Diane Rehm Injured in Freak Accident

WAMU's Diane Rehm wasn't behind the microphone for her regular 2-hour Friday slot of The Diane Rehm Show today, because she was reportedly injured in one of those bizarre accidents that seem like only happen on TV sitcoms. Filling in for the host, Susan Page of USA Today reported that Rehm was running across the street on Thursday when her heel got caught in the leg of her pants. As a result, Rehm tripped, and she managed to break her pelvis during the fall. Talk about bad luck. She'll now be out for at least a few weeks while she recuperates. We wish her a speedy recovery.

If you were traveling over the holiday weekend, you would have easily missed the announcement that popular local NPR affiliate WAMU 88.5 FM will be making big changes to their broadcast schedule -- most notably moving the entirety of their popular weekend bluegrass programming to an HD Radio channel, leaving many listeners upset and confused as to how the station could abandon their signature music programs on the regular FM dial. Here's what's going to happen come Sept. 17 (or check out the entire programming scheme here):

>> Well, we know who Diane Rehm won't be supporting for President in 2008: Newt Gingrich. The former Speaker of the House was on her WAMU-produced NPR show this morning, but ducked out 20 minutes short of his hour-long segment; Ms. Rehm was not pleased. "I think he just came on the show to sell his book," a caller said, to which Diane replied, "I think so too, and I'm FURIOUS about it." Another...

I wouldn't be here if I didn't love it… Restaurants in Anacostia? Is it time to put a sit down restaurant in the middle of Anacostia? That's the question Washington Business...

Metrorail riders are very familiar with the distinctive voice of WMATA's police chief, Polly Hanson, telling us over the intercom to ask: "Is that your bag?" when we see unattended items on the train or in stations. Polly has gotten us into the mindset of safety first, and we thank her. Click here for complete WMATA safety and security guidelines. Now we have a new guy to listen to, but you'll be lucky if you...

It seems that folks over at IndeBleu, the soon-to-be-open Indian-French fusion restaurant in Gallery Place, are putting the finishing touches on their restaurant operation, putting out an all points bulletin via the Post's Tom Sietsema that they're looking for a friendly wait staff, that, as the general manager says, will make diners feel "important and cared for and wonderful."

DCist is introducing a new ocassional feature today called "Observing Washington," a place where DCist contributors and others who have interesting observations on life in Washington have a little more room to write and explore all things D.C.-related. This is something a little more substantive than a typical blog post, something a little more constructed.
