A sea of pink swept through the city today as Susan G. Komen for the Cure®'s Breast Cancer 3-Day Walk kicked off and twisted its way through Washington. The event extends through Sunday, so keep your eyes peeled for thousands upon thousands of pink clad women—and several men too—winding their ways through the Nation’s Capitol. Walkers will cover 20 miles per day, and the Bethesda Metro Station will serve as an official cheering station on Saturday from 10:30 to 3:30 p.m. Dupont Circle serves as Sunday’s cheering station, as participants wind their way through the Zoo, past the White House, and to a closing ceremony at the steps of the Lincoln Memorial. The Post's Nikita Stewart reports what members of the D.C. Council apparently already knew, but the public did not: Ward 3 D.C. Council member Mary Cheh was diagnosed with breast cancer last fall. Cheh has already undergone radiation treatment and a lumpectomy at Sibley Memorial Hospital, and told Stewart that her doctors have said her prognosis is good (she'll continue to be treated with drugs for the next five years). The Council member said she is disclosing her illness to draw attention to the need for women to be tested often. "I want to be a poster child for early detection," she told the Post. more ›
