the corner of 14th Street and Spring Road NW, when a Metrobus driver allegedly stopped his bus, got out of the vehicle, walked over to McGruff and punched the mascot in the face. No kidding.

McGruff staggered, children screamed and the crime dog’s attacker jumped back into the bus and drove off, police said. A call of an assault on a police officer went out over the police radio while passengers on the bus yelled at Brim.
The bus driver, 38-year-old Shawn Brim, later said that he was trying "to be funny." Funny or not, Brim has been charged with simple assault, and Metro, who has employed him since 2003, has placed him under administrative review.

The Metropolitan Police Department sent out an update early this morning on Tuesday's officer-involved shooting at 16th and Kalorama Road NW. The officer in question was an off-duty detective. Police say he was attacked randomly by an apparently mentally disturbed man. The suspect, who was shot once in the abdomen and is in stable condition in a local hospital, has still not been identified. Police are also withholding the name of the detective, but say he is a 20-year veteran assigned to the Narcotics and Special Investigations Division. He was treated for non-life-threatening injuries at a local hospital and released, and has been placed on administrative leave with pay pending an investigation. The suspect has been charged with aggravated assault. The shooting is being investigated by the department’s Force Investigations Team.

One of the victims, a 37-year-old from Clinton, is on life support; the other, a 23-year-old from Fort Washington, was treated at a hospital for a bruised jaw and then released. The victims' names have not been released and this incident may be considered a hate crime.

The Associated Press has a shameful story this morning accusing the National Zoo's beloved panda cub, Tai Shan (aka Butterstick), of injuring a zookeeper. Pandas don't do anything wrong, AP! They are only adorable and cuddly and lovable and that's all. Didn't you get the memo?
