Inspired by Jefferson Dancing, Norton Wants Own Dance Party

Eleanor Holmes Norton, in her time as D.C. Delegate, has always been one of the National Mall's most strident supporters. So it's hardly surprising that Norton wants to use the recent dancing demonstrations at the Jefferson Memorial as a leaping point to promote public use of the grounds. more ›

Where a Man Can Dance In A Giant Jefferson Head, All is Safe

Depending on your viewpoint, Saturday's demonstration in response to the arrest of four people inside the Jefferson Memorial was either a huge success or a massive failure. Or maybe both. It's impossible to quantify, honestly. more ›

Silent Dancing Protesters Arrested at Jefferson Memorial

Silent Dancing Protesters Arrested at Jefferson Memorial

According to several reports across the internet, five protesters were arrested by U.S. Park Police at around 3 p.m. Saturday afternoon in the Jefferson Memorial for dancing in silence. Touted as "civil danceobedience," the dancers were there protesting a recent court decision earlier this month that upheld a ban on dancing within the memorial. Among those arrested were Adam Kokesh, the man forcefully arrested in the video, and Edward Dickey, the event organizer. In 2008 a small flash mob had gathered at the memorial to dance in silence, but was dispersed when one woman was arrested on misdemeanor charges. A year later, stemming from that case,a judge affirmed a ban on dancing at the memorial, "in order to maintain an atmosphere of calm, tranquility, and reverence." more ›

Ban on Dancing Inside the Jefferson Memorial Upheld

In 2008, D.C. resident Brooke Oberwetter was arrested and held for several hours by Park Police for dancing inside the Jefferson Memorial with a group of about 20 nerdy libertarian wonk types who had convened for a silent midnight flash mob. The internet was not pleased. But today, a federal appellate panel ruled that the Park Police were justified in hauling Oberwetter off that evening. more ›

Consider This My Apology

Consider This My Apology

I took a little bit of flak from a certain segment of the commentariat last week for sipping some haterade before commenting Michelle Obama's dance moves. And you know what? I was wrong: the First Lady is a far better dancer than Kwame Brown or Vincent Orange -- especially when she does that move which involves marching in place. more ›

Awkward Public Dancing: Politicians Still Really Good At It

The victory dance Vincent Orange has likely been waiting so many years to perform? Somewhat underwhelming, to be honest. I mean, Kwame Brown at least gave us a little bit of The Lawnmower -- Orange flails his arms around and kind of does a spin, but that's about it. (Orange starts talking around the 55 second mark of the video, but you don't really need to watch that.) more ›

Dancing With The (D.C. Sports) Stars

With a tip of the cap to Russian Machine Never Breaks, here's footage of commercial star, noted feminist and goal-scorer (though not so much of late) Alexander Ovechkin, exhibiting some of his finest dance moves, many of them at Club Glow. If you're at all offended by truly awful dancing, this will be nearly as graphic to you as those Missy Reilly Smith advertisements. more ›

Leonsis Gives A "Dougie" Preview, Urge To Buy Tickets Rising

Remember when Washington Wizards owner Ted Leonsis, inspired by the moves of John Wall, said that he would perform the "Dougie" when the Wizards sold out a (non-marquee) game this year? Well, Leonsis, always the savvy businessman, gave WTOP a little taste of his version of the dance this morning. more ›

Ted Leonsis: "I Will Do The 'Dougie'" When Wizards Sellout

Most of Washington's sports world has been enamored with John Wall's performances on Tuesday night. And while Wall's near-triple-double in an overtime win against the Philadelphia 76ers was pretty nifty, we found ourselves more taken with Wall's pre-game dancing, in which he pulled off a fantastic version of the "Dougie," despite having a bit of a bum wheel. Never one to shy away from a fan-friendly endeavor, Wizards owner Ted Leonsis wants to get in on the act. On his blog today, Leonsis said that he would perform his own version of the "Dougie" when the Wizards sellout a game this season. Paid attendance at Tuesday's game against Philadelphia, the team's home opener, was 17,803 -- and capacity at the Verizon Center for basketball games is 20,173. Looking at the Wizards schedule, we'll bet that Leonsis shouldn't need to worry about his moves anytime soon -- the first game that leaps out to us as a real sellout possibility is when the Lakers come to D.C. on December 14. That said, we're very curious to see whether Leonsis' "Dougie" is any better than our local politicians' moves. more ›

