Mystics Eke Out Top Conference Spot, One Game Left

Mystics Eke Out Top Conference Spot, One Game Left

Though their #1 ranking may be on a technicality, the Washington Mystics snatched the top spot in the Eastern Conference with a thrilling win over the New York Liberty Friday night. In tense fashion, the win wasn't decisive. The Mystics leaked away a 12-point lead earlier in the game until New York moved ahead 73-74 in the ending minutes. But a final layup by Lindsey Harding with 8.8 seconds left, in a less than pristinely executed play, was just enough to earn the Mystics control over their playoff destiny. more ›

Tickets start at $30, maybe even less on Craigslist. When else are you going... more ›

Caps Briefing: Isn't It Ironic

Earlier this season, the Caps ranked first in the entire NHL - for about an hour, before the Ottawa Senators reclaimed the lead. Yesterday the Caps were tied for last place overall, and had spent two whole days in sole possession of last place in the Eastern Conference. The Senators, meanwhile, remained on top of the league with thirteen wins and one loss. Last night, with three of their top five wingers out injured, the... more ›

D.C. United Out of Touch, Out of Time

D.C. United Out of Touch, Out of Time

For 25 minutes, D.C. United attacked the Chicago Fire unrelentingly. They poured all of their efforts forward, creating chance after chance. In the process, they scored the two goals they needed to advance to the Eastern Conference finals. Unfortunately, United's disjointed play during the preceding 70 minutes allowed Chicago to tally two goals of their own, earning them the 2-2 tie, the 3-2 series victory on aggregate, and a ticket to the next round.... more ›

In 5 total playoff games against the Fire, D.C. has yet to score a goal. United will need to find net if they wish to move on... more ›

United Emerge Victorious

Sunday afternoon D.C. United went toe-to-toe with the New England Revolution in a battle for supremacy of the Eastern Conference, and arguably the entire MLS. The match did not disappoint. It was a competitive affair in which each side took turns playing from behind before United dealt the knockout blow and cruised to victory. By most standards, it was a fantastic match. Flash forward to last night. D.C. United is facing a Real Salt... more ›

United Quell Revolution, 4-2

Yesterday afternoon's contest between D.C. United and the New England Revolution carried several levels of significance. With six games remaining for United and most of MLS, teams are becoming increasingly desperate to capture the three point bounty of each remaining game in the scramble for playoff spots. The Revolution came into RFK Stadium as the toughest foe remaining on United's schedule. The game constituted the last time United would face a sure-fire playoff team.... more ›

Emilio's Blast Propels United Over Galaxy, 1-0

The 46,686 spectators that packed into RFK stadium got their money's worth last night. The United faithful saw a dominating performance that vaulted their team into second place in the Eastern Conference of MLS. Those hoping to see soccer star and global icon David Beckham also left pleased: LA's five million dollar man played the final 20 minutes, making his Major League Soccer debut. Though United's finishing was spotty, they enjoyed the great majority... more ›

Sold Out RFK Awaits Beckham, Galaxy

The Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Beckham Circus has arrived. Forty five thousand spectators will pack into RFK this evening to witness the production. All eyes will be on English mega-star David Beckham, but his performance will likely be relegated to a side show, as an ankle injury will limit him to sub minutes (if any). Even so, the main event of the night is sure to be exciting enough to keep the third-biggest... more ›

Caps Briefing: Monster Mash

Caps Briefing: Monster Mash

On Friday night The Hershey Bears were torn apart by Bulldogs in an embarrassing 3-0 home loss in game one of the Calder Cup Finals. After putting on a convincing impression of "the big bad wolf" in the Eastern Conference Finals, the Bears got burned at the beginning of the big dance by reclusive nineteen year old named Carey. Of course, the night's events did not warp into a Stephen King novel. The Bears faced... more ›

United Rocked by K.C.

United Rocked by K.C.

After weeks on the road in hostile conditions, United had been looking forward to Saturday night's MLS home opener for quite some time. The boisterous 22,358 in attendance were determined to make United's homecoming a pleasant one. The driving rain and potent Kansas City Wizards offense were not. The Wizards took advantage of United's defensive lapses with polished finishing to claim a 4-2 victory. It took only 3 minutes for the Wizards to deliver... more ›

Wizards Face Tough Stretch

Wizards Face Tough Stretch

What was once an entertaining season for the Washington Wizards has quickly gone down the proverbial drain so fast most people are afraid to ask "What's next?" In the last 12 days, the team has lost Caron Butler and Gilbert Arenas for the season, lost the third seed in the Eastern Conference playoff picture, lost the Southeast Division crown to the Miami Heat and also lost six in a row, with four of those... more ›

Caps Briefing: Anatomy of a Yardsale

Caps Briefing: Anatomy of a Yardsale

With one week left until the trade deadline, and the second-worst record in the Eastern Conference, the Capitals are doubtlessly looking to make trades and receive value for players who aren't planning to return next year. Their biggest commodities are forwards Dainius Zubrus and Richard Zednik. Both players are big, strong veterans who can chip in a fair number of points. Both have also been to the Stanley Cup Finals, which is something teams look... more ›

