Mapping Metro's Future

Mapping Metro's Future

With all the bad news surrounding Metro recently, it is sometimes tough to remember how much we rely on it. The D.C area has the third highest transit ridership in the country, behind San Francisco and New York, and more than a third of District residents commute on Metro. Possible fare increases, tragic accidents, late, crowded trains, and other gripes are legitimate, but all transit systems have problems. When it comes down to it, Metro... more ›

Morning Roundup: Stonecutter Edition

Morning Roundup: Stonecutter Edition

Yesterday morning at Mount Vernon, the cornerstone for a new George Washington museum was laid. The Post takes us through the Masonic rituals involved in the process:At yesterday's consecration, members of the Alexandria-Washington Masonic Lodge No. 22, dressed in tuxedos and white aprons, poured corn kernels and cruets of canola oil and red wine over the cornerstone. An architect and other officials inspected the rock. Then prayers were read aloud. Number 22 was the first... more ›

Chorizo Salvation at San Vicente

Chorizo Salvation at San Vicente

A couple of months ago, we were rolling down Columbia Pike in Arlington trying to find an Ethiopian bakery that was mentioned in a Washington Post article about unlikely Redskins fans. As we were stressing out about possibly overshooting our destination, we noticed a stand-alone shack perched in front of the Adams Square shopping center. San Vicente looked like it had been a Little Tavern or an Ollie’s Trolley in a previous life, but the present day signage purported to offer the mix of Salvadoran and Mexican food that is common along the Pike. more ›

Morning Roundup: Immigrant Boycott Edition

Morning Roundup: Immigrant Boycott Edition

If businesses seem a little slower than usual today, there's a good explanation -- today is the day that millions of immigrants across the United States will boycott work, part of a protest the demonstrate their economic weight and push for sensible immigration reform. The boycott has sparked divisions within the immigrant rights movement, though, with some groups and advocates in the area arguing that the action could turn public opinion against them. Development Coming Down the Pike

Development Coming Down the Pike

Momentum is building for the push to develop and improve the Columbia Pike corridor, stubborn Giant notwithstanding. A recent article in the Washington Business Journal notes that a significant piece of the development effort could begin to take shape as early as May of this year. An unidentified developer is prepared to close on a property at the corner of Columbia Pike and South Walter Reed Drive, across the street from the Arlington Cinema and Drafthouse, and turn it into a condominium complex with over 40,000 square feet of retail, the bulk of which could be a new Harris Teeter grocery store. The presence of a new, upscale grocer will likely put pressure on the Columbia Pike Giant, whose insistence on maintaining its low-slung, big box design has impeded efforts to increase the walkability and density of the commercial strip. more ›

Good morning, Washington. Please ignore the still budding trees -- summer is here. Today, highs will head into the 80s and Wednesday, it'll approach 90, according to a number of forecasts. Capital Weather notes that one thing will be missing: significant humidity. Sounds like perfect weather for an excursion to Theodore Roosevelt Island, where this photo, taken by Matt Billings and posted in DCist Photos via Flickr, was shot from. more ›

An L.A. Story

An L.A. Story

When dealing with terrorism, national security, top secret intelligence officers and the like, Washington, D.C., is typically the setting for high-stakes drama. But the folks over at Fox, with their hit show "24" seem to ignore us. They're fixated on Los Angeles as the nexus of all things terror. Granted, in real life, LAX has been targeted by terrorists, but last night when "24" characters were talking about someone or something being shot or blown... more ›
