Shaw Interim Library Branch Finally Open

Shaw Interim Library Branch Finally Open

The Watha T. Daniel/Shaw Interim Library branch finally opened on Saturday, a full six months after the trailer first appeared on Rhode Island Ave. NW. Residents and neighborhood blogs had expressed frustration with the series of delays that prevented the temporary branch from opening as scheduled at the end of June, almost three years after the original branch was closed. Delays in getting electricity installed in the structure, and problems with the library's computer... more ›

Tower Bids Final, Low-Priced Farewell

Tower Bids Final, Low-Priced Farewell

For once, we could afford to buy a CD at Tower Records. Unfortunately, the pickings were slim and the occasion sad. In October the national record store chain succumbed to the pressure of its online competitors, selling the assets from its 85 stores to a liquidation firm and marking the end of a generation of music buyers who preferred to curiously browse through unknown bands at the advice of knowledgeable, if surly clerks. Since then,... more ›

Revolution Records Closing, Hoping to Move

Revolution Records Closing, Hoping to Move

Another local record store is closing, hopefully temporarily, as Revolution Records in Van Ness (or North Cleveland Park) will shut its doors on September 3rd. A nice little spot with good selection and neat listening rooms, we're sad to see it go. However, the plan is that the store will not join DCCD in being gone forever, as co-owner Nayan Bhula said they're looking for a new location in or near the District. more ›

It's Legal If You Get It For Free

DCist really loves its readers, and if we're not giving away stuff like Editors tickets or DVDs of Lewis Black in all his white-hot anger, we want to point you to places that will give you the free goodies themselves. You know, land of the free; freedom, use it or lose it; freedom rock, turn it up; etc. etc. Anyway, we have the dope on two free food items for you today. Everyone, say hello... more ›

The Local Roots of the U.S. vs. Ghana Game

The Local Roots of the U.S. vs. Ghana Game

Today all eyes are on the U.S. squad in Germany, where they will square off against a powerful and confident Ghana in what may be their make-or-break match of the World Cup. And according to Sports Illustrated, it was a Ghanaian businessman in the District that helped the U.S. team prepare -- maybe unwittingly -- for what could be today's tough game. How so? States the article, which includes an interview with assistant U.S. coach... more ›

The Upside of Anger

The Upside of Anger

You're pretty angry, D.C. Pissy, opinionated and infuriated. Good job. We asked you to provide your best Lewis Black-style rants about life in Washington, and you came through. We heard about sour CVS employees, transit woes and the city government — and of course there was an entry or two about us (we love you guys, too). But in the end there can be only three winners, because that's how many Lewis Black DVDs we... more ›

West Wing Series Finale Tonight

West Wing Series Finale Tonight

NBC's political drama The West Wing comes to a close tonight at 8pm. While we haven't taken the time to plan elaborate viewing parties, a couple of us at DCist are feeling slightly nostalgic about the series. Since NBC wouldn't fork over the dollars for an hour long retrospective of the shows highlights, we decided to chime in with our own picks. Keep reading for our picks of the best episodes of the series and... more ›

Taking Your Rage Out the Safe Way

Taking Your Rage Out the Safe Way

Your computer freezes. Your mouse barely works. The program you need to run immediately to get that report done just won't load. You press ctrl-alt-del, manually reset your machine, and just when you think the problem is solved, there it is: the blue screen of death. more ›
