(Good) Radio Free D.C.
Driving down I-81 in central Virginia earlier this year, we heard something we haven't heard in awhile: a radio station playing good music. This, and the announcement of "eco-station" 94.7 the Globe got us thinking: why doesn't D.C. have a good independent music station? Other big cities have great listener-supported music stations, like KEXP in Seattle and WFMU in New York, and many other cities have decent student-run college stations. But D.C. has neither. About...
Time for a Pay Raise?
How much is public service in the District worth? This Tuesday the D.C. Council might tell us. In its last legislative session of the year, the council will be debating a number of measures and proposals, one that would provide funds for the trasitions of mayor-elect Adrian Fenty and council chair-elect Vincent Gray. But more than just provide them with the money needed to prep their teams for next January's handover of power, the legislation...
United to Take On Real Madrid -- in Seattle
After soundly thrashing Celtic FC in a friendly two weeks ago, MLS-leading DC United will take on another international power, only this time it's the mighty Real Madrid. Due to scheduling conflicts at the local stadiums and Real's already booked West Coast tour, this friendly will be played in Seattle at Qwest Field on August 9th at 11 p.m. ET. We here at DCist are bummed that we won't be able to watch this...

Adding further cred to the notion that pop music is respectable as long as it's from another country, the wildly popular duo Puffy AmiYumi bring their unforgettable show to the 9:30 Club tonight, with opener Adam Richman. 6 p.m., $20 TUESDAY: >> Because we love A Smokey Mountain Christmas, because the original version is always better, and because there's nothing cooler...
Urine for a Treat at Signature Theatre
. And sure, it has what Sally calls an "awful title" and is, after all, about a town where times have gotten so tough, people have to pay in order to pee. But D.C. theater lovers should certainly beg to differ with young Sally's assessment; Signature's current production is an uproarious treat.
Ask DCist: Suits to Suit You
Ahh, the suit dilemma. Personally, in D.C., we don't know how you guys do it. We're wearing the lightest skirts and tank tops we can get away with (that are still conservative enough not to get sent an email about improper dressing) and we're roasting every day. The thought of wearing a suit on a 100+ degree day just about kills us. But D.C. is D.C., and suits are a necessary part of the job. So, onwards!
Morning Roundup
Mayor Wants Action on Banning Dangerous Trains: The District's city council and Mayor Anthony Williams are considering pushing through emergency legislation that would ban trains carrying hazardous materials through the city via a rail line that passes dangerously close to the Capitol and the National Mall. The Post reports that although the city wants the White House to take immediate action on this matter, if the city chooses to be aggressive on this, Ward 3 Councilmember Kathy Patterson notes that the rail and chemical industry would probably seek an injunction.
Morning Roundup
Budget Passed: D.C. Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton tells the Post that she appreciates the House and Senate for passing D.C.'s 2005 budget without any new social riders. But D.C. officials tell the Post that a prohibition on District tax dollars being used for abortions for low-income women remains in place.
