As a former City Paper writer, a frequent Crafty Bastards juror, and an especial admirer of zombies, squids, and other iconographic staples of the Etsyverse, I am what you call a Big Fan of the Crafty Bastards fair. I love watching bboying and wouldn't mind one iota if it were a regular feature of every party I attended. Ben Claassen III is one of the District's most valuable resources and any year I can't see his stuff is a bad one. Plus there's all the craft!

Sunday More Bboying Plz Photo: October 4, 2009

Yesterday it was pretty much impossible to avoid breakdancers. And why would you want to? Bboys at Crafty Bastards. Bboys at the kickin' Florida Avenue Grill 65th year anniversary party. I didn't make it over to the Adult Block Party but I'm going to bet it was not remiss in the uprock department. Flickrer keever04 snapped this action shot at Crafty Bastards, where the danceoff is nearly as big a crowd draw as the booths. Most of the dancers I saw around town were kids, which makes me feel like an arthritic fossil. How come it's only parties in October that bring out the bboys and the block-rocking beats?

Sure, Crafty Bastards is back today. But while you're perusing the multitudes of DIY, don't forget that the arty festival is hardly your last chance to blow a rather large wad of cash over the next 36 hours. That elusive seven-inch will certainly be calling for you from the third annual D.C. Record Fair at Comet Ping Pong on Sunday, featuring 25 of the East Coast's finest purveyors of vinyl, crates of wax in tow. The Caps, Redskins, and D.C. United all have big games with available tickets this weekend too, so there's plenty of opportunities to drop some cold hard cash for the sporting-inclined amongst us. Add in the regular Friday and Saturday night tabs, and your wallet is nearly certain to be significantly thinner on Monday morning. (Looks like a Ramen kind of week.)

The Washington City Paper's yearly Crafty Bastards event looked to be a big success on Sunday, with the entire recreation area in front of the Marie Reed Center in Adams Morgan packed with craft peddlers, buyers and lookie-loos. Many of our photographers were also there to catch the action. Did you buy anything awesome?

Seems like featuring an awesome B-Boy shot from Crafty Bastards in Photo of the Day might become an annual tradition. With all the slick moves and gravity defying flips, the competition makes for a spectacular photo shoot (if, unlike me, you could actually get close enough to see it). It's a tough choice, but this shot by prsphoto, who used a little fill flash for depth, might win out, though this cringe-worthy version -- at least for those of us not quite so flexible -- is a close second.

FRIDAY: >> Howard University alum Eric Roberson performs tonight at the Black Cat along with Emily King. Doors open at 9 p.m. $17. >> It's pretty much the end of times: Vanilla Ice will be at Foggy Bottom bar McFadden's tonight, "drinking, partying, and hosting the night" starting at 10 p.m. $5 Jager bombs and $2 Bud and Bud Light bottles are little enticement to make this event anything more than laughable, but maybe if...

This Sunday, 150 crafters from all over the country will descend upon Adams Morgan to hawk their one of a kind, hand-made items. Kitschy jewelry, googly eyed plushes, fashionable purses, reconstructed clothing and hand printed cards are the norm at the City Paper's annual Crafty Bastards Arts & Crafts Fair. With humble beginnings in 2004, Crafty Bastards took place during an unfortunate downpour at the Columbia Heights Community Marketplace. City Paper really didn't know what...

>> There are so many festivals going on this weekend, we don't feel bad mentioning them a few times to make sure you get your butt off the couch to check out as many of them as you can. We'll have more on always anticipated Crafty Bastards later today, which is Sunday in Adams Morgan. The National Book Festival, where this writer is going to nerd it up, is Saturday on the Mall. Practice your...

What a beautiful weekend, eh? Except for a bit of rain on Saturday, the weather was, if I may say so myself without sounding like my grandmother, delightful. We hope you got out during it, as the city played host to a number of activities - the National Book Festival, Crafty Bastards, and a bit outside of town, the continuation of the Maryland Renaissance Festival. Which I went to, mainly to gawk at the...

FRIDAY:

Fall is the season of festivals, so I hope you've stretched properly over the last few weeks, because this weekend is chock full of 'em.

The World's Columbian Exposition of 1893 is the sort of thing that just keeps spawning cool ideas. Not only did it spark the City Beautiful Movement -- which heavily influenced the re-design of D.C.'s monumental core -- it also saw the birth of Pabst Blue Ribbon, Wrigley's Gum, and Cracker Jack's. And, as we recently learned, the squished penny souvenir.

Good morning, Washington. We hope you had the opportunity to enjoy the beautiful weather this weekend. From the looks of the photos posted to DCist photos, a number of you did: enjoying the sunset from the roof of the Cairo, checking out a break-dancing competition at the Crafty Bastards fair, spotting SpaceShipOne at the National Air and Space Museum, and snapping a couple incomprehensible photos at the Decemberists concert at 9:30 club last night. Although...

Crafty Bastards imageAdmit it: the warm early autumn weather has tempted you to rock those white pants and that seersucker blazer just one more time (you swear!). We know -- we've seen similar lapses all over town. But this morning's undeniably chilly temps were enough to prompt even the most stalwart flip-flop-phile succumb to a more seasonally appropriate option. So suck it up and let the linen go. And then cancel your weekend plans and grab your credit cards -- you've got some shopping to do. Below DCist rounds up the best ways to blow your paycheck and cover those naked hangers.

Inspired by their successful Crafty Bastards Fair last September, the Washington City Paper has launched a "Crafty Bastards" section to their classified section where you can satiate your desire for handknit wine totes, homemade dog treats, hand made jewelry, "one of a kind miniature shoes."

When we were at the Crafty Bastards art show a couple years back, a gentleman by the stage was manning a machine which would squish pennies into souvenirs imprinted with the Crafty Bastards logo. We quickly discovered he was one of the operators of a museum here in Washington D.C. we had heard a little bit about.

In a city like D.C., you're probably seen these around: "November 2" t-shirts. The shirts are the product of the National Voice Coalition to encourage people to vote this November. The blog of a local tech company noted that users of Yahoo's messenger service can now dress their avatars in "November 2" t-shirts.

This weekend is just chock full of good stuff to do! The weather is shaping up nicely (with a chance of a storm on Saturday) so get out there.

We here at DCist couldn't hold out any longer.
