Candidates in next Tuesday's special election to fill two open D.C. Council seats have collectively raised over $1 million in the course of the campaign. Voters will chose council members for Wards 4 and 7, after those positions were left empty by Mayor Adrian Fenty and at-large Council Chairman Vincent Gray. Voters in D.C. Public Schools' Second District will also elect a school board representative. In Ward 4, ANC Commissioner Muriel Bowser leads the pack...
Over $1 Million in Play for Special Elections
Kerry Concedes, Bush Will Speak Today
The Post is reporting that President Bush may give a victory speech today, regardless of whether Kerry concedes defeat. From the Post:
Bush Wins (?), GOP Retains Control of Congress
2:15 a.m. ... It all hung on Ohio or it may still hang on Ohio. Some media outlets have put Ohio in the Bush column, but it appears that the Kerry camp hasn't given up all hope yet. Ohio's 20 electoral votes may be up in the air for days. There are still ballots to be counted. But right now, it appears that George W. Bush will be re-elected and Sen. John Kerry of...

Afternoon Elections Update
Since we're still a few hours from any elections returns, here's a roundup of what's going on across the nation.. >> Gothamist reports that there have been long lines to vote. Similar reports have been echoed on LAist, SFist and Chicagoist. Chicagoist editor Margaret Lyons even relates her voting experience this morning, which involved slipping and falling in front of her polling place. >> Chicagoist also writes about Celeste Wroblewski, a Chicago mom who started...
Blogger Predictions
No matter who comes out on top after the election is all over, we know who the real winner of Insanity 2004 is: the bloggers. And given that most blogs are the bastard progeny of political punditry and partisan hysteria, we figured, who better to predict the outcome of it all? So we searched around and found the predictions of a few blogger elite who were brave enough to put their money where their mouths...
Election Imbibing
It's Election Night. The thousands of polls; the elevation of towns like Wausau, Wis., to the national stage; the negative natterings of the nabobs -- it all comes down to this. Millions will be glued to the TV to (hopefully) watch the media put an endcap on what has seemed like the longest election campaign ever. And whether they come from Fox News to CNN, the great white board of Tim Russert at NBC to...
Who Are You Watching?
Major networks across the board will sacrifice a crucial night of the November sweeps period in the name of civic duty. Election Night coverage starts at 8 p.m. on most broadcast networks and presumably continues on through the wee hours of the morning. Here's your handy-dandy guide to Election Night viewing. ABC News: Peter Jennings anchors Vote 2004 with the help of George Stephanopoulos and Terry Moran. Former Salon.com writer Jake Tapper will have regular...
Out and About This Morning
As we've mentioned, lines to vote today have been forcasted to be long, and indeed they are. This photo here is of the voting site at the 2nd District Police headquarters on Idaho Avenue. Over at the International Union of Operating Engineers hall in Glover Park, the line to vote stretched down Calvert Street nearly to the western gate to the vice president's house at the Naval Observatory. (Here's the Post's morning update on area voting.)
Though Lines Are Long, Don't Forget to Vote
The Post indicates that lines to vote today are going to be long. Although DCist is not in the business of endorsing candidates, we can encourage you to vote. Here's how you can do it, assuming you're registered.
Watching the Senate
While the race for the White House will dominate the Election Night coverage, the future of the Senate hangs in the balance tomorrow as voters in a handful of states will determine who will control the chamber. But the Republicans seem that they will likely hold on to their majority, though it will be very slim. South Dakota: After the Bush-Kerry matchup, all eyes will be on the Mount Rushmore State. There, former Rep. John...

So when you're watching news coverage on Election Night, we'd like to point you to a few interesting races that will be worth watching. For the time being...
Preparing for Election Day
With the election this Tuesday, the lives of many people in D.C. are particularly busy. Whether you're working 20 hour days because of the election or a curious bystander, we're ready to help here at DCist.
Wacky Things Happen Halloween Eve
Saturday, after the fog lifted, the weather was warm and nice, but with Halloween and a heated election back to back, being out and about provided its interesting moments. When DCist was traveling to Barracks Row to pick up our costume for Saturday night (DCist photo above), we were traveling on a Blue Line train heading toward Capitol Hill. As the train approached the Capitol South station, a group of Lyndon LaRouche supporters came through...
Things Going By on a Foggy Foggy Night
Just a few days left before the hard-to-read national elections, the weather had its way setting an eerie, spooky tone for the Halloween weekend. Even Osama bin Laden made an unexpected appearance as the fog rolled in and became entrenched Friday night. But then if things couldn't get more peculiar, they did. Around 3:45 a.m., DCist was at Cafe Romeo's, a late-night pizza and sandwich place, located next to Holy Rood Cemetery on Wisconsin...
Bush Supporters on the Move
DCist was a bit puzzled when a tipster told us that a "preppy looking white kid" with a Bush-Cheney button was riding down the sidewalk very near the Bush-Cheney campaign headquarters in Arlington riding a Segway people mover. This episode unfolded on Clarendon Boulevard at around 3:45 p.m. yesterday.
Elections Roundup
Tuesday's elections are fast approaching. President Bush and Sen. Kerry are flying around the country to solidify their respective bases, Congressional candidates are going into the home stretches of their campaigns, and here in the nation's capital, with many politicos away hob-nobbing with constituents, we're trying to plan our Election Night outings around town.
Poll: Chef Geoff Gaining on Bush
DCSOB points out a poll showing Ralph Nader only five points behind President Bush in the District of Columbia. Massachusetts Sen. John Kerry is way ahead. DCist would like to point out that although Kerry is way ahead, Chef Geoff Tracy, husband of NBC's Norah O'Donnell, is gaining on President Bush. When we checked on Monday, the Georgetown graduate was only down by 10-15 votes at the 13th Street Chef Geoff's. We don't know if...
