Scare Force One Tames DemonCats, Bombshells Make It Three In A Row
Transgender Roller Derby Jammer Skates Her Way To Acceptance
When Kayley Whalen signed up for roller derby in May 2008, she lied about who she was.
“I was required to sign a code of conduct that stated, ‘transsexual women are allowed to join if it has been at least two years since surgery, per International Olympic Committee rules’,” she writes in a recent article for FiveOnFive, a roller derby magazine.

D.C. Rollergirls All-Stars Crushed by Carolina
D.C. (#11 East seed) and Carolina (#7 East seed) faced off Saturday at the Dulles Sportsplex for their second match-up in four months -- Carolina won a 97-92 nail-biter in February. D.C. had high hopes for a reversal of fortunes, but resignations and injury had dealt hefty blows to D.C.'s roster in the intervening months -- instead, the bout turned into the largest defeat D.C. has suffered this season.
Scare Force One Has Landed...As Season Five Champs
The fifth DC Rollergirls' season has come to an end -- and what a finale it was. The two teams that had split the first four seasons' titles gave the crowd a thriller of a Championship bout before Scare Force One finally pulled away in the last few minutes to the delight of their boisterous fans.
D.C. All-Stars Snap Home Losing Streak Against Providence
It had been a long time coming. The D.C. Rollergirls All-Stars, who had slipped to #11 in the East in the latest rankings, snapped a frustratingly long home losing streak with a decisive 106-64 victory over Providence Roller Derby's Rhode Island Riveters (#10), improving D.C.'s hopes of making this year's WFTDA East Region Playoffs.
A Day In The Life: National Zoo Animal Keeper
Former DC Rollergirl Kristen Clark has worked at the National Zoo since 2005, volunteering there for several years before landing her dream job. Clark is assigned to the Great Cats & Bears unit, where she is one of two primary lion keepers. During her work day, which usually begins at 6:30 a.m., she's responsible for looking after the lions, caracals, coatis and sometimes the prairie dogs. I was lucky enough to be able to spend some time with her and her charges last Sunday.

The second bout of the afternoon served as a preview of the upcoming championship bout, as undefeated Scare Force One faced the DC DemonCats.
D.C. Falls to Dutchland, DemonCats Eliminate Bombshells
A roller derby feast was on the menu at the Armory Saturday afternoon, as a record crowd of 2,275 enjoyed a mouth-watering double-header. Proceedings began with an East Region clash featuring the ninth-ranked DC Rollergirls All-Stars playing host to the tenth-ranked Dutchland Rollers All-Stars, followed by a home team encounter between the DC DemonCats and the Cherry Blossom Bombshells.
Scare Force One Disarms Bombshells, Moves to 3-0
The fourth bout of the DC Rollergirls' home season also served as the league's fifth birthday celebration. Before the main event began, several current skaters who have been with DCRG since season one were joined in the center of the track by a slew of retired "originals" to a warm reception from the crowd.
Scare Force One Wins Battle of the Undefeated
Well before the first whistle, Saturday's bout at the Armory between the DC DemonCats and Scare Force One promised plenty. After the first two bouts of the D.C. Rollergirls' fifth season, these two teams each held 1-0 records. What's more, SF1 and DCDC have split the first four championship titles.

DC Rollergirls All-Stars Climb a Spot at Regionals
The DC Rollergirls All-Stars came into this weekend's Eastern Regionals seeded 10th. Of ten teams. Team co-captain Battery Operated told us on Friday that she had modest hopes that the team would climb as high as seventh in the rankings. Respectable performances in defeat against Carolina (#7) and Steel City (#5) in the first two rounds put those lofty aspirations to rest. But our All-Stars did notch a convincing win in their final bout, toppling the Dutchland All-Stars to finish the tournament in 9th place.
DC Rollergirls Head North for Eastern Regionals
The DC Rollergirls' All-Star team arrived in White Plains, New York last night to participate in Derby in the Burbs, the league's Eastern Regional Tournament. The action began this morning, and our All-Stars are scheduled to skate at noon. The Championship bout is slated for Sunday evening.
Yesterday, we caught up with DCRG All-Star Co-Captain, Battery Operated (real name Suzie, a 29-year old land use planner from Northern Virginia. If we told you any more than that, we'd have to kill you.)

Kay Johnson, aka A-Kay 47, is soon going to see greater danger than she finds on the D.C. Rollergirls' flat track. As a member of the U.S. Coast Guard, she is bound for pre-deployment training in Port Smith, Virginia, where she will be stationed until she departs in April for Bahrain. There she will serve on a patrol boat, protecting oil platforms and other sites off the coast of Bahrain and Kuwait from suicide bombers and other threats.
Return of the Rollergirls
The DC Rollergirls' fourth season kicked off at the D.C. Armory on Sunday afternoon, as reigning champs DC DemonCats held on in a tight contest to beat former perennial winners Scare Force One. The lead changed multiple times, but the ladies in red pulled away in the final five minutes, holding off a last-ditch comeback attempt to remain unbeaten since October 2008. To think: you were probably stuck inside watching the Redskins lose, when you could have been taking in this awesome spectacle.
Scare Force One See First Loss in DC Rollergirls Match
Saturday's DC Rollergirls event at the D.C. Armory found team Scare Force One entering the bout undefeated over the entire two year existence of DCRG, but left them with their first ever loss, to scrappy challengers DC DemonCats. DCist contributor James Calder has become more or less the unofficial official photographer of DCRG, and he was kind enough to share some of his photos from this historic matchup. There are five remaining scheduled bouts on the Rollergirls schedule; check the web site for dates.
Attack of the Eight-Wheeled Women: Roller Derby
The Feb. 23 start of the first bout of the DC Rollergirls’ second season was delayed by 45 minutes, because the line to get into the D.C. Armory snaked back to the Metro stop. Before the evening was over, the concession stands ran out of food. But the most telling indicator of the Rollergirls’ growing popularity (besides the cover story the Washington Post Magazine ran last fall) is the diversity of the crowd that showed up — all the types you might ordinarily find at a sporting event, plus a decent contingent of punks and goths.

Flickr user JamesCalder must have risked life and limb to get this shot at the DC Rollergirls' practice. The player looks like she's standing over a recent kill, daring someone to make fun of those awesome socks (we certainly won't be saying anything!). EXIF.
Alterna-Sports on the Rise
Things are looking a little down for mainstream sports in the district. The Nats are cellar-dwelling. Our two favorite eccentric stars are sidelined. We can always count on DC United to keep our spirits up, but their success only nudges the District's collective batting average above the Mendoza line. With this in mind, we're eagerly looking beyond coverage of sport's established powers.

FRIDAY: If loving Busta Rhymes' new album, The Big Bang, is wrong — well we sure as hell don't want to be right. Yes, Busta has always been one of those charismatic rap superstars without much substance to back him up, and yes, there was a time when his shortcomings had become awfully grating. But now that he's hooked up with Dr. Dre's Aftermath label, that time appears to have ended. This is what summertime...
