After having toured and recorded for over a decade, Robert Cray had a breakthrough with his 1986 release, Strong Persuader, which included his signature tune, "Smoking Gun". Though the subject of criticism in those early days because of his willingness to embrace contemporary production techniques and incorporate soul and rock elements into his version of the blues, Cray's recorded output over 30 plus years on the scene and continuous touring around the world prove that he is the real deal. His prodigious guitar work and soulful voice have withstood the test of time, and he is now rightfully regarded as one of the great blues artists. The 55-year old Grammy winner's latest release, 2006's Live From Across the Pond, was recorded over a seven night stand at London's famed Royal Albert Hall and captures his band's potent live sound.

The 5th Annual Congressional Blues Festival has been announced, and will take place on Wednesday, April 23 at the Kennedy Center's South Plaza. This year's festival lineup includes the stellar Robert Cray (pictured), Elvin Bishop, Mudcat, the duo of Sarah Lee Guthrie and Johnny Irion, and others. The festival is a free event, but tickets are limited and are available through a lottery system on the festival's website. Lottery registration begins Monday, March 10 at 8 a.m.

The smokin' eight piece band just blazed its way through an uptempo blues shuffle, with each tuxedo-clad musician taking an extended solo. The rhythm section got soft and settled into a groovy vamp as one of the horn players stepped up to the mic and announced,"Ladies and gentlemen! The Undisputed King of the Blues, B.B. King!"

While there are some great shows coming up in January, this week is still subject to holiday doldrums. Here are a few shows to check out.

>> Beginning tonight, piano legend Ahmad Jamal (pictured with bassist James Cammack) continues his annual tradition of closing each year with a week-long residence at Blues Alley. Daily 8 p.m. and 10 p.m. sets begin tonight and run through Sunday. Tickets are $30 + $12.50 surcharge/drink minimum. On New Year's Eve, the Keter Betts memorial band, which includes celebrated guitarist Paul Bollenback and local drumming ace Lenny Robinson, will join Jamal to ring in 2008 with 6:30 p.m. and 10:30 p.m. sets. Trumpeter and composer Terence Blanchard (pictured right) is a friend to D.C. This review is long past due. DCist began its jazz coverage over six months ago and only now are we covering a performance at the venerable Twins Jazz.
