Last winter, four co-workers canceled on me for Restaurant Week lunch in the course of one morning. Instead of moping and microwaving some soup, I headed to TenPenh’s bar, just steps from my office, for lunch on my own. This Restaurant Week, I’ve reveled in the art of solo midday meals. Reservations, coordination, and flaky friends are not needed. Free seats at the bar are almost always plentiful, though last week, I could have also had my pick of tables. I found several empty seats at most every dining room I visited—perhaps a function of the stumbling economy—regardless of what OpenTable had to say. Show up after 1 or 1:30, especially at a larger dining room, and you’ll likely never have a problem getting seated anywhere you'd like.

Tom reports in this week's Dish that John Wabeck, executive chef of Firefly just south of Dupont Circle, is departing at the end of the month. Wabeck has been plating up fantastic dishes for years at Firefly, which is why it ranks as one of my favorite places. Now he's decided that he might want to pursue, according to Tom, either "the wine thing," or "the kitchen thing." Sounds like a case of burnout to me. It's too bad, too, because I was really looking forward to the Spring menu.

What are the secret passions of Washington's busiest chefs? A new, limited edition calendar lets D.C. diners see perhaps more then they ever wanted to of their favorite chefs. Head chefs and sous-chefs alike from three of the District's most fashionable restaurants strip down to their skivvies in a new calendar, while showcasing their passions outside of the kitchen. Put together as a promotional tool by simoneink, a boutique consulting and public relations firm that represents TenPehn, DC Coast and Ceiba, the calendar is causing quiet a stir.

After weeks of teasing, the participants in the next restaurant week have finally been announced. And the list is good -- though DCist noticed a few disappointments. We were hoping to dine at Corduroy, Firefly, or maybe even Belga Cafe, but none of those restaurants made the list. There are, however, some great alternatives. The trinity of Ten Penh, DC Coast, and Ceiba are all participating, as are Charlie Palmer Steak, Zola, and over a hundred more restaurants in D.C. and Northern Virginia. Reserve a table now -- as the restaurants are sure to fill up quickly. And whatever you do, please note whether or not you're dining at a participating restaurant. eGullet poster "Mark Sommelier" recounts the following horror story:

Last year a table of 4 came in, rang up a check over $500 and then wanted to argue when the check came that they should pay $30.04 for dinner. Showing them the list of participating restaurants that DID NOT include ours didn't help. This has happened every year since RW started.
