Street Lights Out on Constitution Ave.

The District Department of Transportation is reporting multiple traffic signals are currently out on Constitution Ave. NW. As of 4 p.m., all traffic lights were out between 12th and 15th Streets, and DDOT was warning drivers to expect significant traffic delays as a result.

Being somewhat of a history buff, I remember being bummed when I first moved to D.C. to discover the National Archives were closed for renovations. A few years later, the doors opened again, and finally seeing these amazing, centuries old documents in person is something I won't forget. Flickr user FrogMiller took this crystal clear photo (with no flash, of course) of Mr. Hancock's famous signature. EXIF.

This weekend is the 45th anniversary of Jamaica’s independence from Great Britain. To commemorate this event, the Embassy of Jamaica will be hosting a series of events capped off with the Independence Sunday Market on Sunday at the Organization of American States on the corner of Constitution Ave. and 17th St. NW. Not only will there be food and crafts, but also a concert headlined by reggae artist Shaggy. Shaggy gained a great deal of...

It's summer and our beloved Arts Editor is away this week, so the agenda is a little on the short side. Here are a few things to see. >> We have written before about the Washington Project for the Arts\Corcoran's Experimental Media project. Starting this week, WPA\C is hosting a new show called SiteProjects DC. Curator Welmoed Laanstra has asked 15 local artists to create site-specific outdoor artwork, both installations and performances, through July 28,...

Getting through the work week after a long weekend can often be a drag. We loved this video of the Washington-Marion Magnet High School marching band, from Lake Charles, LA, practicing before their turn in the annual Memorial Day Parade on Monday along Constitution Ave. Maybe it'll brighten up the rest of your work day like it did ours. If you caught any of the parade, let us know who your favorite bands were in the comments.

Say hello to your old friend labor, D.C.-- not that these hearty climbers didn't work hard to scale a rock and capture an oddly captivating shot. Whether you spent the holiday laboring to keep sand out of your bathing suit on the beach or perfectly timing bathroom breaks during a Law and Order marathon at home, we hope you had a nice break. To kick off the roundup with some happy news news, it...

Instead of donning green and drinking whiskey in the afternoon, many folks in Washington will be spending Saturday speaking out against the war in Iraq. A march on the Pentagon is expected to draw tens of thousands of people, including veterans and soldiers' families. You may have already seen some of the protesters along Constitution Ave. erecting memorials to the fallen and preparing signs.

Forgive our light content so far this morning, faithful readers, but we were forced to flee DCist Headquarters about 2 hours ago in search of the welcoming embrace of friends with working electricity and Internet access. Not only is much of the Shaw neighborhood currently experiencing intermittent power outages, but one surge may have permanently damaged this editor's lap top (cue the tiny violins). Only time, or a certified PC technician, will tell. Now happily...

We always tell you where the free concerts are, but just because a concert is free does not mean that it will be good. This week, we are leading with the free concerts because they are so good. Other than the free stuff, there is so much to hear, we have selected a few options from what is less expensive, not sold out, and likely to be good.

It's that time of the year again, when people make resolutions they do not plan on keeping. Join DCist in resolving to see more art in 2007, but let's mean it. You could get started this week. >> Studio Gallery will have an invitational show featuring artists from the greater D.C. metropolitan area (January 3 to 28). This will include Suzanne Quinlan, whose work is shown at right. Open Wednesdays to Sundays, 2108 R St....

We didn't intend DCist to become the Borf News Service, but the prolific graffiti artist continues to produce a steady stream of comments and tips. Since a detailed post in January (which continues to garner comments), we've commented on the Borf backlash, rumors Borf hates Baltimore, Borf look-alikes, and even Borf on the west coast. Our attempts to secure an interview were even rebuffed by an aloof Borf, who commented that "spending the night in jail will make you hate any city ..."

DCist recently saw "The Manchurian Candidate" and saw some startling similarities to Washington in the movie and Washington in reality. First off, our recent terror warning with checkpoints leading to Capitol Hill seems to fit in with the theme of the movie.
