Ward 1 D.C. Council member Jim Graham sent the following email out to the Columbia Heights email list just before 1 p.m.:
Hains Point is something of a peaceful getaway for the area's cyclists and runners -- generally free from vehicular traffic, the 3-mile loop also known as East Potomac Park is flat and affords views of the Washington Channel and the Potomac River. And while the park is nowhere near any of the city's office buildings or monuments, one cyclist recently learned not to assume that the U.S. Park Police that patrols it isn't sensitive to perceived security threats.
Here's a story we missed from earlier this week: Via the Boston Globe, D.C. taxicab driver Ermiyas A. Asfaw was arraigned on Monday in Boston on charges of joking that he was a member of Al Qaeda and that he planned to "blow things up" at Logan International Airport. Asfaw was checking in for a flight on AirTran on Saturday night when an agent asked him why he had stickers on his luggage from Dubai....
Good morning, Washington, and our apologies to the residents of Montgomery County — we hate to be the bearers of bad news. But it looks like speed cameras will be coming to your fair municipality. The general assembly has overridden Governor Ehrlich's second veto, putting the wheels in motion for a statewide program. Montgomery County will be the lucky recipient of the first pilot cameras. Gallaudet Still A Mess: Protests; counter-protests; defiant non-resignations. And now...
So suddenly it's chilly? Yesterday we were all sweaty messes, but today, with highs predicted to stay in the 60s, we're wearing sweaters. All this temperature-related confusion has led us to look longingly at the Southwest Airlines web site, since the airline finally began service from Dulles this morning. Cheap flights to Vegas are looking pretty sweet. And while we're of course very sad to be reminded of the demise of our hometown airline, we take some comfort knowing that the airline that replaced it actually trains its flight attendants be snarky. Who needs an assigned seat when you've got that much sass on your hands?
And so ends the suspense -- Adrian Fenty is the Post's pick for mayor. Though Fenty has held a comfortable lead in recent weeks, the Post's endorsement was seen as Linda Cropp's final chance in what has become a hard-fought campaign. Today's endorsement is sure to give Fenty the win next Tuesday, with the Post recognizing his "can-do quality" and his "vision of the city that challenges the best in people." And maybe to add...
In the 70's, Karen Carpenter sang that "Rainy Days and Mondays" always got her down. Well, this would chart as a real downer, as today combines the two. On a cheerier note, Saturday morning I took in the unveiling of Cultural DC's Shaw Heritage Trail, which included a fabulous performance by the Shiloh Baptist Church choir and had a great turn-out from the community; check out the Trail, and the local Shaw businesses, sometime in...
A DCist reader has told us that a bomb threat has been reported near the Judiciary Square Metro station. The D.C. government office building located at 441 4th Street NW is closed to incoming and outgoing traffic, and WMATA is reporting that the 4th Street/Courthouse Metro entrance is likewise closed. We'll report on details as they emerge; please leave your own updates in the comments.
Runners and spectators for this Sunday’s 29th Marine Corps Marathon will have to cope with extensive new security measures. The Post http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A3620-2004Oct27.html">reported yesterday that race organizers have implemented new measures in light of the race's close proximity to the upcoming election and the American military presence in Iraq. For the first time, there will be five screening points around the entrance to Zone 6, race organizers' term for the area that encompasses the start...
