Driving a Metrobus is an incredibly difficult job -- but probably never more so than when a kid unexpectedly leaps out into the street. Sometimes, Metrobus drivers can manage to steer out of the way; sometimes, like in the video above, they can't.
Boy Escapes Being Hit by Metrobus With Only Bruises
Police Release Footage of Metrobus Shooting Suspects
D.C. police have ramped up efforts to find two suspects who they believe were involved in the murder of 22-year-old Demetrius Thompson on a Metrobus on shortly after midnight on Thursday, releasing footage of the two suspects as they boarded the bus.
Yup, That Rapture Guy Is Still Making Predictions
In case you had forgotten, Harold Camping -- whose ramblings single-handedly resurrected the billboard advertising business -- was only kidding about that whole everyone dying in May thing. October 21, says Camping, is the real judgment day. No, any day but the International Day of the Nacho!
Circulator Launches East of the River Service
For the first time since it launched six years ago, the D.C. Circulator will be crossing the Anacostia River and serving communities in wards 7 and 8.
Man With Gunshot Wound Rode Bus, Train For Two-Plus Hours
Last night, we mentioned that Metro Transit Police were asking the public to help indentify whoever shot a man at an Oxon Hill bus stop on Sunday. But that's not the whole story.
WMATA Seeking More Evidence in Bus Violence Investigation
It is, unfortunately, a fairly common situation: a bus driver gets into a heated argument with a rider. More times than is acceptable, the driver gets the worst of it. It's rare that the rider is the one on the end of an assault -- but that's exactly what happened in the video above.
East of the River Circulator Route Revealed
After a series of public meetings over the past two months, the District Department of Transportation has finally revealed the routing of the first Circulator bus which will travel across the Anacostia River.
Metro Performance: Lower Standards Help A Little
A wise man once told me that if you lower your expectations enough, you'll rarely be disappointed. It appears that philosophy has found a home at WMATA, where a new report shows that Metrorail trains are now meeting agency goals for on-time performance -- but only because the transit agency lowered its standards.
Transit Union: Some Metrobus Drivers May No-Show Tomorrow
Rut roh: according to the Washington Post, some Metrobus drivers might not show up for work tomorrow over concerns that the transit agency is not taking their safety seriously.
Perhaps The Most Unreassuring Thing That Could Be Said
After a commercial tour bus flipped over on Interstate 95 in Virginia yesterday morning, killing four people and injuring dozens more, WAMU decided that they'd take a trip down to Chinatown to ask about safety on the buses which operate from there. The result is hardly assuring.
Bus Crashes Into KFC in Silver Spring
There's some pretty wild imagery coming out of Montgomery County this morning, where a Ride On bus crashed into a Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurant on the 12400 block of Georgia Avenue near the Glenmont Metro station.
Is This The End of the Chinatown Bus?
Ah, Chinatown buses: chariots of the frugal, the thrifty, the person looking for the cheapest possible way to get up and down the Eastern Seaboard. It's almost a rite of passage to take at least one spin on the various bus lines which originate from and stop in the District -- and even with the ascent of corporate-backed, low-cost, modern-amenity lines like BoltBus and Megabus, people are still scraping out a Jackson to get to New York on the fly. But while more competition might not have sunk the dirt-cheap bus business, a new District law just might.
WMATA Launches Budget Survey, Schedules Public Hearings
I know, I know, we're tired of taking budget surveys, too. But since next week is WMATA budget hearing week, and Metro is suggesting cutting increasing weekend headways and bus service, its probably worth taking a few minutes out to let them know what you think about the proposed fiscal year 2012 budget.
Metro Station Manager Arrested For Fatal 2008 Bus Crash
U.S. Marshals took Metro employee Ronald W. Taylor into custody at the Cheverly Metro station this morning on charges stemming from a 2008 bus crash which killed a California man in Foggy Bottom.
First A Possible Government Shutdown, And Now This?
It looks like the incredibly specific End of Days advertising campaign by Oakland, California-based Family Radio Worldwide has finally made its way to the District, appearing on, of all things, a Metrobus. (Insert your own joke about how riding a Metro vehicle can often make one wish that the world would end here.)
Councilmember Tommy Wells Takes Bus, Eats Fruit
That's Councilmember Tommy Wells (D-Ward 6) in the video, taking the bus. This is part of Wells' new Rediscover the Bus campaign, aiming to look at other systems as models to improve service and thus attract new riders.
The Metrobus system cannot simply be a commuter route for getting people in and out of the city for their workday - it should provide reliable and attractive alternatives to move about our neighborhoods, support our local small businesses, and connect us to all the amenities throughout the city.
