Welcome to Friday, Washington ... and the last day of August, and the beginning of your holiday weekend, and more or less the end of the summer? This particular date, as you prepare for your weekend barbecues and last-minute getaways, is always a bit of a depressing occasion. It may not be the de jure end of the summer, but it's certainly the de facto one. To cheer you up about the imminent demise...

Morning Roundup: Animal Criminality Edition
Good morning, Washington. Just one more day! By tomorrow we'll be free of this dreary, occasionally drizzly mess — or so CapitalWeather assures us. Here's hoping they're right. Although the cooler temperatures have been pleasant, we've had enough of this gray mid-winter preview. MPD Officers' Trial Begins: The Post reports on the start of Milagros Morales' and Erick Brown's trial. The two police detectives are accused of manipulating witnesses into implicating Jerome Jones in the...
Morning Roundup: An Uneasy Peace Edition
Good morning, Washington. An estimated 10,000 people attended the dedication Sunday of the official memorial for the 32 victims killed at Virginia Tech on April 16. Students at the university, about four hours outside D.C., begin classes for the fall semester today. On the same day as the dedication, about 23 Virginia Tech students living in an off-campus apartment building were taken to hospitals after showing signs of carbon monoxide poisoning. Several of the...
Morning Roundup: Needles for Everyone Edition
Good morning, Washington. Did you stay up late arguing the finer points of last night's Democratic presidential debate at Howard University? Or were you just hoping to get a table at Busboys and Poets but unable to shove your way through the crowd? Shaw and the U Street corridor were overrun with Democratic political operatives last night ... which really probably isn't any different than any other night. But forget about the substance of the...
Bad Water for H20?
The story usually follows the same line -- a night club is the scene of a violent incident, the District responds by temporarily shutting it down and it invariably loses its liquor license and goes out of business. It happened at Club U, at Kili's Kafe and at Club 1919. And after a fatal shooting over the weekend at H20, the swanky waterfront club may be next. One man was shot and killed in an...
Jim Graham's Underage Club Crusade
Councilmember Jim Graham (D-Ward 1) is well known for being thoughtful, energetic, and responsive to the needs of his constitutents. He lords over the District's most diverse and vibrant ward, participating in discussions on everything from transportation to crime to consumer and regulatory affairs. It was no surprise, then, that Graham dove headfirst into last Saturday's tragic killing of 17-year-old Taleshia Ford at Club 1919. He quickly informed constituents of the night's events, pushed Police...
Morning Roundup: Police and Pedestrians Edition
We've all seen the signs around the District -- by city law, pedestrians in crosswalks without crossing signals have the right of way. But will we ever get caught zooming through intersections while pedestrians try to cross? According to the Post, we just might. Provoked by the 10 pedestrian deaths so far this year, police have started going undercover to enforce the District's pedestrian laws, often to the chagrin of city drivers oblivious to...
Morning Roundup: Butterstick's Drawing Power Edition
These days, if you haven't seen Butterstick in the flesh, well, you may as well not even be alive. Ever since the District's favorite new celebrity was born just over six months ago, residents from across the region have watched as Butterstick grew from grotesque rat-looking thing to the mound of cuteness we see today. And ever since the National Zoo started handing out free tickets to see the 'stick, attendance at the Woodley Park site has doubled, according to NBC 4. Of course, just a trickle of that stream of visitors has expressed any interest in those other animals, which, from what we hear, are just itching for the day that Butterstick gets sent back to China. How cute will that precious little panda be then?

