Car Crashes Into Radio Station, Inane Chatter Unaffected
One local morning sports chatter box was severely dented today.
Metro To Remain Under Manual Operation for "Several Years"
Shortly after the Metrorail crash near Fort Totten that killed nine people on June 22, 2009, WMATA decided to switch its trains to manual mode, which would give its operators more control to stop and control the speed of trains. Almost two years later though, the agency's hardly close to returning to automatic operation.
Bus Crashes Into KFC in Silver Spring
There's some pretty wild imagery coming out of Montgomery County this morning, where a Ride On bus crashed into a Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurant on the 12400 block of Georgia Avenue near the Glenmont Metro station.
Driver Who Killed Pedestrian In Adams Morgan Crash Sentenced
Chamica Adams, who drove her Dodge Caliber through a crowded median at the intersection of 18th and U Streets and Florida Avenue NW in September, was sentenced to three years and four months in jail today.
Metro Station Manager Arrested For Fatal 2008 Bus Crash
U.S. Marshals took Metro employee Ronald W. Taylor into custody at the Cheverly Metro station this morning on charges stemming from a 2008 bus crash which killed a California man in Foggy Bottom.
Bus Crashes Off I-270 Sky Ramp, One Dead, Traffic Snarled
According to reports, around 4 p.m., a bus was driven off the sky ramp of Interstate 270 in Montgomery County. The ramp is located where I-270 intersects with the Beltway. As many as 26 people were reportedly on the bus, and several remain trapped inside. The Post is reporting that one person has died as a result of the crash, while NBCWashington.com reports that there is one person pinned inside the bus. Rescue operations are currently underway, and I-270 is completely closed to vehicles in the area, which is usually a choke-point during afternoon rush hour anyway. Traffic is likely going to be backed up for some time -- we would highly recommend seeking out alternate routes or giving it plenty of time before trying to drive through that section of the Beltway.
NTSB Hammering WMATA at Red Line Crash Hearing
"This accident is a classic example of an organizational accident."
Older Metro Cars Experience Significant Damage, Even When "Sandwiched"
Photos released earlier this month by the National Transportation Safety Board reveal that Metro's series 1000 rail cars experience significant damage even when placed in the middle of a train. The photos were taken following a crash at the West Falls Church rail yard last November, when two six-car trains collided. The trains were both out-of-service, but three Metro employees, including the train operator, were injured.
Driver in Mt. Pleasant Library Crash Charged with DWI
The driver who was behind the wheel of the black Escalade that smashed into the back of the Mt. Pleasant Interim Library on Tuesday has been charged with a DWI, WJLA/ABC7 reports.

Post and Metro Spar Over Status Of Safety Resolutions
Hoo, boy -- if you thought that it had already been a laborious weekend for Metro, you ain't seen nothing yet. WMATA isn't taking too kindly to the Post's big report this morning, an expose about the previous failures of Metrorail's much-maligned crash avoidance system. The Post's report leads with a terrifying story about a 2005 incident in which not two, but three trains' avoidance systems failed, and gut feelings were the only thing separating Metro from having a three-train, rush hour pileup between Rosslyn and Foggy Bottom, underneath the Potomac River:
Metro Crash's Silver Lining: A Potential Bus Renaissance
In light of the deadly accident that killed nine people on Metro's Red Line on June 22, there's been plenty of talk about what's wrong with Metro -- and rightfully so; the agency is now at a obvious turning point in its history, where it suddenly needs to navigate a calamitous disaster and forge some sort of path regarding its future.
Two Seriously Injured in Motorcycle v. Pedestrian Crash
WJLA reports that two people were seriously injured this morning after a motorcyclist struck a pedestrian near 18th and I Streets NW. Police will investigate the crash, D.C. Deputy Fire Chief Ken Crosswhite told the news station, which happened around 9:30 a.m. and sent both people to the hospital with potentially life-threatening injuries. It's so far unclear whether the pedestrian was in a crosswalk or not.
Nine Seven Dead in Red Line Crash; No Answers Yet on Cause
UPDATE: City officials are sticking to seven confirmed dead, despite earlier news reports that nine people died. The two additional reported deaths may or may not have been due to confusion about the two critical patients -- we'll continue to monitor reports.
Photos of Car/Rowhouse Collision
We linked to the news in this morning's roundup, but just ran across these photos of the crash posted by Frozen Tropics. "Amazingly, no injuries have been reported," the blogger writes of the scene she captured in the 1100 block of Montello Avenue NE late last night. Indeed.
D.C. Film Critics Honor No Country
Mid-December has arrived, and with that comes the inevitable flood of best-of lists. The Washington Area Film Critics' Association has, for the previous five years of its existence, been in the habit of trying to get their own list out ahead of most of the other critics' societies. We can't really blame them. Considering the fact that none of the critics from the city's biggest newspaper are members, not to mention the fact that the...

Buyin' Oeno: Virginia is for (Wine) Lovers
Virginia’s love for wine is no secret. It dates back centuries with Thomas Jefferson’s personal endorsement of wine as a suitable beverage. However, when you mention “Virginia Wines” to anyone, you are met with one of two reactions: an overwhelming expression of excitement and testament to how fabulous they are or an exasperated eye roll that says it all. Whichever one you fall under is fine with us, but as avid wine drinkers we feel...
