Another weekend means another round of sometimes difficult-to-navigate Metrorail service advisories. Once again, sections of the Blue and Orange lines are going quiet for more track work and—in this instance—sludge removal.
More Work on the Blue and Orange Lines This Weekend
Cracked Rail Causes Blue/Orange Line Delays
A cracked rail at the Rosslyn Metro station is causing delays on the Orange and Blue lines today.
Orange and Blue Lines Shut Down After Brake Breaks
Metrorail's Orange and Blue lines are currently suspended between Metro Center and Federal Center SW after an incident earlier this morning in which a piece of a Vienna-bound Orange train came loose and made contact with the third rail at the Smithsonian station, a Metro spokesman says.
WMATA's 'Farragut Crossing' Virtual Tunnel Opens Tomorrow
Good news, Farragut dwellers! No longer will the journey between North and West be a needlessly expensive one. For tomorrow, "Farragut Crossing" will finally be in place.
Orange Line Service Disrupted After Person Struck By Train
UPDATE (6:10 p.m.): We've now gotten word that the person who was struck by the train has been removed from the track, and people on the powerless train will soon be allowed to disembark. The Clarendon station could be closed for some time, however, so we'd definitely recommend either waiting it out, grabbing a cab, or any solution that does not involve expecting Orange Line service to be operating past Court House with any regularity for a little while.
Four D.C. Metro Station Names Could Change
Greater Greater Washington writes that the D.C. Department of Transportation has asked Metro to change the names of four Metro stations within city limits.
Largo Town Center Parking Garage Crime Getting Creepier
The Largo Town Center Metro station parking lot has been no stranger to crime in the past -- but the crimes being committed there appear to be getting more and more creepy.
Metro Labor Day Track Work: Your Turn, Northern Virginia
Are you a Virginia resident sticking around town this weekend? Well, better prepare yourself for some Blue and Orange Line delays -- WMATA is preparing to conduct what they're dubbing "major" track work along stretches of both over the three-day weekend.
Reminder: Metro To Close Four Orange/Blue Stations This Weekend
We've tried to remind you over the course of the last month, but as one final, last-minute notice: WMATA will not be operating Blue and Orange Line service between the Federal Center SW and Minnesota Avenue and Benning Road Metrorail stations this weekend.
Two Injured In Largo Town Center Shooting
We mentioned it briefly in this morning's roundup, but now it's been confirmed: two people were injured during an early-morning carjacking at the Largo Town Center Metro station during which gunshots were fired.
Massive Disruption On Orange, Blue Lines Begins Tonight
Don't forget: Metro will be closing five Orange Line stations and cutting off Blue Line service between Stadium-Armory and Benning Road beginning at 10 p.m. tonight. If you usually take either line to get between the District and Prince George's County, be sure to head out early tonight -- if you don't, you'll probably be stuck waiting for a Metro shuttle bus to come around.
Metro To Close Five Orange Line Stations From March 4-6
It isn't part of the transit agency's Year of Three-Day Weekend Closures, but it'll still be a real pain for many local residents: Metro announced this morning that service between Stadium-Armory and New Carrollton on the Orange Line and between Stadium-Armory and Benning Road on the Blue Line will be shut down during the first weekend in March.
What To Expect From Metro During Presidents Day Weekend
We've been talking quite a bit about other WMATA-related stories of late, but we wanted to make sure that you haven't forgotten about Metro's Year of Three-Day Weekend Closures, the next round of which is slated for this upcoming weekend. Both the Federal Triangle and Smithsonian stations will be closed for the entirety of Presidents Day weekend, between 10 p.m. on February 18 and closing on February 21.
Major Delays On Orange, Blue Lines This Morning
What a terrible morning for Blue and Orange Line riders: service on both lines between Foggy Bottom and Federal Triangle was shut down due to a switch malfunction for about 20 minutes this morning. The two lines were split into two sections, though we're now told that the split is no longer in effect and trains are running on a normal schedule. Meanwhile, DCist reader Emily St. Martin sent in this image of the small fire which broke out at Metro Center this morning -- there was some confusion about whether the station was closed or open, but the issue involving the fire appears to be cleared up, too. (For what it's worth, Metro called both of those delays "dire.")
Metro This Weekend: Beware The Orange and Blue Lines
Is everyone ready for another weekend of pure Metro frustration? (After all, it's been so long since the last one!) Well, get ready: this weekend's maintenance schedule is pretty wicked. As a reminder, Metro's online TripPlanner doesn't feature any of this information, so you should check out this webpage before you head out this weekend.
