Peebles Hints That He Might Finance Gray Recall Effort

Recalling an elected official in the District, especially one elected citywide, takes organization and money. The money might be coming for an effort top recall Mayor Vince Gray -- and from a man that supported him in the 2010 mayoral race. more ›

One City, New and Improved?

One City, New and Improved?

Today, Mayor Vince Gray announced two new major senior appointments for his troubled administration -- Chris Murphy as his Chief of Staff and Andrea Pringle as his Deputy Chief of Staff, the latter responsible for one of the hardest-hitting campaign mailers put out during the divisive 2010 mayoral contest. more ›

Don Peebles Announces End of Non-Campaign. Or Not.

Don Peebles, the District's longest-running mayoral non-candidate, appeared this morning on WPFW radio, where he finally announced that no, he won't be running for mayor. Mike Neibauer of the Washington Business Journal tweeted: "Peebles 'planned to run as an independent,' he tells Jonetta. 'You never say never, but I do not plan to be a candidate.'" Finally. Some closure. Since late last year, Peebles has publicly toyed with the idea of bringing his total lack of experience and deep pockets to the mayoral contest, setting up a somewhat awkward dance between him and now-candidate Vince Gray. But even when Gray entered the race in March, Peebles could still be found entertaining the idea of running, going so far as to claim that he'd jump in the fray after the Democratic primary if Mayor Adrian Fenty were not defeated then. That no longer seems like it will happen. Or will it? Neibauer quotes Peebles as adding, "If I felt that one of the candidates were transformation and what the District truly needed, I never would run." Oh jeez. That sounds like a loophole large enough to drive his non-candidacy through. Again. Some observers have lost their patience with Peebles' mayoral hokey-pokey. Tweets the Washington Post's Mike DeBonis: "Enough of this guy." more ›

The Indecision of Don Peebles, in 140 Characters or Less

Real estate developer Don Peebles has been playing the "Maybe I will, maybe I won't" game since late last year on whether he'll jump into the District's mayoral contest. But even an admonition from WRC/NBC4's Tom Sherwood (or DCist's own Sommer Mathis, for that matter) hasn't made Peebles any more resolute on whether or not to run. more ›

Don Peebles Still Not Giving Up the Ghost

Don Peebles Still Not Giving Up the Ghost

Over at WCP's Housing Complex this morning, Lydia DePillis correctly notes that despite accepting a speaking engagement at an upcoming D.C. Chamber of Commerce luncheon, erstwhile maybe-mayoral candidate Don Peebles hasn't been heard from in a month, leading most local politics watchers to ... pretty much forget about him. This guy can't still be thinking about running for mayor this late in the game, can he? more ›

Will Don Peebles Run for Mayor?

Will Don Peebles Run for Mayor?

Between the DCPS contract and ensuing is there or isn't there a surplus drama, the long-awaited testimony of Sinclair Skinner, the resurrection of the D.C. voting rights bill, and the mayoral campaign shifting into high gear, it's been a busy week for local politics. So busy, in fact, that one man who may yet still be about to step into the 2010 election fray has been almost forgotten: R. Donahue Peebles. more ›

What Will Gray and Peebles Decide?

What Will Gray and Peebles Decide?

This weekend may be decisive in the District's thus far muted 2010 mayoral race, as D.C. Council Chair Vincent Gray (D-Ward 7) and multimillionaire developer Don Peebles reportedly plan to meet one more time to hammer out which of the two of them will challenge Mayor Adrian Fenty in the September primary. While they've met before and we've surely heard our fair share of hints and rumors as to which one of them would run, Gray publicly announced this week that the decision would be made in the coming days. more ›

First No One, Now Everyone to Challenge Fenty

First No One, Now Everyone to Challenge Fenty

It was just last week that we highlighted the somewhat pathetic state of the District's mayoral contest -- after all, it's not really much of a competition when the incumbent has a war chest valued at $3.3 million and his two challengers can't even scrape together $3,000. more ›

Peebles Continues Broadsides Against Fenty

For a guy not running for mayor, Don Peebles still seems to be testing out his stump speech. more ›

It's All Still Up to Vince Gray

It's All Still Up to Vince Gray

For an election year, the District's mayoral contest remains in low-gear at best, and stalled at worst. Though there's been plenty of talk, plenty of polls and plenty of frustration with Mayor Adrian Fenty, no big-name contenders have yet stepped up to challenge him in September's primary. While that's still eight months off, Fenty's already got $3 million in the bank, a re-election website and a smattering of yard signs. more ›

Peebles Says He'll Run for Mayor if Gray Doesn't

Which challenger will it be? Not long after D.C. Council Chair Vince Gray and multimillionaire businessman Don Peebles were spotted having breakfast together on Wednesday morning, WUSA9's Bruce Johnson snags the latest Peebles interview. Peebles told Johnson that he's trying to get Gray to decide sooner rather than later -- by the end of the year, even -- whether he's going to run for mayor against Adrian Fenty. Because if Gray doesn't, Peebles says he will. more ›

Don Peebles Considering Run for Mayor

Don Peebles Considering Run for Mayor

Real estate mogul (and D.C. native) Don Peebles is thinking about giving Mayor Adrian Fenty a run for his money, according to a report this morning in the Washington Business Journal. Peebles told reporter Jonathan O'Connell that he will 'either run himself or support another candidate because of what he called "a continued pattern of a lack of oversight and accountabilty" under Fenty.' Harry Jaffe had previously reported the Peebles rumors in the Examiner, though the possibility that the businessman could run himself is a new development. more ›