Morning Roundup: Dangerous Metro Edition
We always thought Metro was safe. Really safe. We may have been wrong. Two recent incidents on Metrorail have area commuters questioning Metro's ability to respond to or prevent criminal activity, or, more seriously, terrorist attacks, notes NBC 4. In one case, a woman was groped by a man, and in another, a woman had her iPod and SmartTrip card stolen by a group of teenage girls. Both incidents occurred on the Red Line,...
Club U's Alcohol License Revoked
Half a dozen stabbings, shootings, and assaults later, the District's Alcoholic Beverage Control Board has definitively revoked Club U's alcohol license. Club U, the troubled Go-Go hotspot located inside the city-owned Franklin D. Reeves Municipal Center at the intersection of 14th and U streets NW, seen at right, was the location of a murder earlier this year, and had recently come under scrutiny by the D.C. Office of the Attorney General for recurring episodes of violence.
Morning Roundup: Terror From the Skies Edition
Those who think they might have been bitten by a bat should wash the wound and immediately seek medical attention. A vaccine exists, but the disease is typically deadly if left untreated.
A Full Plate for the Alcohol Control Board
We've been following the drama over the liquor license for Club U for quite some time now, but there are of course numerous other establishments that must deal with the Alcohol Control Board in one way or another. The ABC has a full plate today. Much of it is just normal procedural stuff, but then there are some other interesting items.
Morning Roundup: Who's the Tin Man Edition?
Good morning Washington, the good weather is continuing, according to Capital Weather. This photo, by Matthew Bradley posted in DCist Photos via Flickr, shows somebody repairing a security camera at the National Archives.
Morning Roundup: Nationals Opener Edition
This photo of street art near Shaw was taken by Georgetown freshman Matt Kallman. Today will be mostly sunny with highs around 60.
Stabbings at Bhangra Blowout
Considering the shocking violence at this weekend's Bhangra Blowout, it's safe to say that future such events, especially those held at federal buildings involving heavy drinking, will be placed under intense scrutiny.
Morning Roundup: No Anthrax Edition
Today will be mostly cloudy with highs in the 50s. The blogger meetup is tonight. This photo by Matt Billings is of the U.S. Capitol.
Club U May Be Closed For Good
The future prospects of Club U, the U Street Go-Go club which has been closed since authorities pulled their liquor license in February after a murder occurred there, appears dim. The D.C. Alcoholic Beverage Control Board voted yesterday to suspend the club's liquor license until hearings about whether they should permanently revoke the license in April.
Morning Roundup: Rolling in Dough Edition
Good morning, Washington. We start today with this photo of a line of newspaper distribution boxes from a new photoblog we've come across, Digital Obscura.
Morning Roundup: No Snow Edition
Today will be mostly cloudy with highs around 40 and a chance of snow showers. The photo is by John W. via Flickr. Snow Storm Falls Short Predictions: The area papers noted yesterday's storm fell short predictions, but closed schools in the area, to the frustration of parents. WTOP notes the snowfall set a record at Dulles Airport. Indian Lobbying Up: The Examiner reports that lobbying expenditures by Native American tribes is up recently. They...

Presidents Day Weekend Update
We hope you're enjoying your Presidents Day weekend, especially if you have Monday off from work. Although this photo taken outside the Adams Morgan McDonalds was posted on photogene's photoblog on Valentine's Day, we thought it works for this weekend as well since we witnessed a fight spill from the sidewalk to inside the McDonald's at 18th Street and Columbia Road and then back outside again. The Metropolitan Police officers breaking up the scuffle sure seemed pissed off. "Those were the same guys as before!"
Morning Roundup: Embattled 'Club U' Edition
This photo of Reagan National Airport was taken by blogger John Windmueller at a recent Washington Photo Safari outing. Today will be partly cloudy with highs in the upper 60s. Crackdown at Club U: After a murder last weekend near the popular U Street go-go club, authorities have pulled the club's liquor license. The Post reports on the developments and some of the crimes critics say are connected to the club, including 3 homicides since...
Murder at Club U
Last night, someone was murdered in the lobby of the Reeves Center, a District municipal building at the intersection of 14th and U streets NW. According to an e-mail posted on the U Street News listserv by Ward 1 Councilmember Jim Graham: Around 3 AM, in entranceway approach to the Club, a person was stabbed to death with a "sharp object" following an argument that began in the Club U with another person. This is...
U Street Clubs Battle NIMBYism
U Street NIMBYs beware! In a classic "take out the trash" move, the D.C. Office of Attorney General announced that it had settled a dispute with the managers of Club U, the go-go club operating out of the Reeves Municipal Center (at right) at U and 14th streets NW. Despite concerns from neighborhood residents, including Ward 1 Councilmember Jim Graham, about violence and suspicious activities going on in and around the club, Club U will...