Awkward Public Dancing: Politicians Are Really Good At It

In case you missed it, here's Vince Gray bustin' a move last night alongside Kwame Brown, Eleanor Holmes Norton, Harry Thomas Jr. and, of course, Marion Barry, who looked like he just showed up to the victory party after coaching a softball team. Gray spent most of his time dancing to Chuck Brown & The Soul Searchers' "Bustin' Loose" talking with Norton -- and getting completely overshadowed by Brown, who almost started doing the lawnmower at one point. more ›

The 2010 DCist Mayoral Dance-Off Straw Poll

'Barn Dance' Planned for Barnes Dance

You kinda had to see this one coming. With the advent of a Barnes Dance-style pedestrian crossing at 7th and H streets NW, a handful of locals have planned a whimsical "Barn Dance"-themed flash mob at the spot. Courtesy the DCist tipline, here's the Facebook page to sign up for tonight's hoedown, during which participants sporting "overalls, plaid and straw hats" will "do-se-do" through the busy Chinatown intersection. more ›

Sonia Sotomayor Parties at the Irish Channel

Sonia Sotomayor Parties at the Irish Channel

Freshly sworn in U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor was spotted (and captured in a grainy video by a FOX camera) celebrating with friends and family at Chinatown's Irish Channel Pub on Monday night. That Sotomayor went out dancing and sang karaoke in a local bar makes us supremely happy. We have high hopes that the justice will quickly become a visible fixture in our city. But Sonia, sweetheart, the Irish Channel? The last resort of visiting hockey fans and tourists staying at the Red Roof Inn who have no better ideas of where to go? DCist will admit to knocking a few pints back at the Irish Channel in emergency situations, but nearly every time we've been chased out by the unmistakable ambiance of lonely desperation (or a painfully bad cover band). We have to give props to Sotomayor for looking like she made the best of things and had a great time on Monday, but hopefully after she settles in we can help steer her in the direction of some better bars. What say you, commentariat? Where should the justice hang out? more ›

The HBO Dance: You're Doin' It Wrong

This summer's resurrected, but truncated, Screen on the Green was by all accounts a big success, even if that final one last Monday happened to fall on the hottest, stickiest night of the year. So we can hardly blame SOTG co-saviors Comcast for going down to the National Mall with their cameras to capture some film goers giving them the love. But! At the end of the video below, the cameras are pointed toward a group of people purportedly doing "the HBO Dance" during the little musical interlude before the film begins, and there's maybe one person in there doing it correctly. People, people: the HBO Dance is not a freeform, wiggly enterprise comprised of flailing about however you feel like it. When done properly, the HBO Dance is more of a jazzercise move: you put your arms straight above your head, wave them back and forth to the beat of the music, and hop up and down with both feet. That's it. No spaghetti arms, no hip shaking, and for cryin' out loud, no twisting. Let's keep this sorry display in mind for next year, everyone. more ›

Jefferson Memorial Dancer Files Suit Against Park Police Officer

Jefferson Memorial Dancer Files Suit Against Park Police Officer

Remember Brooke Oberwetter, the D.C. woman who was arrested for dancing while listening to an iPod at the Jefferson Memorial? Oberwetter was one of a larger group of libertarian-leaning Washingtonians who gathered at the memorial to celebrate Jefferson's birthday by quietly dancing, and she ended up being the only one handcuffed and arrested after U.S. Park Police officers tried to break up the party. The whole episode was captured on videotape. more ›

Woman Arrested for Dancing at the Jefferson Memorial

The D.C.-based libertarian blogosphere is up in arms today over the Saturday night arrest of D.C. resident Brooke Oberwetter at the Jefferson Memorial. The story goes like this: a group of about 20 nerdy libertarian wonk types gathered at midnight on Saturday for a sort of flash mob at the memorial to celebrate the birthday of their favorite founding father. They gathered at the memorial, each with an iPod, to dance together while wearing headphones. more ›
