Season's Eatings: Strawberry-Jalapeño Jam

Season's Eatings: Strawberry-Jalapeño Jam

You might not spread it onto your morning bagel (though you certainly could!), but strawberry-jalapeño jam could serve as the anchor for an entire savory brunch on its own. Now is the time to make it, with mounds of sweet, juicy berries in abundance at local markets. more ›

Early-to-Rise Brunchers Can Soon Get Sunday Fix

Early-to-Rise Brunchers Can Soon Get Sunday Fix

Until recently, if you wanted a Bloody Mary with your Sunday brunch, you'd have to wait until 10 a.m. But as of last week, early morning Sunday drinking became a possibility, as restaurants were given the go-ahead to apply to serve alcohol starting at 8 a.m. more ›

The Weekly Feed: Leafy Greens Edition

The Weekly Feed: Leafy Greens Edition

Sesame Street and Sam Kass say we should eat our colors, but dark, leafy greens are an often neglected and misunderstood "anytime food". Kale can be tough and bitter and collards are reduced to gray-green slime if overcooked. Swiss chard, now overflowing at the farmers' market and on seasonal menus, is a good alternative because it's flavor is milder and it cooks quickly (think sauteed spinach). Most importantly, chard can be downright delicious when prepared well. more ›

At The Potter's House, Brunch Is Great, Brunch Is Good

I never paid The Potter's House much mind as a place to dine until I noticed a banner outside and some leaflets left around the neighborhood advertising a new Saturday brunch buffet. All you can eat from a modest selection breakfast items and other savories for $12.95, and featuring a rotating international selection each week. more ›

Brunch At Tallula, Revisited

Several years and several chefs ago, DCist told you about the excellent brunch options at Tallula. Since then, the restaurant has gone through numerous changes, and its parent company, Neighborhood Restaurant Group, has expanded its reach from Virginia into the District with Birch & Barley/ChurchKey. But with all the change, Tallula and its neighbor EatBar continue to be a destination for great food and drink. more ›

For Area Blogger, Brunch At Kramerbooks Becomes Distressing Sartrian Ordeal

For Area Blogger, Brunch At Kramerbooks Becomes Distressing Sartrian Ordeal

For some, "Hell is other people," but for one local blogger, hell is just one person: the maitre d' at Kramerbooks & Afterwords, who governed over last Sunday's brunchtime with a haughty manner and a tendency toward "psychological abuse." There were snippy quips over bathroom tokens, for example, and memories that seem to have been remembered in German. But the whole matter ended up taking an existential turn for the worse:

I also heard Herr Säuglingsmörder berating several other patrons, notably someone who missed their name being called. The patron tried to insist that he had been in the store the whole time, but Lord Testicalshredder at his little podium of power called him out for having a Starbucks cup in his hand - BUSTED! But something Yelly McImpatient said to the now-indicted customer struck me: more ›

The Weekly Feed: She Just Wants to Sleep In Edition

If you're lucky enough to have your mom or grandma somewhere easily accessible, then you have the distinct pleasure of celebrating Mother's Day with the real McCoy. As for me, I'll have to settle for a teleconference with my mom while eating pancakes shaped like Mickey Mouse that I'll pretend she made for me. Sniff. I love you, Mom! more ›

Tallula Brunch-heads

Tallula Brunch-heads

As you might know from a previous post, we’re a fan of brunch, and, in particular, Majestic Café’s renditions of Southern and Creole. But Majestic doesn’t offer eggs Benedict, which is a standard in most brunch-oriented places. Even the worst of the worst access-road diners offer the stuff. So, sadly, we have to go elsewhere for our Benedict fix. This past weekend, we were moved by several good reviews to try out Tallula -- the... more ›

One Brunch in Bangkok

One Brunch in Bangkok

Although we find the D.C. area’s Jose Andres-induced tendency toward small plates occasionally irksome, Rabieng has adapted to this trend in a novel way. During Saturday and Sunday brunch, Rabieng showcases its interpretation of Bangkok’s numerous food stall delights on its “Thai Street Food Dim Sum Brunch Menu.” more ›

Out and About: Weekend Picks

Out and About: Weekend Picks

Man, after last night's DCist Happy Hour, we're not sure we want to do anything for the rest of the weekend except curl up in our beds and pound Advil. But for the rest of you folks, here are some events we think are worth dropping by. FRIDAY: >>In this week's Art Agenda, we erroneously reported that photographer Samantha Wolov's exhibit opened Saturday evening; the opening actually takes place tonight from 6 p.m. to 9... more ›

Bloody Marys and Bunny Slippers

Bloody Marys and Bunny Slippers

DCist was critical of new Dupont "restolounge" Cloud before, noting that the white-on-white, bar with beds theme was feeling pretty tired. But owner Savino Recine didn't stop there. In fact, he's taken the bed theme to its logical conclusion. Beginning Sunday, May 8th, Cloud is encouraging patrons to come to their Sunday brunch service clad in their pajamas. more ›

Vox Populi: 'Best Bets' Are In

Vox Populi: 'Best Bets' Are In

The results are in: The Post's 2004 Best Bets Readers' Choice Awards were decided today. And the winners are ... (drumroll, please): Pretty much all the same places that won last year! But that's OK -- by and large, DCist approves of the victors (though we'll never understand why Starbucks consistently comes in the top three of Best Coffee Shop; same with Borders for Best Bookstore. Isn't this supposed to be about D.C.'s best local and non-totally-massive-and-impersonal establishments?). more ›
