Mayor Vince Gray and D.C. Schools Chancellor Kaya Henderson said today that they may close more schools in the upcoming year.
Gray, Henderson Look to Close More D.C. Public Schools
Six Red Line Metro Stations To Close Over Weekend
Major track work will take place along a segment of the Red Line this weekend, so if you happen to live near any station from Rhode Island Avenue to Glenmont, you might want to have alternative means of transportation.
Holiday Over: Metro to Close Six Stations This Weekend
Did you enjoy that weekend off from Metro station closures, Washington? Don't get too cozy. This weekend, WMATA is upping the ante, closing six Red Line stations beginning on Friday night at 10 p.m.
Your Rendezvous With Siri Will Have To Wait
Were you thinking about taking a late lunch this afternoon and swinging by one of the Apple Stores in Georgetown, Pentagon City, Clarendon or Bethesda to pick up the phone you can talk to? Tough luck.
Dupont Circle Metro Entrance to Close For Escalator Repairs
We hope you're fond of that Walt Whitman quote inscribed along the north entrance of the Dupont Circle Metro station -- because you'll be seeing a lot more of it, starting early next year.
D.C. Roads To Close For Obama Speech Tonight
President Barack Obama will be delivering an address on jobs to a joint (well, almost) session of Congress. And you know what that means for us locals -- road closures!
Major Red Line Work To Close Five Stations This Weekend
Stay strong, Red Line riders -- this weekend, five stations along the line will close for scheduled repairs to rails, cables, escalators and elevators.
Several D.C. Agencies Closed Due To Power Outages
Several city agency offices are closed today due to the power outages around the city's Northeast quadrant.
Blue/Orange Line Service To Be Affected Over Memorial Day Weekend
It's actually been a relatively quiet couple of weeks on the Metro maintenance front -- for example, this upcoming weekend's slate is about as non-intrusive as Metro weekend maintenance gets these days -- but it's really just the calm before the next big Orange and Blue Line storm, which will arrive over Memorial Day weekend.
Elephant March Returns This Afternoon
The Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey touring circus finds its way back to the Verizon Center on Thursday (this year's theme: Barnum's Funundrum), so it's once again time for the annual Elephant Walk. The pachyderm march through the streets of the District will begin this afternoon at 2:00 p.m. -- to make sure you get a chance to gawk at the trunked ones, you can call 1-866-683-3670 or follow @DCElephantWalk on Twitter. (Yes, there's an elephant walk hotline.)
Metro To Close Five Orange Line Stations From March 4-6
It isn't part of the transit agency's Year of Three-Day Weekend Closures, but it'll still be a real pain for many local residents: Metro announced this morning that service between Stadium-Armory and New Carrollton on the Orange Line and between Stadium-Armory and Benning Road on the Blue Line will be shut down during the first weekend in March.
What To Expect From Metro During Presidents Day Weekend
We've been talking quite a bit about other WMATA-related stories of late, but we wanted to make sure that you haven't forgotten about Metro's Year of Three-Day Weekend Closures, the next round of which is slated for this upcoming weekend. Both the Federal Triangle and Smithsonian stations will be closed for the entirety of Presidents Day weekend, between 10 p.m. on February 18 and closing on February 21.
Watch As The Beltway Turns Into A Big, Chilly Pool
Check out this amazing piece of video which really documents the enormity of the 54-inch water main break which shut down a large section of the Capital Beltway this morning. Not only did the rushing water cause serious damage and grind traffic to a halt for hours this morning, but the break has forced Andrews Air Force Base into "reduced operations," and led to the closure of several area schools and the offices of the U.S. Census Bureau in Suitland.
All D.C. Public Libraries Will Be Closed This Friday
The D.C. Public Library announced today that all of the city's public libraries will be closed this Friday, December 3, as DCPL holds an agency-wide staff training day. If you have borrowed materials due back to your local branch on Friday, DCPL says you can hang on to them for one extra day without penalty. All libraries will resume regular operating hours on Saturday, December 4.
Metro This Weekend: Beware The Orange and Blue Lines
Is everyone ready for another weekend of pure Metro frustration? (After all, it's been so long since the last one!) Well, get ready: this weekend's maintenance schedule is pretty wicked. As a reminder, Metro's online TripPlanner doesn't feature any of this information, so you should check out this webpage before you head out this weekend.
Metro Columbus Day Closures Conflict With World Bank Annual Meeting
When WMATA announced yesterday that it would close Farragut West and McPherson Square and shut down Blue and Orange line service at Metro Center over the entire Columbus Day weekend, we thought it would be messy. It's arguably the busiest section of the system. There's sports games, concerts, and a lot more people in town that weekend who will want to get around. Plus, there are a large number of Washingtonians who work in offices in the center of town who just don't take Columbus Day off and would normally use Metro to get into and home from work on Monday. Oh, right, and the World Bank's annual meeting. Oops.
Farragut West, McPherson Square To Close Over Columbus Day Weekend
Did you enjoy that Labor Day Red Line shutdown? Well, that was so successful, WMATA is back at it again. Over the Columbus Day weekend -- between 10 p.m. on Friday, October 8 until closing on Monday, October 11 -- both the Farragut West and McPherson Square Metrorail stations will be closed and there will not be any Blue or Orange Line service at Metro Center. The closures will be in place so that WMATA can perform another massive, National Transportation Safety Board-recommended maintenance project: replacing four track switches which comprise the rail interlocking at McPherson Square. Several other smaller projects are also being planned so as to get the most out of the downtime.
