The Sunday Morning Post

The Sunday Morning Post

Good morning, Washington. Ten years ago today, the unfathomable happened. Iconic towers crumbled to dust, and the structure of a great military institution suffered partial collapse. Nearly 3,000 people died in merciless terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon on September 11, 2001. If not for the remarkable bravery of 40 heroes, it’s presumed many more would have perished in Washington. more ›

MWAA To Name Former Postmaster General As New Leader

The Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority is expected to name former Postmaster General John (Jack) Potter as its new leader. Sounds like a good choice -- as we all know, along with being a postmaster, Potter was also a general. And the job of a general is to by god get things done. (Feel free to start with that whole Dulles Rail thing, sir.) more ›

Man Found With 3.7 Pounds Of Heroin In Stomach At Dulles

Man Found With 3.7 Pounds Of Heroin In Stomach At Dulles

As the region's largest international airport, it's no surprise when travelers are caught trying to smuggle drugs in and out of Dulles International Airport in creative ways. (People trying to get cocaine past inspectors inside dried soup packets and fully-cooked chickens come to mind.) But there are still those who attempt to get around the watchdogs via more conventional methods. more ›

Fairfax Board Picks Metro Station Names For Dulles Extension

Fairfax Board Picks Metro Station Names For Dulles Extension

Today, the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors approved names for some of the stations along the under-construction Dulles Corridor Metrorail Project. The names still have to go to the WMATA board for approval -- and while they generally meet the requirements, those who aren't fans of long, dash interrupted names will probably be disappointed with the selections of the board. Bring on the hyphens! more ›

Man Charged With Recording Upskirt Videos at Dulles

An employee at a Borders bookstore located inside Dulles International Airport has been charged with taping upskirt videos of women inside the airport. NBCWashington reports that the Airports Authority began investigating 26-year-old David Solomon this summer after a woman reported that Solomon, carrying a telephoto lens, was following them too closely on escalators. Even creepier: police searched the townhouse where Solomon was living and found 700 similar videos -- plus some child pornography and a guide to shooting upskirts -- which dated back to a previous charge on a similar crime while Solomon was at the University of Virginia. more ›

That Won't Leave Much Room For Toiletries

That Won't Leave Much Room For Toiletries

Airport customs inspector has to be one of the worst jobs out there, right? After all, there's so little glory in it: you're at the front of the line when threats pops up, and an inconvenience to people when things are calmer. Not only that, but the most "exciting" part about the job is likely dealing with bizarre situations like this, which happened at Dulles International Airport this month. more ›

Here's To Exacerbating A Casual Fear of Flying

The Post's Martin Weil reported late last night that a Brussels-bound United Airlines flight had to return to Dulles after one of its tires blew during takeoff. A missing section of runway pavement was deemed the culprit, after debris -- whatever was left of the tire, one assumes -- was found on the ground after the plane had gotten into the air around 6 p.m. According to The Aviation Herald, the plane burned fuel to reduce its weight before turning back to land at IAD, two and half hours after takeoff. (The flight was canceled, which I'm sure went over well in the terminal.) Airport officials closed the troublesome runway to fix it today. With this weekend's gusty weather, it sounds like takeoffs and landings at Dulles and other airports have been a real adventure; now if you'll excuse me, I have to go reassure myself all over again that air travel is totally safe. more ›

Holy Shit, Zero Gravity!

Constantly I am arguing with friends that Dulles International Airport is the coolest airport even though it's much farther from Northwest than Washington National Airport because Dulles was designed by Eero Saarinen, who is the boss of all bosses. There is no question in my mind that had Saarinen's original vision been realized -- a vision that included lounges in the awesome people movers that some DMV residents mistake for being not awesome -- there would be no debate. Instead, some of his most distinctive features are being phased out in favor of the AeroTrain, which does not even have the decency to be called the EeroTrain. In any event, the Washington Post reports on a development that is sure to nudge Dulles over the top -- while emphasizing the spirit of Saarinen's design. The Zero Gravity Corp. is now offering, no joke, zero-gravity simulation flights from Dulles. What could be more appropriate to the architect's swooping Dulles design and aerial aesthetic? I like National's Terminal A as much as the next guy, but now I can add untoward Newtonian constraints to my list of complaints about that airport. more ›

Dulles Airport's New People Mover Debuts on Tuesday

Dulles Airport's New People Mover Debuts on Tuesday

Dulles International Airport showed off its brand new AeroTrain people mover system this morning, and WTOP was kind enough to upload some video of the system to YouTube so we could all check it out (see below). The AeroTrain launches its first full day serving the public on Tuesday, approximately $1.5 billion and nearly a decade after the Dulles expansion project originally began. The opening of the AeroTrain was also pushed back several months due to testing delays. more ›

One of the dogs reportedly got loose from its kennel and attacked the other, and after officers were unable to break up the fight with pepper spray, they ended up shooting them. Police are investigating the incident. more ›
