We're All More Drunk Than We've Been In Decades

There's no doubt that Washington has always been a city which loves its booze -- but that's even more true today, as research shows that people in America are drinking more alcohol than they have in decades. more ›

Literacity: Drinking, Historically

The District's is seeing something of a drinking revival these days, but it didn't have to be that way -- a new book finds that prior to prohibition, the District was a drinkers paradise. more ›

Red Palace Opens New Patio

Red Palace Opens New Patio

Is there anything more satisfying than knocking off work a few minutes early and heading to your local pub of choice to soak in a couple rays while downing an ice cold beverage? (Answer: no.) Now you can add the Red Palace to your outdoor drinking itinerary: the H Street bar/concert venue/burlesque joint opened an outdoor space yesterday. more ›

Jiffy Lube Live: No More Tailgating For You!

As if having one of the most easily mockable corporate names in the country, being remembered for hosting one of the most miserable concert experiences in the D.C. region's history and being generally in the middle of nowhere wasn't enough, Jiffy Lube Live has now said people are no longer allowed to tailgate in its parking lot. more ›

Reminder: SoberRide Available This Weekend

During the Christmas weekend, the combination of Metro running on a reduced schedule and D.C. not enforcing parking regulations might mean more people choosing to drive to and from various parties and bars. That said, we'd like to remind everyone that SoberRide, the program which provides free cab rides during various holidays throughout the year, is back in effect. Between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. today and tomorrow (as well as on New Year's Eve and Day), you can call 1-800-200-TAXI and a cab will be dispatched to your location with up to $30 in free fare on the meter. Last December, the program provided 3,178 rides around the region. more ›

PSA: Extra hour of drinking and sleep tonight

Tonight is when we fall back: the last day of daylight savings. We'll be turning back the clocks at 2 am. That means the bars are open an extra hour (but the Metro is not) and you get an extra hour of sleep. The downside is, of course, that it will start getting dark around 5 or 5:30. But, for those who wake up early: it probably won't be dark anymore. Enjoy your extra hour of carousing and sleep: you deserve it after last weekend! And P.S., DC Fire & EMS would like to remind you that with every clock shift, change the battery in your smoke detectors. more ›

Restoring Truthiness, One Drink At A Time

Restoring Truthiness, One Drink At A Time

If there is one aspect of the Stewart/Colbert rally which hasn't yet been examined under an electron microscope by the Washington and New York media, it's what part D.C. Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton will have in tomorrow's ceremonies. Sure, I imagine that she's one of the many "to be announced" in that schedule which leaked the other day -- but given Norton's long history of playful sparring (and her friendship) with Stephen Colbert, I had figured that there would be something bigger in store. Turns out I was kind of right: Norton has challenged Colbert to get his drink on. At The Passenger, no less! more ›

Worse Drinking Trend: 'Vodka Eyeballing' or 'Bro Icing'?

If you've yet to read this hilarious trend story from the Awl about a phenomenon called "Icing Your Bro" — a thing at least a handful of people across the country are doing that involves forcing a friend to get down on one knee and down a Smirnoff Ice as fast as they can — do take a look.

The rules are simple: hand a Smirnoff Ice (the warmer/more disgusting the flavor, the better) to a friend (your "bro"), and he must get down on one knee and chug the malt beverage, regardless of location and situational appropriateness. HOWEVER. If said friend happens to have a Smirnoff Ice on his person, then the bro who initiated the battle has to chug BOTH Ices.
According to this interview, Icing Bros has become popular in areas with a lot of Southern fraternity students and alumni, so it stands to reason this could have happened somewhere in D.C. Has anyone ever actually seen it done? more ›

Breaking: College Students, Cranky Old Man Disagree on Lifestyle Choices

Real World Crashers, Unite (Just Not At Wonderland)

Real World Crashers, Unite (Just Not At Wonderland)

If there's one complaint that I've heard more than any other about the Real World's imminent arrival in town this week, it's this: where are the alcoholic safe houses going to be for all of us that don't care about the true stories of seven strangers living together, preferring our own stories which don't involve having jobs handed to us and living in a Dupont Circle mansion? more ›

MCCVDMII MCXXDVCIV That Club Closed Down

MCCXXIII, a club whose name I type differently every time I write it, has closed, reports the Going-Out Gurus. Rents just got too high downtown. I wonder if that's true everywhere. Now that President Obama has taken office and started filling jobs with the people who helped him get there Clinton people, Stetson's on U Street has been restored to the glory it enjoyed during its heyday in the 90s. It might feel as though the Bush administration never happened on U Street, but you can be sure that isn't the mood in Georgetown. With Democrats ascendant, who will stay up on the right to drink those late-night shots? When will our young Republicans get back into the swing of things? more ›

Morning Roundup: More Murders Edition

Morning Roundup: More Murders Edition

Good morning, Washington, and welcome back to what will be a rather short work week for most of us. While airports and train stations are sure to be jammed with holiday travelers this week, the city's roads and metro system should be a little less crowded than normal as folks head out of town early to celebrate Thanksgiving. Less congestion may not make much of a difference in road safety, however, if a new survey... more ›

Pour Out a Forty for the Childe Harold The pilgrimage is at its end. After 40 years nestled on 20th street NW in Dupont Circle, the Childe Harold has closed its doors for good. A victim of increasing rents and lessors unwilling to negotiate, the Harold is one more example of how the face of Dupont Circle is ever-changing. The venerable institution held a lot of history, partly because of its ties to the music... more ›

Preview: Superdrag @ 9:30 Club

Remember "Who Sucked Out the Feeling"? The 1996 single, with a proper title of "Sucked Out," propelled Knoxville, Tennessee's Superdrag to a brief amount of alternative rock fame, back when it was still called alternative rock. The song, off their fantastic album Regretfully Yours, had a catchy British Invasion vibe, a yelled chorus with John Davis's voice cracking as he got to the "feeling" part, and a Buzz Bin video on MTV with the mop-topped... more ›

Morning Roundup: Having it Both Ways Edition

Good morning, Washington. It's Friday, and the city is still reacting to yesterday afternoon's announcement about how our new taxi meters are going to work. We already told you about the $4 flag drop, which many people are already saying is too high, and the fact that taxi roof lights will go on and off automatically to indicate whether a cab has a passenger, which everyone seems to agree is long overdue. One more thing... more ›

Free Bicycle Lights from WABA and DDOT

Now that it's getting darker earlier, bicyclists in the city need to be more careful about riding at night. But if you're like me, you've been putting off buying a safety light for oh, forever. So I'm planning on being first in line this Friday, November 2 at the Suntrust Plaza in Adams Morgan to snag free front and rear bike lights courtesy the Washington Area Bicyclist Association and DDOT. Metro to Crack Down on Eating and Drinking

Via WTOP's Adam Tuss, looks like Metro General Manager John Catoe is worrying about more than just budget shortfalls. Catoe says he's about to launch a new initiative to crack down on eating, drinking and chewing gum on Metro trains. "I have noticed (myself) and have received calls and letters that there has been an increase," says Metro General Manager John Catoe. Looks like many of you checked out some local sports, some roamed the city for some classic shots, and a whole slew of you who showed up for our Photographer's Meet Up at Solly's on Sunday.
