The District Department of Transportation is busy installing a new contraflow, south-bound bicycle lane on 15th Street NW, which will extend from U Street NW to Massachusetts Avenue NW. Initial work began on Monday, and DCist spotted the work crew out just above P Street this afternoon as they put down the directional bike lane symbols.

The District Department of Transportation on Wednesday announced the ten projects that have been selected to receive funding through DDOT's Transportation Enhancement Program. The funding includes grants ranging from $50,000 to $579,500 that go toward making improvements on a variety of transportation related projects. Funding for the program is provided through the Federal Highway Administration. A full list of the selected projects from the DDOT announcement is after the jump.

Road Collapse Closes 1400 Block of Meridian Place NW

A partially collapsed roadway has forced city officials to close the 1400 block of Meridian Place NW to vehicular traffic this afternoon. District Department of Transportation spokesperson John Lisle said the sunken area is about 20 feet by 4 feet, and that DDOT is already on the scene making repairs.

Vision of Streetcar Utopia Presented At DDOT Meeting

It's been a while since we've posted such a sweet piece of transit porn; so, streetcar advocates, feel free to keep drooling as you read the rest of this text. To the right (and in more detail here), you'll find DDOT's comprehensive idea for an expanded streetcar network, based on the existing plans for H Street NE and Anacostia.

Brentwood Road NE is currently closed from Rhode Island Ave. to Saratoga Ave. due to a gas leak, according to District Department of Transportation spokesperson John Lisle. A construction crew working in the area caused the leak when they struck an underground gas line, Lisle said.

The District Department of Transportation says it will close some lanes of traffic at the South Dakota Ave. bridge this week as rehabilitation work continues on the bridge itself. Beginning Tuesday, October 20 through Thursday, October 22, from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day, there will be only one lane open to traffic in each direction in the area of the bridge on South Dakota Ave. NE. Drivers are reminded to pay attention to the overhead lane signals and to use caution when traveling through the work zone.

DDOT Schedules Public Meetings on Streetcars

The District Department of Transportation is bringing its show on the road in the coming month in an effort to do public outreach in all eight wards on the biggest projects in its pipeline, including those streetcars you've been hearing so much about. You may have seen different versions of this list of upcoming public meetings, but below is the revised, and most up-to-date, calendar now available.

City officials gathered this morning to open the new Union Station Bike Transit Center, the first secure bicycle parking facility of its kind on the East Coast.

City Launches Circulator iPhone App

Following the introduction earlier this year of Where's My Bus?, the real-time mobile bus arrival application for the DC Circulator bus system, today the District Department of Transportation announced the launch of its own Circulator iPhone app, available for download for $0.99 from the iTunes Store.

Georgetown Circulator Route Will Continue Up Wisconsin Ave.

It feels like it was only a couple weeks ago that the District Department of Transportation confirmed that they would be altering the Georgetown Circulator bus route so that it no longer traveled north on Wisconsin Ave. And the official announcement of the change, wasn't that just last week? Yes, and, oh yeah, that's right. But this morning, city officials announced that they have changed their minds, and the current Circulator route will stay intact.

More Circulator Route Changes in Store

Last week, we reported that the Georgetown/Union Station route of the popular Circulator bus would cease traveling up Wisconsin Ave. beginning Oct. 4, and Monday the District Department of Transportation announced several other route changes to the Circulator buses. The changes will result in the complete cancellation of the National Mall loop during the off-season, plus the loss or addition of service to some stops on other routes.

The 1300 block of Kenyon Street NW (between 13th and 14th streets) closed beginning this morning as part of the ongoing Columbia Heights Streetscape Project. DDOT is advising motorists that crews are scheduled to complete an asphalt overlay on that block of Kenyon by close of business on Wednesday (9/23), weather permitting. Traffic is being detoured to Park Road or Columbia Road.

Georgetown Circulator to Stop Going Up Wisconsin Ave.

The Georgetown/Union Station route of the popular Circulator bus is slated to cease traveling up Wisconsin Ave. to Whitehaven St. before it turns around, DDOT spokesperson John Lisle confirmed today.

Union Station Bike Transit Center Grand Opening Date Set

We finally have an exact date for the official opening of the $4 million Union Station Bike Transit Center: October 2 will mark the grand opening for the long-awaited (and somewhat delayed) facility, a spokesperson for Mobis/Bikestation confirmed today. The Bike Transit Center, paid for by the U.S. Department of Transportation and DDOT, will offer secure bike parking, a changing room, lockers, bike rentals, repairs and a small retail shop selling bike accessories, for about $1 a day. The facility will be the first of its kind on the East Coast, and cyclists all over the metro area have been anticipating the opening of the station for some time. See this story from the Washington Post last month for more background on the BTC.

The District Department of Transportation reports that as of about 11:45 a.m., a water main break has forced 16th Street NW to close in both directions between V Street and Euclid Street. The main break occurred in the 2400 block of 16th Street NW.

Streetcar Rail Work to Close Two Intersections on H Street NE

The District Department of Transportation is moving ahead with the installation of streetcar slabs and tracks along H Street NE, despite the fact that the streetcars themselves still have several planning hurdles to overcome before they'll be cleared to start running. But the laying of tracks will cause two intersections on H Street to be temporarily closed this week.

Have You Seen This Sign? Then We Guess It's Working

The District Department of Transporation's Twitter feed (@DDOTDC) just sent out this image of a pretty hilarious sign that's posted somewhere in the city. Anybody recognize where it is, and/or have any guesses as to what on earth it means? We're pestering DDOT to find out, and they're playing the whole thing awfully coy, but we'll hopefully get back to you with the answer soon. All we can venture right now is that if a sign stating "research program demonstration project on signage" is causing a lot of people to notice the sign, then said project is surely a wild success.