Five Red Line Stations To Close Over Labor Day Weekend
WMATA announced today that five Red Line Metrorail stations -- Takoma, Silver Spring, Forest Glen, Wheaton and Glenmont -- will be closed during the entire Labor Day weekend. It will be the largest maintenance shutdown in Metro's 34-year history.
Road Closures for St. Patrick's Day Festivities Tomorrow
Fair public notice to those whose idea of St. Patrick's Day fun is less drinking Guinness until you pass out on the couch and more watching others physically exert themselves through a rainstorm: Sunday's St. Patrick's Day 8K Race will be sure to tickle your fancy. Many a runner will wind their way down some heavily-trafficked roads between 9 a.m. and noon, so the District is doing it's usual "close down most of the routes along the Mall, making crossing into or out of Virginia by car a real pain in the ass" routine.
Metro Will Cease Bus, Above Ground Rail Service At 1 p.m. Today
"[W]e are fast-reaching the point where we risk trains becoming stranded on snow-covered tracks," said Metro General Manager John Catoe in a statement released moments ago. All underground stations will remain open until 3 a.m. tonight, as usual.
Transit Today: Expect Wide Delays and Reduced Service
Metrorail and Metrobus are experiencing heavy delays due to the weather, though that was kind of a no-brainer. Metrorail is currently running on 10 to 12 minute intervals on all lines, while Metrobus is only running service on snow emergency routes. We have heard of isolated cases of bus drivers braving other roads as long as they are plowed well enough, but those cases should dwindle as conditions continue to worsen.
Smithsonian Closed Today and Tomorrow
So much for waiting out this blizzard while browsing framed masterpieces in a tourist-free setting. According to a news blast on its website, all Smithsonian museums and the National Zoo will be closed to the public today and tomorrow due to the weather. It's the first time since 1996 that the Institution has closed all its museums in one fell swoop. We're also told that the National Geographic Museum -- including the popular Terra Cotta Warriors exhibit -- is closed today. On the plus side, the large quantities of snow allows one to attempt a recreation of some of Calvin's finest winter-weather pieces.
Snow Emergency in Effect Starting at 7 a.m.
The snOMG event of '09 is soon to begin. We're already hearing from people with early morning flights booked that they have been canceled. In the District, all DMV, DPR and public library facilities will be closed on Saturday, and Mayor Fenty has set a formal Snow Emergency starting at 7 a.m. -- that means you must move your car from any designated snow emergency route before then, or it will be towed. You can download a map or a list of all snow emergency routes here. And if your car does get towed, you should call 202-541-6083 to find out where it is.
Scientology Event Closes Section of 16th Street
The Church of Scientology Religious Trust's building at 16th and P Streets NW is the site of a barricaded celebration of some sort today -- one which is blocking a sizable section of one of the District's major arteries. (Obviously, I wasn't invited behind the curtain. I mean, you should have seen my last audit: whew!) Police are out in full force around the humongous 50,000-square foot building, and security is tight -- a ten-foot tall white temporary barricade is blocking off 16th Street; there are huge draping banners reading "SCIENTOLOGY" and "DIANETICS", though, in case those walking by on their Saturday jaunts to the 14th and P retail corridor were wondering what the hell was going on with this big white thing in the middle of the street.
Don't Forget This Weekend's Metro Mess
A friendly Friday afternoon reminder from your pals here at DCist about this weekend's Metrorail closures along the Green and Yellow lines. Don't forget that the Waterfront-SEU and Archives-Navy Mem’l-Penn Quarter stations will be closed completely, along with Green Line service at L’Enfant Plaza, starting at 10:30 p.m. tonight and lasting through closing on Monday, Oct. 12.
Traffic Closures on H and U Streets Today
Due to celebrations on H Street NE and U Streets NW, there will be several roads near major intersections which will be closed to cars today. The Greater U Street Parade and Festival kicked off at 11 this morning: the parade route winds from 10th to 13th Streets, 13th Street from U to V Streets, and then on V Street from 13th to 14th Street -- the latter of which will be closed to traffic until 6 p.m., after its official renaming to "Langston Hughes Way" at noon by Ward 1 Councilman Jim Graham. H Street NE, meanwhile, will be closed to traffic between 10th and 14th Streets NE for the 2009 H Street Festival until 9 p.m.
Red Line Service Stopped Between Van Ness-UDC and Dupont Circle
Red Line service has been temporarily suspended between the Van Ness-UDC and Dupont Circle stations from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. Metro announced the closure less than an hour ago, explaining that it was necessary while they secure a loose communications cable hanging from the tunnel ceiling between the Woodley Park-Zoo/Adams Morgan and Dupont Circle stations. Free shuttle buses are operating between Van Ness-UDC and Dupont Circle during this time. The loose cable was discovered during rush hour this morning, and Metro says Red Line trains have been at reduced speeds in the area since then.
Starbucks Closures Won't Affect D.C. Very Much
In case you missed the list of Starbucks that will be closing in the D.C. metro area, WTOP has the whole list up. Only one out of the 600 stores that will close nationally is in the District -- at 2101 L St. NW. Given that there are also Starbucks locations at 2109 M Street NW, 2175 K Street NW, and 2400 M Street NW, we doubt anyone will be too inconvenienced by the change.