Save the Date: United vs. Beckham FC, August 9

D.C. United announced its MLS schedule yesterday, and we'll cut to the chase: you have exactly 183 days before David Beckham comes to Washington. He'll be here on August 9 for a Thursday night game, but unless you're planning to buy a full season ticket package, tickets won't be available until July 2. And that goes for half-season and flex plans too -- the August 9 match against Beckham's LA Galaxy (formerly known as... more ›

Jamison to Undergo MRI on Knee

Jamison to Undergo MRI on Knee

The Wizards 104-99 win over the Detroit Pistons last night at the Verizon Center evened the season series to 2-2, solidified D.C.'s grip on the top spot in the Eastern Conference, and has rendered it extremely probable that Eddie Jordan will coach the East's All-Star Team in Vegas. Good news all around then, except for the small matter of Antawn Jamison re-injuring the left knee he tweaked playing Boston on January 20th. Jamison suffered... more ›

A Surge Everyone Can Love

A Surge Everyone Can Love

It probably won't bring security to Baghdad, but last night brought some surge news that can generate bipartisan support inside the Beltway: Gilbert Arenas has pulled off a surprise come-from-behind victory over Vince Carter to be the second Eastern Conference starting guard in the NBA All-Star Game. Just two weeks ago, Carter led Arenas by 214,460 votes and his lead appeared so insurmountable that we spent some time yesterday afternoon writing a draft post... more ›

Wizards Lose Late Lead, Prevail In OT

Wizards Lose Late Lead, Prevail In OT

After last Friday's win in Orlando and upcoming games this week against the Phoenix Suns and Detroit Pistons, Saturday night's game at the Verizon Center against the banged up Boston Celtics had all the characteristics of a trap game. The Celtics were without Paul Pierce, Wally Szczerbiak and Tony Allen, among others, and losers of seven of their last eight games. Should be easy pickings, right? Well, almost. The Wiz built up a big... more ›

Gilbert's Swag Is Still Phenomenal

Gilbert's Swag Is Still Phenomenal

Can it get any better for Gilbert Arenas right now? The Wiz may have lost at Toronto yesterday, but if you've been paying attention, that was almost inevitable after the week Gilbert (and the team) just had. It started early last week when Arenas was named Player of the Month for December. It continued on Wednesday when Agent Hibachi scored the game winner as the buzzer sounded against budding rival Milwaukee. On Friday he... more ›

Wizards Hope to Break Losing Streak With Assist From Wade's Dentist

Wizards Hope to Break Losing Streak With Assist From Wade's Dentist

Of all the rivalries in recent sports history, few have been as one-sided as the Wizards' struggles against their Southeast Division antagonists, the Miami Heat. Indeed, it's not clear you can even call it a rivalry, since in actual rivalries both sides sometimes win. D.C.'s hoopsters, by contrast, have been losing for a long time now. Sixteen straight games, including a four-game sweep in the 2006 Eastern Conference Semifinals, and sweeps of the regular season... more ›

Wizards Victimized by Lady Luck?

Wizards Victimized by Lady Luck?

Written by DCist contributor Matthew Yglesias Wizards fans in the Verizon Center for last Sunday's overtime loss to the Nets could smell victory as the Nets were forced to try and in-bound the ball facing a three-point deficit with only 2.7 seconds remaining on the regulation clock. Odor turned to palpable taste as guard Vince Carter launched a long shot on a short-arced trajectory that couldn't possibly fall in. And, indeed, the shot slammed into... more ›

Wizards Trends Emerge Over Week One

Wizards Trends Emerge Over Week One

Written by DCist contributor Matthew Yglesias The good news for the Wizards after the NBA's first week of action is that they're scoring the most points in the Eastern Conference. They're even outscoring their opponents, albeit narrowly, by an average of 0.3 points per game. Unfortunately, they're also giving up the second-most points in the East, and losing two out of their three first games. Somewhat remarkably, both Washington and their opponents are scoring in... more ›

Wizards Seek Revenge in Season Opener

Wizards Seek Revenge in Season Opener

Written by DCist contributor Matthew Yglesias. The scheduling gods decreed that for tonight's season-opening game, the Wizards face off against LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers, the very team that sent the Wiz packing from the playoffs last year in a heart-breaking six game defeat. Despite the superficial difference in records (50-32 for Cleveland, 42-40 for Washington), the two squads were extremely closely matched last season in terms of point differential and expected wins. The... more ›

Wizards Season Preview

Wizards Season Preview

Don't look now, but the NBA season is just two weeks away. When last we saw the Washington Wizards, LeBron James was carving up their defense and talking Gilbert Arenas out of winning games from the line. The Wiz may not have made as much noise this offseason as last, but sure-handed (and recently re-signed) General Manager Ernie Grunfeld did make some moves. They include: 1) Re-upping coach Eddie Jordan for three more years.... more ›
