>> Knee Deep is the headlining act but Janelle Monae (pictured) is also on the bill. Monae has been praised by the likes of Erykah Badu and Sean "Diddy" Combs, who signed her to his Bad Boy label. She'll be at Iota in Arlington. $10, 8:30 p.m.

If DJ Rekha's set at the Black Cat in January is any indication, there is an unrequited demand for international dance music in the District. That event not only sold out, but people of all stripes were dancing to the same beat and the crowd reflected one of this city's greatest assets, its cultural and ethnic diversity. One can expect more of the same tomorrow night at Bohemian Caverns, where two of global electronica's most respected practitioners, Cheb i Sabbah (pictured right) and Janaka Selekta (pictured below), will be performing at Līv in an event dubbed Electroganic, whose proceeds will benefit Race Against Domestic Violence.

Bhangra, an infectious folk music and dance style from the Punjab region of India and Pakistan, has slowly crept into the mainstream club scene. The driving force behind this increase in popularity are the South Asian DJs of Great Britain and North America, who took this traditional form and infused it with the programmed sounds of hip-hop, dancehall, and techno. One of the most well-known names in this movement is DJ Rekha (pictured), a New York-based artist who is bringing her international grooves to the Black Cat on Saturday.

We're frankly mostly of the mind that New Year's Eve is best spent at a house party with good friends -- going out to a club is almost always overpriced and often a big letdown. But in the event you don't have a party to attend, are new in town, or for any other reason are facing tonight without a firm plan, here's a few of our suggestions on how to have a fun and not too expensive evening at the last minute.

So now you know who we loved locally this year. Here's our list of the live shows that came through town and left a lasting impression in '07.

FRIDAY:

This past Friday night and with little fanfare, Alberto’s in Dupont Circle restarted its ovens and pizza-making operations, less than four months after a fire seriously damaged the P street location and left a pizza shaped hole in many pizza lovers' hearts. The same fire also forced the closure of the DJ Hut located above Alberto’s and the Subway next door, both of which remain closed.

To say Stevie Wonder is a good artist would be an understatement. Over five decades, Wonder has amassed a catalog that not only includes over 30 albums but numerous songwriting and production credits. Fans in the District were treated last month to a two-and-a-half hour trip through a slew of rhythms and emotions. It’s pretty remarkable how much one performance can change your perception of an artist. Take Patrick Wolf. Prior to his first ever show in the District this past Monday night, we might have classified him as a musician whose sensibilities lie somewhere between electronic music and Baroque pop. We now know, however, that while stuttering, glitchy beats sometimes take precedence on his albums, the heart and soul of his songs lie in the string arrangements.
