Food Network Won't Let Teddy Win

Teddy Folkman, D.C.’s latest representative on the reality food television circuit, was sent home from The Next Food Network Star in last night’s episode. It was the fourth episode of the season—he outlasted three of the ten fellow contestants, but didn’t make it to cook in Rachel Ray’s studio in episode 5. The ouster wasn’t a product of poor cooking, though we weren’t too thrilled with much of his offerings from his relaunched Capitol Lounge menu. In fact, his haute DLT sandwich (duck, lettuce, and tomato) won praises from the show’s judges in last night’s elimination challenge.

Capitol Lounge, fixture of the Capitol Hill bar scene, launched a revamped, Teddy Folkman-created menu over the weekend. Folkman, who can be seen on TV competing to be The Next Food Network Star, accepted the Executive Chef role at the Lounge after helping owner Joe Englert in launching H Street Country Club’s Mexican-themed menu. Their goal is to “raise the bar,” providing gourmet bar food to the staffers and Hill denizens that frequent Pennsylvania Avenue.

Months after a fire gutted the interior of Eastern Market's South Hall and almost destroyed the District landmark, vendors will be back in business tomorrow in a temporary structure built across the street. The structure, which looks like a big white tent, cost $1.5 million and will be used while $25 million in repairs are completed on the South Hall, a process that could take up to two years. We're happy to see things slowly...

As we mentioned briefly yesterday, the second fire in two years at Capitol Lounge has been found to have resulted from the same reason as the first: a cigarette, which was left burning in a trash can behind the building. Last week's fire caused about $100,000 of damage to the Lounge as well as the Trover Gift Shop next door. Now The Examiner reports that D.C. Fire Chief Dennis Rubin is calling for a new...

Courtney Mabeus over at The Examiner says that Capitol Lounge should reopen today after getting the go ahead from health inspectors. The bar suffered its second fire in two years on Wednesday, but damage this time, estimated at about $15,000, looks to have been largely limited to the back patio. The Trover Gift Shop on the 200 block of Pennsylvania Ave. SE was also damaged in the blaze, which started in a dumpster behind the...

The 200 Block to 400 Block of Pennsylvania Avenue., SE has been closed since about 8 a.m. due to the two-alarm fire at Capitol Lounge. That's right, the same Capitol Lounge that burned almost completely to the ground just about exactly two years ago. Talk about bad luck.

We pretty relentlessly mock lists that involve listing the best of ________ (location, dining establishment, watering hole, venue) in the District. Be it a national publication or even our own Washington Post, sometimes it seems that the rankings reflect what's easiest rather than what's actually best. After all, is Starbucks really the best Washington has to offer by way of coffee? So when we saw that Esquire had published a list of the best bars...

We promise you, Washington, we’ll let go of this soon. Very soon. By November 7th at the latest. Yesterday, George Allen placed a telephone call to S.R. Sidarth to apologize yet again for the slip of the tongue that has sent his campaign into a tailspin. Allen’s critics remain unimpressed, including the 50 protesters that greeted President Bush’s arrival at an Allen fundraiser yesterday with signs that included, "Hey, George, macaca is a bad word."...

We're sorry for the unscheduled hiatus of the Weekly Feed last week. We would like to take responsibility for it, truly, but instead we must give an excuse. You see, the Feed was nowhere to be found when the curtain went up. It turns out it went on a weeklong bender with Eating In. They tried to take a road trip to Las Vegas, but turned around in Chillicothe when they ran out of ether...

...this place is something I love too dearly not to mend, fix up and reintroduce to the Hill. I really appreciate all the generous offers I have had from people all over town to help employees, to paint, to get the word out when I reopen, etc. It may only be bricks and mortar but the place has a soul and we will not let it die.
Well, today could be the day that the Capitol Lounge comes back to life. According to the DC Urban Family, the lounge will re-open today at 4 p.m. Then again, these rumors have circulated before, and the Going Out Gurus couldn't confirm nor deny their validity in their online chat today at the Post.

August's last weekend has come and gone. We hope you spent it well. We know we did, and we didn't even get to everything we had planned. The photo was snapped by Melissa during Saturday's rain showers. Nothing compared to Category 5 Katrina bearing down on New Orleans as we type. Capital Weather is keeping everyone updated. If you have friends or family in Katrina's path, please encourage them to stay safe and evacuate. This...

As we reported earlier today the Pennsylvania Avenue bar Capitol Lounge suffered a severe fire late last night. The news caused a flurry of emails as members of the Capitol Hill community swapped photos and the news. A DCist reader and self-admitted frequent visitor to the bar has sent us dozens of exclusive photos taken earlier today, including a number of the fire damage to the bar's decorations. The images above are details from two: one photo of a Marion Barry campaign poster which our tipster noted seems to be unscathed, and another of a Reagan - Bush campaign sign melted by the extreme heat. Our source says that according to information he received from employees there's no evidence it was anything except an accident - probably caused by a cigarette.

DCist is hearing unsubstantiated reports Capitol Hill institution the Capitol Lounge suffered from a serious fire last night. We are currently attempting to get a hold of the D.C. Fire Department for confirmation, and will alert DCist readers with the full story when it becomes available. If readers have further information, please leave them in the comments. UPDATE: Thanks to the commenters, who note that NBC4 is confirming the fire. The station reports that the...

In the interest of introducing new D.C. residents to the finest in District drinking, and old residents to spots they may not have heard of, DCist introduces our latest feature, Coalition of the Swilling.

When Executive Chef Drew Trautmann and proprietors Eli Hengst and Jared Rager (of Mendocino in Georgetown) announced that they were opening a restaurant where Il Raddichio used to be, Capitol Hill food watchers were understandably excited. On a block inhabited by a Burrito Brothers, the Capitol Lounge, and formerly a Chesapeake Bagel Bakery, the new American cuisine of the sort served at Mendocino was welcome change. The Hill has seen a few good new...

Alert DCist readers pointed us to the news that the Market Lunch, a staple of Eastern Market, has ceased weekend breakfast service. No reason other than possible fatigue has been cited.

Let the fun begin.