Chinatown Archway Work to Close Part of H Street Overnight

You've probably noticed the ongoing construction surrounding the Chinatown Archway at H and 7 Streets NW. The Archway itself has been covered up for several weeks, and the renovation work is expected to wrap up before the end of August. In order to complete the construction, DDOT plans to close H Street entirely between 6th and 7th Streets NW overnight tonight. The 600 block of H Street will be closed from midnight until to approximately 5 a.m. on Tuesday morning while crews move large equipment needed for the renovations into place. Drivers are instructed to follow posted signs, and use F Street or I Street to detour around the area.

Streetcar Updates

District Department of Transportation director Gabe Klein is set to meet with the public tonight to provide an update on the epically delayed plans for a streetcar line along H Street NE. The project is the second of two stalled streetcar plans, the other along South Capitol Street in Anacostia. In advance of tonight's big meeting, which is being co-hosted by Advisory Neighborhood Commissions 5B, 6A and 6C, the Washington Business Journal's Jonathon O'Connell provides a preview.

Around 20 Bus Shelters Vandalized Overnight

An estimated 20 District bus shelters were vandalized overnight, according the District Department of Transportation. An investigation is still ongoing and DDOT does not yet have a full report on the exact number of bus shelters involved or the extent of the damage.

DDOT Officers Can Now Issue Parking and Traffic Tickets

Just when you thought the District's willingness to give out tickets couldn't get any more zealous, the District Department of Transportation has just completed training their first batch of Traffic Control Officers who are now authorized to issue traffic citations, according to a news release.

President Obama is starting bilateral talks with China here in Washington today, which means residents can expect to be inconvenienced in one way or another for the next two days by the roughly 150 Chinese dignitaries currently in town. Expect additional motorcades and intermittent, temporary road closures in the vicinity of the Ronald Reagan Building and the White House. DDOT says minor delays due to closures should be expected on both inbound and outbound 14th Street between Pennsylvania and Constitution Avenues until at least 6 p.m. Drivers intending to head southbound out of the city on 14th Street this evening are advised to use the 9th Street tunnel instead, while those heading into the city should use 12th Street or 7th Street.

'Quick Curbs' Installed at 15th and W NW

Greater Greater Washington reports that DDOT has at last installed "quick curbs" at one corner of the intersection of 15th and W Streets NW, where a pedestrian was killed in May. The intersection is famously dangerous and confusing for pedestrians and drivers alike, as it also meets Florida Ave. in a jumble of diverging one-way traffic patterns. The "quick curbs" are plastic markers designed to steer traffic farther away from pedestrians. Other work that's been completed at the intersection includes a "Turn on Green Arrow Only" sign to prevent drivers from turning right on red onto W Street. GGW also says DDOT tells them that more quick curbs for the remainder of the intersection are scheduled to be installed, as are signal improvements for pedestrians.

DDOT Launches Real Time Circulator Mobile App

While Metrobus users have been eagerly awaiting the official July re-launch of NextBus, DDOT and Mayor Adrian Fenty announced today that Circulator riders now have a mobile application, dubbed "Where's My Bus?", that allows smartphone users to track Circulator buses in real time. All you have to do is go to http://circulator.dc.gov/ from any mobile device (the url works in any browser, really), select the Circulator route and bus stop, and it'll tell you where the closest bus is.

DDOT and the MPD have announced the following roads will be closed for part of this weekend while two big events are underway: the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure and UNIFEST.

Minor Flooding, Power Outages After Overnight Storm

Here at DCist Storm Command Central, we're about 15 minutes away from declaring this last week an official Deluge '09 Event (loyal readers may recall the previous incarnation of this designation, Deluge '06). The latest press release from the District Department of Transportation is really pushing this decision over the top. Could Davy DCist be on his way down to DCist HQ? Check back in later to find out.

Florida Ave. Remains Closed After Water Main Break

DDOT has sent around word that Florida Ave. NW between 17th Street and California remains closed due to this morning's massive water main break. The 1700 block of V Street NW is also closed at this time. From the release:

WASA crews are on site and are working to repair the broken 20-inch water main. There is significant damage to the roadway as well, and it is likely to take at least several hours to complete the repairs. In the meantime, motorists are advised to use alternate routes including U Street, to detour around the affected area.
In other words, the evening commute in this area is going to be a mess. Go around it if at all possible. City Desk has more photos of the flooding, and the Post has video of the impressively large sinkhole that formed as a result.

Details on the 14th Street Bridge Construction Plan

Martin already mentioned the city's announcement that major work on the 14th Street bridges will commence this month and continue on for two years, but here are some of the finer details, released by DDOT and the mayor's office yesterday:

Kwame Brown: Nats Should Pay for Late Night Metro

The mayor's office and DDOT may have come to an understanding that the city will continue to foot the bill for extended Metro service after late night Nationals games, but at least some D.C. Council members aren't pleased. Here's a statement just sent out by At-large Council member Kwame Brown (D):

"The District paid an enormous price to build the Nationals Stadium,” said Councilmember Brown. “It’s absurd for District residents to cover the cost of extended Metro service when the Nationals are enjoying a stadium paid for by the people. At some point you have to ask when enough is enough. It’s time for the Nationals to step up to the plate."
That's pretty much what we were thinking yesterday. Any more Council members want to come out against the mayor on this one? Send in yer statements!
