Folks in Columbia Heights salivating for a burger and cajun fries can finally step into a Five Guys today. Located at the corner of 14th and Irving streets, the shop was already bustling with a hungry lunch-time crowd. Now, anyone exiting the west Columbia Heights Metro -- surrounded on three sides with Potbelly's, Pete's Apizza and Five Guys -- will be hard-pressed to not grab something to eat In Arlington, Michael Landrum continues to......

Our own Andrew Wiseman last night happened upon what was no doubt the beginning of a really terrible morning for several Columbia Heights residents. On 13th Street NW between Clifton and Fairmont, a row of five or more parked cars were smashed up by another car crashing into them. Some had missing wheels, front ends knocked off, crunched fenders, broken bumpers and more. Police had already arrived on the scene by the time Andrew showed......

Written by DCist contributor Alicia Mazzara New Haven-style pizza is now at a Metro stop near you - well, just one, off of the Green line. Located a stone's throw from the Columbia Heights metro station, Pete's Apizza (pronounced Pete's "ah-BEETs", not like those Little Caesar commercials) is the latest addition to the neighborhood's housing and retail revival/explosion. Pete's serves up the trademark thin, chewy-crispy crusted pie, along with a selection of salads, paninis,......

Just when people thought the Target in Columbia Heights had everything, there's talk of it getting even more. ANC 1A vice chair Anne Theisen sent a message to the Columbia Heights Yahoo listserve saying Target has applied for a license to sell beer and wine. That application, as well as Rumbero's application for a sidewalk cafe on 14th Street, will be discussed next Tuesday at the ANC 1A meeting. Most of the responses on the......

Yeah, Zimmerman's walk-off was memorable. And, okay, the beer selection could use some sprucing up. (Where's the local flavor?) But, the real questions on our minds here at Transit on Thursday were as follows: 1) Did Metro work well? 2) Will it continue to work well throughout the summer? 3) Finally, how can it get better? To answer these questions, there were the big media reports, but they left us wanting a little bit......

There's been a lot of news and even more speculation about how dangerous the blocks surrounding the new Target, across the street from the Columbia Heights Metro, have become since the store opened last week. We posted about a series of muggings that occurred in the general vicinity, especially at the Metro entrance, within days of the grand opening. Good news: WTOP has since reported that a 16 year-old has been arrested in connection with......

In the department of hey, that's a really friggin' good idea, Ward 1 Council member Jim Graham put up an announcement late yesterday that the D.C. Council unanimously passed an emergency bill Tuesday to create a pilot taxi zone in Adams Morgan. The pilot taxi zone will require taxis to report to a central location to pick up riders rather than drive through the streets to find their fares. Hack inspectors will be involved in enforcing......

We're as excited about the convenience of the new Columbia Heights Target as anyone, but we've also been interested to read some of the blowback to Washington Post reporter Paul Schwartzman's gushing piece from Tuesday about the shiny new DCUSA retail development and how it's leading to a renaissance in the neighborhood. The Washington City Paper sees Schwartzman as wearing rose-colored glasses and painting every new project he comes across as another "renaissance" for a......

And, yeah, it pretty much looks exactly like a Target, although it's definitely big -- two full stories of bulk purchasing opportunities. We snapped these photos this morning at the brand new Columbia Heights store, which opened for business at 8 a.m.......

The developers of the new DC USA shopping center in Columbia Heights are still looking for more high end retail, according to a Washington Business Journal article. DC USA, located at 14th and Irving NW, still has about 80,000 square feet of space to fill, which developers hope to fill partially with fancier fare than the Target, Marshalls and Best Buy already planned for the space. Regular readers may recall that Columbia Heights residents complained......

The Adams Morgan Harris Teeter isn't the only new store soon to open in D.C. that's begun recruiting a large new staff: over the weekend the future Columbia Heights Target held its own job fair, with interviews for the 320 job openings at the huge retailer to be held throughout the end of this week. The Post went down to the job fair and chatted with some of the applicants. The grand opening of the......

In yet another sign that the ridiculously long-awaited Harris Teeter grocery store in Adams Morgan is actually going to open, Ward 1 Council member Jim Graham has posted a notice on his web site that the store will hold a Job Fair on January 9 at the Columbia Heights Community Center on Girard St. NW. Both full-time and part-time jobs at the Harris Teeter are available, and applicants are asked to bring copies of their......