Metro Had "Near Miss" Near Section Of Track Where Man Was Killed Last Year
On September 10, 2009, John Moore, a 44-year-old Metro employee who was working on a section of track between Braddock Road and National Airport was struck by an oncoming train. Moore later died as a result of those injuries, becoming the third Metro employee fatality in a three-month span after the June 22 Red Line crash. Now that you've been reminded of that, you'll probably just as flabbergasted as I was to hear that a group of Metro workers were nearly run down last month near the same section of track where Moore was killed. Adam Tuss reports via Twitter that a "near miss," involving a group of maintenance workers, occurred last month: the workers were on the outbound tracks, when a broken-down train on the inbound side led Metro operators to reroute trains to the outbound side -- but they never told the workers that the trains were coming. Luckily, someone saw the train coming and the workers were able to avoid injury. At least Metro immediately reported the incident to the Tri-State Oversight Committee.
This Weekend's Blue and Orange Line Track Work Canceled
Washingtonians were preparing for a second straight weekend of long waits between Metro trains on the Orange, Blue and Red Lines, but Metro announced this morning that they were canceling the weekend's planned track work on the Orange and Blue Lines. Riders "should expect normal service along both lines this weekend," according to WMATA's press release. The Blue and Orange Line work -- a switch replacement at the Rosslyn station, one of the more time-consuming pieces of maintenance Metro undertakes -- will be rescheduled for a later time. There's no word on the reason for the postponement, but it should somewhat alleviate at least some of the frustration that two straight weekends with sizable Metro waits can cause.
Super Fun Monday Morning Orange/Blue Line Delays!
Count yourselves lucky if you don't come into the city via the Orange or Blue lines through Rosslyn. Metro is reporting a train experiencing mechanical difficulties outside the Foggy Bottom station, causing Orange and Blue line trains to share the same track all the way between Clarendon and Farragut West. We're being told to expect delays in both directions as of 8:19 a.m., which, given the usual congestion in that area at this time of the morning, we can imagine will be pretty craptastic. Good luck out there, commuters.
Blue/Orange Line Delays Downtown
WMATA is reporting an earlier "situation" that has been resolved at L'Enfant Plaza that's causing delays in both directions on the Orange and Blue lines. Word is that trains are sharing the same track between Federal Triangle and Federal Center SW stations due to some sort of mechanical problem. Heads up for your commute home.
Federal Triangle Reopens After Smoke Closed Station
WMATA says delays in both directions on the Orange and Blue lines should be expected after the Federal Triangle Metro station closed for a brief time at about 12:40 p.m. The station was closed after reports of smoke due to a mechanical failure. Federal Triangle reopened at about 1:15 p.m., but trains will be sharing the same track between Farragut West and Smithsonian for an undetermined amount of time. Plan accordingly.
Orange & Blue Line Delays Expected
WMATA says an earlier train malfunction near the Clarendon Metro station, which has since been cleared, is still causing residual delays in both directions on the Orange and Blue lines. This doesn't look like a total Orange line catastrophe like the sort we've seen earlier this summer, but plan ahead for delays, especially considering the Nats have a home game tonight.
Metro Considers Blue Line Split
Metro sent around a press release yesterday announcing that they were considering alternating rush hour Blue line trains between their regular route that follows the Orange line and a new route that would send them up along the Yellow line.
Metro on Reducing Train Cars: Sike!
At the end of November, Metro's new rail chief, Dave Kubicek, decided to switch off-peak trains running during the winter months to the shorter, 4-car only versions as a cost-saving maneuver. Ridership is down in the winter, he reasoned, so Metro can get away with fewer cars. This morning Metro decided to scrap the entire plan and bring back 6-car trains immediately. Metro General Manager John Catoe told the Post he decided to restore service...
Transit on Thursday: At Long Last
If you’re a regular reader of Transit on Thursday, you’ll have noted week after week of Green line delays over the past few months caused by the testing of new rail cars. Good news – those delays could soon cease. Metro is getting ready to stop testing and starting using, reports WTOP. The new rail cars, featuring two different designs, will be brought into service by Christmas. The first design is carpetless, with lots of...
Transit on Thursday: Fare Hike Proposal Edition
WTOP's Adam Tuss is the first to the gate with news of Metro's Board of Directors having agreed today to a fare hike proposal to put forward to the public. Here's the details: >> Peak Metrorail base fares would increase 30 cents, from $1.35 to $1.65 >> Off-peak rail service would remain at $1.35 >> The maximum rail fare would jump 80 cents, to $4.70 >> If you use SmarTrip, bus fares will remain...
Transit on Thursday: Exit Not, Pay Not
If you don't want to pay a toll, just don't leave the city. Information is sketchy at best, but the federal government may soon propose a toll on cars entering the city via the 14th Street bridge, reports The Examiner. According to the story, the proposal seems to be nothing more than another one of those fabulous pipe dreams feds float from time to time for improving our city. Like Sen. Sam Brownback's "flat tax"...
Transit on Thursday: Safety Dance Edition
This week on Transit on Thursday, good news from DDOT for people who don't like getting hit by cars, and Metro plans on fixin' some things that really need fixin'. Score One For Pedestrians: We will soon get to say farewell to annoying sidewalk closures caused by those greedy development projects. No more braving the fury of cars as we find a way around. And no more crossing to the other side. Builders will...
