First it was cupcakes. And then food trucks. Now it's fancy burger joints. We seem to have a thing for lining up to wait for food trends; the more widespread the trend, the longer the lines seem to get, ironically enough.
Where's the Line for the Next Food Trend?
Bobby Flay to Throwdown with Chef Gillian Clark
Chef Bobby Flay will be returning to the D.C. area to challenge Chef Gillian Clark's fried chicken -- the show will air January 19 at 8:30 p.m. on the Food Network. This isn't the first foray into television for Clark, though: her fried chicken, served at the General Store and Post Office Tavern in Silver Spring, has also been featured on Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives. We doubt Clark'll have any problems taking Flay down -- ten bucks says he decides to coat his chicken with potato chips and Anaheim chili powder, and call it Crunchchicken. (Just be sure to trademark it before he does!)
Burger Chain Wars: Bow Before Crunchburger, D.C.
We noted in Friday's Weekly Feed that celebrity chef Bobby Flay will be the latest to throw his toque into the D.C. burger craze, as he plans on opening a branch of his Bobby's Burger Palace chain at 2121 K Street NW. Now, the fact that burger joints are taking over this town is hardly a new gripe for our beloved commentariat -- but we thought that it might be appropriate to highlight the insanity which comes up when a market like ours is saturated with restaurants all specializing in the same menu item. Behold, the trademarked "Crunchburger"!
Bobby Flay Vs. Another Local Chef
Tonight at 9 p.m. on the Food Network, Bobby Flay once again attempts to soften his "rugged" image in Throwdown with Bobby Flay. He's challenged Chantilly-based Thai Basil Chef Nongkran Daks to a pad thai throwdown. In Flay's previous visit to the region, Granville Moore's Teddy Folkman put the smack down in a moules frites challenge. In the meantime, check out a little homemade slideshow and Daks' audition tape.
The Weekly Feed: Iron-Clad Edition
Allez Cuisine! From Jack Abramoff's Signatures to his own restaurant, Farrah Olivia, Morou Ouattara plans to step into a new venue. His eye is on Kitchen Stadium as he competes for the title of the Next Iron Chef. The first episode airs Sunday, 9 p.m. on the Food Network. Eight chefs with the help of Lufthansa Airlines (yay product placement!) will be traveling through Europe and competing against each other to join Mario Batali, Cat...
D.C. Chef Finalist in Hell's Kitchen
It has only been a few months since D.C. last had a reality TV star/contestant to fall behind -- unless you include our very own Marion Barry and the saga of his various trials and tribulations. But somehow it has escaped our attention that local chef Rahman “Rock” Harper, Executive Chef at B. Smith’s in Union Station, has been competing in this summer’s season of Hell’s Kitchen. The oversight could be due to the fact...
Eating In: Local Organic Lamb
Local. Organic. Butcher. There are few things in life that excite us the way that those three words do. One reason being that we like to support local purveyors, two organic is always good, and three we love us some good meat! But where does one find such a place? Although more organic markets are popping up, organic butchers still seem few and far between. We were lucky enough to get a tip on The Organic Butcher located in McLean. Before we go any further we know what you’re thinking- “McLean?!?!” We realize that it is outside the beltway and were a little hesitant at first, but once we experienced some of the best lamb we ever had it completely justified the trip. Any so-called “foodie” would understand that sometimes to find the good stuff you have to put a little more effort into it than walking two blocks from your house (but not to worry, they are shopping around for a spot to open a D.C. location). That being said, back to subject at hand.
Eating In: Jaleo's "Calamares A La Plancha"
We recently visited the Crystal City Jaleo, to not only partake in watching the now famous “Iron Chef: America - Andrés vs. Flay in battle Goat” but also to support one of Andrés favorite charities, D.C. Central Kitchen. We certainly enjoyed watching José Andrés pummel Bobby Flay, but we got even more satisfaction from eating a couple (okay, more than a couple) of Jaleo’s delectable offerings. This left us with the difficult task of choosing one of our favorites to feature in this week’s column, never mind the pressure of re-creating a recipe of an Iron Chef champion.
Iron Chef Recap: Flay vs. Andrés
This post from new DCist contributor, Matt Cordell How do D.C. chefs stack up? Last night, representatives were put to the test when José Andrés (owner of Zatinya, Café Atlantico, Jaleo, Oyamel, and minibar by josé andrés) and his sous chefs, Katsuya Fukushima and Ruben Garcia, stepped into Kitchen Stadium to do battle on Food Network's Iron Chef America. Despite being advertised in advance here, here, and here (looking like the Spanish Terminator), José "chose"...
D.C.'s Chef Morou Loses Battle Birdseye
Washington chefs fell to 1-2 in Iron Chef America competitions, as Bobby Flay defeated the uni-monikered Morou in Battle Frozen Peas last night on the Food Network show -- two months after Galileo's Roberto Donna avenged his own loss to Iron Chef Masaharu Morimoto. Morou -- the former Signatures chef who had earned the right to take on an Iron Chef when he topped former 1789 chef Ris Lacoste and Tosca's Cesare Lanfranconi in the...
Tasting Notes
This weekend, the DCist Food and Drink squad took in the 7th Annual Washington, D.C. International Wine & Food Festival at the Omni Shoreham in Woodley Park. Wine tastings, cooking demonstrations, and food giveaways spanned three ballrooms -- a fitting size for a popular event that had, in previous years, occupied the main convention hall at the new Convention Center. The change in venue didn't amount to a change in tenor. Perhaps because wine-tasting evokes...
Sear and Loathing in Washington
Watching food personality Rachael Ray on television makes us want to buy exactly $40 worth of "EVOO," break the glass bottles the EVOO came in, and use the oily shards to cut the word "yummo" into our skin just to feel again. Watching chef Bobby Flay on television makes us want to toss ourselves on a smoking-hot grill, smear ancho-chili sauce and mango chutney on the marks in our flesh, and jump on a cutting board to proclaim our hatred for him. Our reactions are relatively mild.
Alton Brown Is Just Here to Sign Books
If you're looking for an entertaining (and appetizing) respite to the inevitable Inauguration hoopla we'll be dealing with next week, DCist suggests venturing down to Northern Virginia to see culinary hero Alton Brown sign copies of his new book "I'm Just Here for More Food". Brown, host of Food Network's Good Eats, will be signing copies at Barnes & Noble in Arlington at noon Tuesday and at Borders in Tysons Corner at 7:30 p.m. For our Baltimore readers, he'll also be at the Barnes & Noble in White Marsh at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.
