Nats Look to Arrest Orioles During First Beltway Battle

After 22 straight scoreless innings, things looked bleak for the Nationals. With their highly-anticipated Battle of the Beltway on tap, the Nats had to beat the Cubs and Kerry Wood making his first start of the season. Well, a little bit of lineup shake up did the trick as four players, including Damian Jackson and Marlon Anderson, homered in a 5-3 victory over the Cubs. Firmly in fourth place, the Nats can now look ahead to their three-game showdown against their natural regional rivals, the Orioles. more ›

Morning Roundup: Chevy Chase Complains Edition

Residents of the Northwest neighborhood are a little angry that increased police patrols -- caused by a rash of thefts -- have led to a higer number of parking tickets, or so writes the Washington Times. And what does the police have to say about that? Writes the Times: An official in the police department's 2nd District, which includes... more ›

Palmeiro Suspended for Steroid Use

Palmeiro Suspended for Steroid Use

Continuing in what has been a rough few months for baseball, Rafael Palmeiro of the Baltimore Orioles -- the team many District residents called their own prior to the arrival of the Nationals -- was given a 10-day suspension today for steroid use, reports the Post. The O's first baseman, who only two weeks ago celebrated his milestone 3,000 hits and 500+ home-runs, is the tenth player suspended so far this season for failing steroid tests mandated by Major League Baseball, and his suspension brings local relevance to a growing scandal over the use of performance enhancing drugs in professional sports. more ›

Who's Crazy For The Nationals?

It was just over two weeks ago that the Washington Nationals, to great fanfare, took the field at RFK Stadium for the first Major League Baseball game in Washington in over three decades. Years of political bickering, backroom negotiating, and hoping were finally put to rest as the team defeated the Arizona Diamondbacks in front of a capacity crowd. more ›

Random News on the Nats

Stadium Re-Naming Moves Forward: DCist reported last week that local pro-democracy activists are pushing to have RFK Stadium, currently searching for a $1.5-$2 million a year corporate sponsor, named the "Taxation Without Representation Field at RFK Stadium." The initiative's initial goal was $10,000 by April 3, but overwhelming support for the idea pushed them to up the ante to $20,000 and now $51,000 by April 14, the date of the Nationals home opener against the... more ›

A Post of Perspective

A Post of Perspective

The 2005-2006 baseball season is but a week away, yet a simmering conflict between Baltimore Orioles owner Peter Angelos and Major League Baseball officials has left the Washington Nationals without a television broadcasting deal. But the Post's creative online design put the whole dispute into perspective: relatively speaking, better no TV deal for the hometown team than no functioning government, as Iraq must well know. more ›

Confusion Abounds Around D.C. Baseball

On the heels of the latest controversy, DCist notes that there's been more baseball confusion surrounding our "team to be named later." First, the Post reported that a plan for purchasing season tickets in 2005 will be unveiled today. We're nearing the close of the business day and DCist has been hitting refresh on a number of baseball websites -- with no plan in sight. Though the Expos president, Tony Tavares, states that past delays "had nothing to do with the council's postponement of the stadium vote," DCist wonders what effect the ongoing stadium fued between Williams and Cropp is going to have on our tentative plans to see baseball in D.C. in the near future. more ›

The Post's baseball sources say that despite offers to compensate the Orioles franchise, Angelos has... more ›