Megabus and Boltbus Get New Pickup/Dropoff Locations
Passengers riding intercity bus lines Megabus and Boltbus have been wished a bon voyage from the asphalt of the city square on the 900 block of H Street NW. Now, the two lines are saying that same thing to the square itself, moving to two separate locations. Lydia DePillis is first to the news that impending construction of the CityCenterDC complex will mean that Megabus will relocate to a lot at North Capitol and K Street, while Boltbus will move to a space at New Jersey Avenue and F Street NW.
A Shuttle for the Diamond of the District?
With the District getting closer and closer to again featuring streetcars as an operational part of the city's transportation network, other areas slated to take part in the streetcar renaissance are getting anxious about what they're supposed to do in the meantime to keep the momentum going.
Megabus To Expand D.C.-Philadelphia Service
According to a report in the Washington Post, intercity bus company Megabus will be upping the number of trips it offers between Washington and Philadelphia at the end of March. Megabus will begin offering 13 daily trips between the two cities between Thursday and Monday starting on March 31; currently, Megabus has eight daily trips on those days. Consider it great news for the 45 percent of you who prefer to take the bus instead of the train.
Rail or Bus: Which Do You Prefer?
We like to take trips here at DCist. Usually, we find ourselves shuttling between destinations where we could either use Amtrak or an intercity bus service, like BoltBus or Megabus. So it was with great interest when we noticed City Paper editor Mike Madden and H Street advocate Margaret Holwell arguing about which mode of transportation was better this morning.
Streets To Close For Sunday's Chinese New Year Parade
Several streets will close in and around Chinatown on Sunday for the annual Chinese New Year Festival and Parade. The parade itself will run from approximately 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., while the Festival -- including the setting off of a Giant Firecracker at 3:45 p.m. -- runs all afternoon.
Metrobus Service To Be Suspended At 9:30 p.m. Tonight
Metro has just announced that all Metrobus service in Maryland, Virginia and the District will be suspended at 9:30 p.m. tonight due to deteriorating road conditions. Bus drivers will complete the routes they are on at that time, and then return to their garages. According to WMATA, regional bus services including Alexandria’s DASH, Arlington’s ART, Fairfax Connector, DC Circulator, PRTC, Fairfax City CUE, and Montgomery County’s RIDE ON will be halting service at 9 p.m. WMATA says that they "will be monitoring road conditions constantly with an eye toward resuming service on Thursday morning."
State of the Union Metrobus Detours Announced
Earlier this morning, we filled you in regarding the road closures near the Capitol during this evening's State of the Union, but noted that Metro had yet to announce the details on bus detours for the routes that wind around the area. The transit agency released those updates late this morning -- check the PDF below for specific detours on the 32, 34, 36 and 96 routes.
Ten Injured After Metrobus Accident In Congress Heights

ABC7 reports that the crash involved an A46 Metrobus which was heading in the direction of the Congress Heights Metro station. The bus reportedly collided with a Jeep and another car. After the accident, ten people complained of various injuries, but none were life-threatening.
H Street NE Shuttle Service To Cease After December 31
Anyone who frequents the H Street NE corridor will tell you that the popular H Street Shuttle has made life much easier since its arrival in 2009. The shuttle serves as a compliment to the X2 Metrobus, connects multiple wards and, perhaps most importantly, is a boon for businesses around a corridor which has been hampered by construction for the better part of the last couple of years. But the shuttle will soon be a luxury of the past: service will cease after December 31.
His Paper-Serving Uniform Must Have Been In The Wash
So here's a fun one: the Washington Times reports that WMATA had been giving free transit, holiday pay and uniform-cleaning allowances to an unidentified employee who had been on extended medical leave for 13 years, but never had his Metro identification card voided. Of course, the way that Metro figured it out was priceless: the man was wearing his bus driver uniform when he visited the WMATA general counsel offices to serve a receptionist with court papers, which he was doing to make money on the side. Whoops. Due to the shocking realization that at least one of their employees might not be obeying the honor code, WMATA said that they have "reviewed and updated the records of employees on extended medical leave."
More Metrobus Route Alterations Begin December 19
This afternoon, WMATA announced another round of bus route "enhancements" for the District, Maryland and Virginia which will go into effect on December 19. The most prominent upgrade of the enhancement program is the introduction of the X9, an express, limited-stop route which will operate between the Capitol Heights Metro station and the intersection of 13th and H Streets NW.
Photo Booth: Going Home
While we realize that many of you will be enjoying the empty streets of D.C. this weekend, for many Washingtonians, it's time to get on the road, the tracks or the air and make the annual late November pilgrimage. It inspired us to highlight a cross-section of Flickr pool's tremendous collection of photographs capturing the experience of traveling in and around the District.
How To Get To D.C.'s Airports If You Don't Have A Car
There has been a lot of debate about airport security over the last few weeks. But as any holiday traveler knows, actually getting to the airport can be just as much of a hassle as any full body scan -- especially if you don't have a car, a friend with a car that owes you a favor or a bunch of cash to drop on a cab ride. Here are some methods that will (eventually) get you where you need to go.