The first baby born in the D.C. metro area in 2008 was Stella Jones. WJLA reported that little Stella was born at George Washington Hospital at 12:02 a.m. on New Year's Day. Melanie Smith Jones and Justin Philip Jones are the proud parents of the baby girl, who weighed in at a healthy 8 pounds and 10 ounces. The Joneses live in the Columbia Heights neighborhood. Happy Almost Holidays, Washington. With both Monday and Tuesday counting as a holiday for the federal government this year, most of D.C. is staring down a nice, long holiday break today. Even if you don't celebrate Christmas, federal holidays are great for a lot of other reasons besides a day off - you don't have to feed parking meters, for instance. But The Examiner reports that that fact isn't stopping people from shoveling coins into......

Good morning, Washington. We'll be standing by for a good chunk of the day to see what the Metro Board decides to do about the proposed fare hike - the Board is meeting at 11 a.m. for a session that is expected to produce a final vote on the fare hikes, which could go into effect as soon as January. Board members have indicated they would likely pass a fare hike that is slightly less......

Fans of Petworth bar Temperance Hall better get up there for their Sazerac cocktails as soon as possible—the bar is on its way out. Don't throw out your arms in plaintive questions to the heavens yet, though. While the bar will go, a bar will stay; the property has been sold to the folks behind Columbia Heights' The Wonderland Ballroom. Following a tip from Prince of Petworth, we caught the Wonderland owners, Matthew McGovern......

Good morning, Washington. Are ya ready for some embezzlement scandal news? Of course you are! This morning's update comes not from the embattled Office of Tax and Revenue, but rather from the D.C. Public Schools front office, as the Examiner reports that Eugene Smith, the former director of internal audits for DCPS, entered a guilty plea yesterday to charges of stealing nearly $50,000 from a charter school account. Smith was fired by the school system......

A new report from the Brookings Institution shows that the D.C. metro area has the most “walkable places” per capita of any American city -- one for every 264,000 people, beating out even New York City for walkability. Visiting Fellow Christopher B. Leinberger says that the Washington region could serve as the model for the direction the country’s other metro areas are heading over the next generation. The Associated Press already picked up on the......

Good morning, Washington. Recent increases in gun-related crime in the city seems to be today's main topic of news, just as the Supreme Court may announce today whether it intends to take another look at D.C.'s handgun ban. D.C. Mayor Adrian Fenty has scheduled a press conference this morning to address the District's position on its gun safety law, but in the meantime the Washington Post is questioning the law's effectiveness and just last......

Anyone who has spent time attending neighborhood association meetings in much of D.C. knows that 99.5 percent of the topics discussed there tend to revolve around the basic conceit that residents want a say in the kinds of businesses that are near them. More often than not that means putting pressure on existing businesses to operate in certain ways, but without a doubt a major topic of conversation at the meetings we've attended is......

Fascinating but frustrating. Those are the two words that most readily come to mind when describing David Grimm’s Kit Marlowe, Rorschach Theater’s latest production. The work’s plot is undeniably gripping, but the play is frequently hindered by a number of performances that, while certainly not poor, are strangely uneven. What results is too many moments where a scene builds in momentum and tension, but is ultimately derailed by a flat or off-beat line delivery. Some......

Good morning, Washington. Have a good Halloween? We have to admit, this year's midweek scheduling kind of put a damper on the holiday's opportunities for costumed revelry. It didn't stop us from eating a ridiculous amount of candy, though. Naturally, we feel that the children are to blame: if more kids had stopped by we wouldn't be stuck with this glut of chocolate and dearth of willpower. Perhaps this is why our childhood neighbors......

Good morning, Washington. Remember last week, when we were wondering what kind of a plan a criminal had after stealing a tanker truck hauling gasoline in Baltimore? The truck was later found parked on South Capitol Street in Southwest D.C., drained of about 7,000 gallons of No. 2 diesel fuel. This morning we learn that the missing gasoline was found at a Chevron station in Southeast Washington, which police are now investigating. Weekend Protests Saw......

As of this morning, The Red Derby showed very little evidence of its upcoming grand opening this evening at 6 p.m. The only thing separating itself from the laundromat and carryout on either side is a red logo painted above the doorway. The painting is so simple a child could have drawn it – is it a zit? A misshapen condom? Or perhaps the rear shot of a sleeping hippo? It’s actually a derby......
