Where's the Line for the Next Food Trend?

Where's the Line for the Next Food Trend?

First it was cupcakes. And then food trucks. Now it's fancy burger joints. We seem to have a thing for lining up to wait for food trends; the more widespread the trend, the longer the lines seem to get, ironically enough. more ›

Nats Park Shake Shack to Open Next Week

Nearer, My Roadside Burger, To Thee: Shake Shack's Hiring

Nearer, My Roadside Burger, To Thee: Shake Shack's Hiring

I realize that many of you think we need another burger joint in this city like we need a hole drilled into our skulls, but -- like it or not -- Shake Shack coming to town is kind of a big deal. Today, DCist reader Amy Bocian spotted this sign outside of what will surely be the scene of long queues for the Shack's vaunted griddle burgers, onion rings and krinkle-cut fries at 1216 18th Street NW. more ›

Case of Lawyers v. Burgers Goes For Lawyers

Tim Carman, who has been doing a bang-up job covering the "burgers vs. lawyers" lawsuit, tweeted from the proceedings that D.C. Superior Court Judge John M. Mott has ruled in favor of law firm Steptoe and Johnson -- and that Rogue States will have to cease grilling operations by the close of business today. more ›

Tomorrow is National Cheeseburger Day. But Z-Burger is celebrating today by selling cheeseburgers with all the fixings for $1 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m at their Tenleytown location (4321 Wisconsin Avenue NW). Just say to the cashier, "Cheeseburger, Freeburger" even though...yeah...it's not technically free. more ›

Zagat: Five Guys Beats In-N-Out For Best Burger

Take that, California! Zagat released the results of its 2010 fast food survey and Five Guys actually beat the much-vaunted In-N-Out to win the Best Burger category. It's a big win for the chain, even though they did finish fourth behind the first-placed Animal Stylers in the Top Food Among Large Chains category. There plenty of things to debate out the full list -- like Starbucks having better coffee than Dunkin' Donuts. (Heresy!) more ›

Nothing Says "Thanks, Mom" Like A Free Burger

Nothing Says "Thanks, Mom" Like A Free Burger

I would assume that if you're lucky enough to be spending Mother's Day with your mom, your plans probably include a meal more dignified than a burger and fries. But far be it from us to deny Mom, on her day, if she wants to gulp a milkshake in lieu of the traditional brunch. Z Burger in Tenleytown is more than happy to oblige such Mamas: the burger purveyor with a penchant for password-related promotion will be giving away free meals -- consisting of a regular, cheese or veggie burger, a side of fries or onion rings, and a milkshake -- to anyone who brings their mom to the location at 4321 Wisconsin Avenue NW location and recites the password "ThankZ Mom." The deal's on until 10 p.m. tonight. more ›

Study Snacks at The Tombs: Books not Needed

For years I had read that Georgetown student hangout The Tombs served one of the better burgers in the city, and for years I meant to put that claim to the test. But a trek to G'Town for a bite at a subterranean college bar owned by the Clyde's Restaurant Group? I always found something better to do. When I finally visited, I discovered something even better than cooked-to-order burgers, which were juicy thick ones that do indeed live up to their reputation. more ›

Burger-pocalypse at BGR

Burger-pocalypse at BGR

What does BGR stand for? Though it could easily be booger, in this case it's burger, which is what you'll get for free if you go to a local BGR The Burger Joint today with the letters "inked" on any body part. And yes, they can just be written on your hand with a ballpoint pen. more ›

Five Guys, Ray's Hell-Burgers Open Today

In Arlington, Michael Landrum continues to build on his bovine consumption empire (Ray's the Steaks, Ray's the Classics) with tonight's opening of Ray's Hell-Burgers. Although the shop's official name is Ray's Butcher Burgers, the "hell" is more appropriate with their 10 oz., char-grilled, prime beef burger. A bevy of toppings are available, too, including: sauteed mushrooms, grilled red onions, sauteed peppers, charred jalapenos, beefsteak tomatoes, roasted garlic, and dill or bread and butter pickle chips. Specialty cheeses will also be available. (Stinky epoisse!) more ›

