New Dog Park Rules Should Allow More Off-Leash Time
Mark down an initial battle victory to the owners in the long and strained D.C. doggy wars. The Examiner reports on a change in the regulations governing the establishment of off-leash dog parks in the District that should make it easier to create fenced-in spaces for dogs to play. Dog owners in the city have long complained about a dearth of spaces where they could legally let dogs off their leashes to get exercise. Among...
Leashless Dog Lands D.C. Man in Jail
A few weeks ago DCist dug into status of dogs in the district. Needless to say, pet owners and non-owners alike had a few things to say about the availability of dog parks and picking up poochs' poop. Now we hear about the case of Deputy White House Spokesman Dana Perino's husband, who spent a day in jail for his failure to keep his canine companion on a leash. Back in November, Perino's husband, British...
Morning Roundup: Believe the Hype Edition
Good morning, D.C. Thanks to all of you who came out to the Voting Rights Happy Hour last night. We had a great time meeting everyone and chatting about the future of full voting rights for D.C. Our friends and co-hosts at DC Vote were thrilled to be able to sign up so many new interested members and volunteers for their upcoming Voting Rights March on April 16, so thanks to them for coming out...
Morning Roundup: Protesters On the Way Edition
Today will be sunny with highs in the mid 80s. If you're looking for something to do this evening the D.C. blogger meetup is tonight. With 30 people RSVP'd for "yes" or "maybe" it looks it will be just as popular as last month's event. Ok, we know you still find the whole idea of a meetup a bit weird, but we promise you'll be able to communicate in just plain english. No Klingon, we swear.
Morning Roundup: Hungover and Full of Cake Edition
A bleary-eyed good morning to you, Washington. Thanks to everyone who came out to DCist's first birthday party at Stetson's last night. Although this DCist was stuck out of town, he's confident that a good time was had by all. The evidence will no doubt trickle into Flickr over the course of the day — dcJohn already has the first two such pics here.
WMATA Grapples With Gas Prices: Escalating diesel prices are affecting the transit agency's bottom line, producing a looming $22 million shortfall. Officials are sensitive to the recent frequency of fare increases, however, and say that in order to make up the difference they intend to leverage diesel futures and to make internal cuts rather than raise prices again.
Dupont Killer Convicted: Just over a year ago, Dupont waiter Adrian Alstad was shot to death in a crime that shook Northwest residents' conception of the area's safety. Yesterday one of the men responsible for his death, twenty year-old Kurt Williams, was sentenced to twenty-two years for the crime. Williams didn't pull the trigger, however; the man who did was a minor at the time, and will be released when he turns 21.
More Mixing Bowl Delays Ahead: We remember when VDOT promised that the worst of the I-95 delays were over. That may have been technically true — or perhaps we just dreamed it. Either way, we foolishly took it to mean that driving through that godforsaken expanse of asphalt would somehow become bearable. Not so. In addition to last night's detours, this weekend will see the interchange closed from 8:30 p.m. on Saturday until 10 a.m. Sunday.
