D.C. Central Kitchen Steps Up to Fill Elderly Meal Void

DCCK's Sound Bites Festival Returns For Second Year

DCCK's Sound Bites Festival Returns For Second Year

Last year, DC Central Kitchen teamed up with the 9:30 Club to start what will hopefully continue as a traditional kick off to summer: the first-ever Sound Bites. The event brings local chefs and bands to the iconic club to prepare food and provide jams for those in attendance -- and all the proceeds benefit DCCK. Soundbites returns on on May 22 this year with a new lineup, including local acts (Ra Ra Rasputin and DJ lil'e) and fare from 25 District restaurants and food trucks. DCist caught up with DCCK's William Neuheisel, who gave us the details on this year's event. more ›

Carla Hall Joins D.C. Central Kitchen Board of Directors

Carla Hall Joins D.C. Central Kitchen Board of Directors

We love Carla Hall. (We're a sucker for the "hootie hoo," what can we say.) We also love the D.C. Central Kitchen. (We're also a sucker for charities that aren't afraid to stand up to bullies.) So it's a good day when the two join forces: according to the charity's blog, Hall has joined the Central Kitchen's board of directors. more ›

The Source's Scott Drewno came out on top at D.C. Central Kitchen's 7th annual Capital Food Fight, which took place last night at the Ronald Reagan Building. The Fight pitted Chefs Victor Albisu (BLT Steak), Will Artley (Evening Star Cafe), Spike Mendelsohn (Good Stuff Eatery and We, the Pizza) and Drewno against each other in an Iron Chef-style cooking competition. more ›

Repair to Dinner with Ripert

Repair to Dinner with Ripert

Dinner with a bear, a silver fox and a noisy Spaniard sounds like the punchline to a good joke. But if you happen to have nine friends with more than a thousand bucks to burn or have a really awesome sugar daddy, you can bid on a private dinner for 10 with Chefs Tom Colicchio, Eric Ripert and Jose Andres on November 10. Bidding on eBay starts at $10,000 -- or you can "Buy it Now" for $25,000. more ›

D.C. Central Kitchen Vans Vandalized

D.C. Central Kitchen Vans Vandalized

The D.C. Central Kitchen had several of its vans vandalized last night, and, understandably, many people were flabbergasted. Why would anyone want to vandalize vehicles belonging to a group whose wide-ranging missions include job training, feeding the less fortunate and supporting better nutrition among children? more ›

Robert Egger: Rush-Buster

We know better than to take the bait from Rush Limbaugh. But Robert Egger, founder of the DC Central Kitchen, couldn't help responding to the radio host's recent comments that non-profit employees were "lazy idiots" and "rapists in terms of the finance and economy." The Central Kitchen does so much good work, and we can hardly imagine a more appropriate person to respond to Limbaugh's latest struggle with diarrhea of the mouth. more ›

Roti Mediterranean: Free Lunches for Donations

Roti Mediterranean: Free Lunches for Donations

The old saw is true that "there's no such thing as a free lunch." But at least for today, the money you spend can go to a good cause. As part of their opening festivities, Roti Mediterranean Grill (1747 Pennsylvania Ave. NW) is giving away free lunches, but requesting donations be made to D.C. Central Kitchen. The non-profit trains formerly homeless men and women how to cook, using donated surplus food to feed other hungry individuals, as well as providing catering services to some local charter schools. The Roti promotion runs from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., and includes a sandwich, salad or Mediterranean plate plus fountain beverage. Rules stipulate that you must be in line by 2 p.m. to take advantage of the deal. more ›

Some Day, There Will Be Spring: Rooting DC

Some Day, There Will Be Spring: Rooting DC

So it’s February and the snowpocalyses of weeks past are still staring us in the face. It is not spring yet, as much as we’d like it to be. But that doesn’t mean we can’t plan for it and start thinking about those delicious vegetables we’d like to grow right in our own backyards -- those of us who have backyards, anyway. The Rooting DC 2010 Gardening Forum held yesterday near Mt. Vernon Square had a springtime solution even for apartment dwellers: sharing and community. more ›

Fun and Fare for a Cause at Capital Food Fight

D.C. restaurateurs and food fanatics alike turned out in droves for this year's sold out Capital Food Fight to benefit D.C. Central Kitchen–although it's unclear whether they were there for the food, the fierce competition or to see how long it would take José Andrés to lose his voice. (For the record: it started to give out sometime after Round 2.) Chef Michael Mina, creator of Bourbon Steak and the only out-of-town chef participating in the competition, took the crown from reigning champ Barton Seaver during a final round that featured coquitos (baby coconuts) as the secret ingredient. more ›

The Weekly Feed: Offally Good Edition

The Weekly Feed: Offally Good Edition

It may be a bit kitschy going with a Halloween theme for the dish of the week, but offal is delicious, though perhaps a little stomach-turning for some. In olden times, it only seemed obvious to make something out of every part of the animal. But in a world of industrial food production, it seems most people only turn to the prime portions - breasts, hams, steaks, etc. That leaves behind a multitude of organs, bits and bobs that no longer seem as palatable in the face of conventional proteins. Offal can be a challenge for some - gelatinous, chewy, squeaky or pasty textures. But for those who love the variety it is a treat. more ›