The Weekly Feed: New Internet Buddy Edition

The Weekly Feed: New Internet Buddy Edition

Chatty Cathys Warren Rojas of Northern Virginia Magazine was on Rockwell this week shilling his new chat, Grill Warren. Do we not have enough food chats/chogs/Q&As in this town? I guess it's an alternative if you can't get your question answered by one of the three Ts, but this is getting a little out of hand. Or maybe DCist is behind the curve on this one, and we should be starting our own chat. But... more ›

Five Guys Opens in Midtown; NY Grinds to Halt

Five Guys Opens in Midtown; NY Grinds to Halt

We missed this when it happened a couple of weeks ago, but is it really ever too late to point and laugh at New Yorkers? We didn't think so. So, people are probably aware that Five Guys franchises are proliferating across the Eastern U.S. like nuclear weapons in central Asia. The greasy, peanut-laden fingers of our locally born burger stand have spread as far as Delafield, Wisconsin; Nashville, Tennessee; and Miami, Florida. They've even broken... more ›

The Weekly Feed: F-bomb Edition

Fried Chicken Frenzy Returns Fried chicken fanatics have something to get excited about. Both Colorado Kitchen and Ray's the Classics have restored their famous versions of the dish. Everyone lamented when Gillian Clark pulled her chicken from the menu a few years ago. But now, she is hosting burgers and fried chicken nights on December 11 and January 8 (the second Tuesday of the month). Apparently her chicken is so good that she told... more ›

The Weekly Feed: Burgers, Belgians, and BoJo Edition

Pour Out a Forty for the Childe Harold The pilgrimage is at its end. After 40 years nestled on 20th street NW in Dupont Circle, the Childe Harold has closed its doors for good. A victim of increasing rents and lessors unwilling to negotiate, the Harold is one more example of how the face of Dupont Circle is ever-changing. The venerable institution held a lot of history, partly because of its ties to the music... more ›

Five O'Clock Meeting: Axis

Five O'Clock Meeting: Axis

Written by DCist Contributor Eric Denman On U street NW between 13th and 14th, nestled between Polly's and a nail salon, Axis is settling into a rhythm and starting to be a very solid contender in an increasingly crowded strip. The wine list, which averages $12 $8 by the glass, is respectable, but the real reason to come here is for the tap list. Although it doesn't boast a huge variety of obscure seasonals, the... more ›

Splash to Offer Daiquiris to Frustrated Adams Morgan

Splash to Offer Daiquiris to Frustrated Adams Morgan

More grist for the mill of discontent among some Adams Morgan residents over the state of 18th Street, right on the heels of D.C. Council action that could limit the number of tavern licenses in the neighborhood. The Washington Business Journal reports that an unholy trifecta of daiquiris, skin and chicken wings is moving in to the space formerly occupied by the controversial after hours spot, Santa Rosa. The new bar, to be named Splash,... more ›

Elsewhere in the Ist-a-verse

LAist is experimenting with blogging dates from J-Date, but finds the best men are found offline. Some date vicariously online and that is one reason why porn is big -- really freaking big -- so they ask if they should cover XXX since the heart of it lays in the city's San Fernando Valley. A writer grapples with her food porn photography obsession, another gets censored on Flickr, one gets scooped by the LA... more ›

Hamburglar?

Hamburglar?

In honor of National Burger Heritage Awareness Month, our favorite Internet travel buddy Gridskipper opted to run a post lauding the awesomeness of Washington's hamburgers. We have no quarrel there; they are awesome, and we feel it completely appropriate to exalt their bovinity. Hmm. Bovinity. Where have we heard that word before? Bovinity, bovinity, bovinity, bovinity... But Gridskipper's list is certainly respectable — incorporating true burger all-stars like Colorado Kitchen and Tallula — even if... more ›

Morning Roundup: More Than Meets the Eye Edition

It's always tough to wake up early and get these first posts of the day done and up on the site, but it's even tougher when confronted with a redesign of washingtonpost.com without warning. Chainsaw Dan's Got Something Up His Sleeve

Chainsaw Dan's Got Something Up His Sleeve

And it's burgers! Redskins owner Daniel Snyder revealed today that he will purchase Johnny Rockets, the ubiquitous chain-diner. With District locations in Georgetown, Dupont Circle, and Union Station, most of us are probably aware of the grease-trap's existence even if we don't quite remember many of our experiences there -- the restaurant's hours tend to attract the late-night stumbly crowd. For those of us unfamiliar with the chain, Johnny Rockets tries its very hardest to... more ›
