Perhaps the loudest were about Mayor Vince Gray, who they claimed was refusing to take a meeting with them regarding the theater's funding situation.
Lincoln Theatre Could Close At End of Year Without Funding
Representatives from the Lincoln Theatre's board of directors made their case in front of the historic theater this afternoon: without a $500,000 boost in operational funds from the city at the beginning of the 2012 fiscal year, they would likely be forced to close at the end of the year.

O Street Giant To Close Sept. 8, Chain To Offer Shuttle
It's been no secret that, at some point, the Giant supermarket at 1414 8th Street NW in Shaw would close -- after all, it's difficult to build a new development which features a brand new, 35,000-square-foot supermarket with an old one standing in the way. Today, the chain confirmed that the grocery would close on September 8 at 6 p.m.

T Street Post Office: Closing Soon?
The United States Postal Service has been looking for ways to cut back on costs for, well, years now. But one of the biggest drains on USPS' yearly budget is their brick-and-mortar postal offices, which, with massive cuts in labor and a movement to online services, are often understaffed and underutilized. The Wall Street Journal reported earlier this week that the USPS was looking to move on closing thousands of offices -- and Prince of Petworth publishes an email from a reader who overheard that the post office at 14th and T Streets would be "closing in a few months."

Farmers Market Roundup: Closing Time

Social Co-Owner Calls Closing "Temporary"
To update a story which we started following yesterday afternoon: Columbia Heights restaurant Social, which closed its doors yesterday "due to an unexpected set of circumstances," has now called the closing "temporary." According to its Twitter account, the restaurant will be "closed temporarily" to "address organizational changes." "We look forward to serving our patrons and the community again soon," noted the tweet. When we asked Social co-owner AJ Guy about why the restaurant needed to close to address the issues, Guy called it "a temporary adjustment that we are working through," and added that he did not "expect the closing to be long term." Guy refused to elaborate on any additional details.

Secret Safeway To Close On August 7
We received a tip this morning that the Secret Safeway at located at 1800 20th Street NW -- also known as the "Town House" Safeway -- will be closing its doors on August 7. We can now confirm that the store will indeed be shutting its doors on that date, after a manager at the store affirmed the date. The store, tucked away and with minimal signage, was an experiment by the Safeway chain in the 70s to branch into smaller groceries which would appeal to urban apartment dwellers. Of course, there's no shortage of Safeways in the area: the closest one is just down the street at 1701 Corcoran Street NW. But from all accounts, the Secret Safeway, though seemingly pricier than regular Safeways, was a serviceable option for neighborhood residents -- we're sure that there's at least a few of you that will be sorry to see it go.
As it Readies to Close, Lambda Rising Gets Egged
The owner of pioneering D.C. gay and lesbian bookstore Lambda Rising, Deacon Maccubbin, announced his impending retirement late last year. Since then, messages on the store's Facebook page have estimated a final closing date of Jan. 17, just a couple weeks from now, and 35 years since it first opened. With emotions running high, it's not difficult to understand why employees overseeing the final clearance push weren't thrilled to discover Wednesday that the Connecticut Ave. storefront had been egged overnight.
Metro Eases Up On Early Closing Idea, At Least For Now
Many transit-types are plenty concerned about the impending budgetary cuts at Metro -- a struggle afflicting numerous other metropolitan transit agencies, despite surging ridership. But with the leadership of WMATA considering the idea that Metro could make up deficits by cutting rail service off at 10 p.m. on weekdays, it's sure to hit a nerve with casual, infrequent riders, as well as those of us who usually have our eyes on Metro's budget.
