Tourist Sues Starbucks After Daughter Found Camera In Bathroom

Starbucks is being sued in D.C. Superior Court -- but it has nothing to do with its expensive, burnt tasting coffee. The Weekly Feed: Overcaffeinated Edition

The Weekly Feed: Overcaffeinated Edition

Since the tea taxes of the 18th century, America has always been a country of coffee drinkers. The ubiquity of Starbucks brought about the rise of "gourmet" coffee, and recently, many people have been fixated on single origin, fair trade beans that are brewed in the latest multi-thousand dollar machine or fancy gizmo from Japan. But in the end, it's not the technology that makes the coffee. It's careful attention to the beans used, and how they're roasted. more ›

Mixed Messages on Metro: Modified!

Mixed Messages on Metro: Modified!

Remember that advertisement for Green Mountain Coffee inside Metro stations which read "I realized the only fuel I need on the metro is a great cup of coffee"? Looks like the company realized the error of its ways and altered the text to state "I realized there's nothing better after a long commute than a great cup of coffee." Kudos, Green Mountain Coffee -- not only does the new copy adhere to the rule about not drinking on the Metro, it also reminds us that taking Metro most of the time is an incredibly laborious undertaking. Mixed Messages From Metro

Mixed Messages From Metro

During our discussion with Metro General Manager/Chief Executive Officer Richard Sarles on Tuesday night, the new permanent boss noted that one of the two biggest complaints he got from riders wasn't about high fares, bag searches or reliability issues -- it was refuse, like coffee cups, being left inside trains and stations. Sarles was quick to point out that Metro customers should do their part to try and curb such behavior. more ›

The Late Afternoon 14th Street Business Report

Plenty of exciting news for those who live and play around the 14th Street corridor this afternoon. First, Peregrine Espresso announced on its blog that they have signed a lease on the storefront at 1718 14th Street NW. It'll be months before Peregrine opens up shop there, but caffeine fiends will certainly be jumping for joy at yet another high quality coffee joint in the area. Additionally, Chris Richards reports in the Post's Click Track blog that the Clyde's Restaurant Group has plans to open a 15,000-square-foot nightclub in the enormous space they are taking over from Borders at 14th and F Streets NW. The space will be a "'more adult' music club with a general focus on singer-songwriters" and book live acts. more ›

Former Murky Coffee owner Nick Cho revealed on Don Rockwell this morning that he will be opening his new coffee shop, Chinatown Coffee Company, sometime in June. Cho also said that Wrecking Ball Coffee roasting company, which DCist previously reported would go into the space at 5th and H Streets NW, is actually "a separate venture." New Coffee Shop Headed to 14th Street

New Coffee Shop Headed to 14th Street

The 14th and U Street NW corridors have experienced a number of setbacks in the locally-owned coffee shop department over the last couple of years. First was the end of Sparky's (making way for the wildly popular Cork). Then it was the shuttering and now presumed death of 14U, despite rumors that it would reinvent itself as a retail/cafe hybrid. Cafe Collage entered the scene, but since then Love Cafe has sharply reduced its hours, no longer serving coffee in the early morning hours (it's been opening at 11 a.m. for a couple months). And if wireless internet is important to you, as I noted on Sunday, Mocha Hut has become markedly inconsistent in that area. more ›

How 'Bout a Nice Cuppa Soy Sauce?

How 'Bout a Nice Cuppa Soy Sauce?

Plenty of people put soy milk in their coffee, but soy sauce? John Ulaszek, who also goes by the DCist Flickr contributor pseudonym F1.4, was eating breakfast at what he describes as one of his favorite restaurants in Northern Virginia over the weekend, when he had an experience that makes us a little queasy

The ever attentive waiter noticed my empty cup and promptly topped me off – by now I was rockin the caffeine, the birds were chirping, the sun was smiling, so I gulped down another mouthful and……and something is really wrong here – what the hell did I just drink – It looks like coffee, but I don’t think it is, as a matter of fact it tasted like hot Soy Sauce?! Suddenly I wasn’t sure if I just drank coffee, soy sauce, or maybe some cleaning chemical ended up in the coffee. I am almost instantly nauseous, probably not from what I drank, but my mind and body running in overdrive trying to figure out if I should hurl, because whatever I just drank sure as hell wasn’t coffee. more ›

Starbucks Closures Won't Affect D.C. Very Much

Starbucks Closures Won't Affect D.C. Very Much

In case you missed the list of Starbucks that will be closing in the D.C. metro area, WTOP has the whole list up. Only one out of the 600 stores that will close nationally is in the District -- at 2101 L St. NW. Given that there are also Starbucks locations at 2109 M Street NW, 2175 K Street NW, and 2400 M Street NW, we doubt anyone will be too inconvenienced by the change. more ›

Murky Coffee's Capitol Hill Location Shut Down

Murky Coffee's Capitol Hill Location Shut Down

Apparently Starbucks wasn’t the only coffee shop closed yesterday. According to a post on Murky Coffee's website, their Capitol Hill location was shuttered on Tuesday by the D.C. government.

We've had a hiccup with the DC Government, and were shut-down for a couple of non-compliance issues. We're in communication with them, and expect to be back up-and-running in a couple of days.
An employee at their Arlington location told us this afternoon the issue is related to back-taxes owed to the city. Owner Nick Cho apologized to his customers for the inconvenience. It’s a bit of disconcerting news coming from a top-notch, local favorite. We hope they do indeed get it sorted out soon. more ›
