>> Tabi Bonney is one of D.C.'s most notable artists right now, and he'll be using his clout to advance the effort of voting rights for the District. He'll be performing on the west steps of the Capitol with several other artists, including Kyonte. Free, 5:30 p.m.

>> Twenty-one year old pianist Laura Izibor comes from Dublin and is being dubbed as the "next big thing." She'll be performing at Bohemian Caverns for her D.C. debut. $5, 8 p.m.

>> It's been a while, but "Beat Grinder" is back. Ten producers will battle at Liv over three rounds as this month's show tips its hat to Gil Scott-Heron. Grap Luva will serve as the host while Damu the Fudgemonk and Underdog the DJ will be on the turntables. $7, 9 p.m.

>> Local vocalist Afi Soul will be performing at the Red Lounge along with Jamilla and the D.C. All Stars. Free, 9 p.m.

>> Baltimore's Fertile Ground will be taking part in the Duke Ellington Jazz Festival. They'll be performing at the 9:30 Club. $25, 6 p.m.

>> Jaguar Wright has always been neo-soul's bad girl, and that's been a large part of her appeal. The Philly native will be at The Republic for her D.C. engagement. $20, 8 p.m.

>> Knee Deep is the headlining act but Janelle Monae (pictured) is also on the bill. Monae has been praised by the likes of Erykah Badu and Sean "Diddy" Combs, who signed her to his Bad Boy label. She'll be at Iota in Arlington. $10, 8:30 p.m.

>> Charlotte native Calvin Richardson will be at the Birchmere in Alexandria. $35, 7 p.m.

>> Following in her father's footsteps, Lalah Hathaway is a singer with a great deal of soul. She'll be at Wolf Trap's Filene Center in Vienna. $25-$40, 8 p.m.

A blaring fire alarm across the street, loss of power, and brief visit from MPD all preceded Kissey Asplund's performance at the newly opened Columbia Heights art/community space, BloomBars, Saturday night. Despite these potential setbacks, in addition to high humidity, Asplund held her own during her short set, where she was aided by DJ Apex and visual artist Shantell Martin.

>> Ann Arbor, Michigan-based band Nomo will bring their highly regarded Afrobeat-influenced sound to the Rock and Roll Hotel. Opening for them will be Funk Ark, Deep Sang and DJ Meistro. $12, 8 p.m.

     

What is it about Bergen, Norway? The city of 250,000 is the home to numerous bands, including Kings of Convenience, Annie, Röyksopp, Sondre Lerche, and Datarock. The latter, a group of red jumpsuited goofballs, played Saturday at the Rock and Roll Hotel and did not disappoint.

>> This edition of "The Beatdown" will be held at Geisha and feature the production prowess of Justus League member Khrysis (pictured). Joining him will be his Away Team compatriot, Sean Boog, as well as Kount Fif, Nick Da 1Da, Midas and DJ Nfinit. $10, 8 p.m.

>> Kicking off the Live! on Woodrow Wilson Plaza series, renowned reggae act Third World will be performing their hits, like "Now That We Found Love". Free, 12 p.m.

>> Twin Cities-based indie hip-hop stars Eyedea & Abilities are on the road again and will be at Rock and Roll Hotel as a part of the "Appetite for Distraction" tour. They'll be joined by local acts Educated Consumers and Math Panda. $12, 8 p.m.

>> Portland, Oregon-based indie soulstress Liv Warfield has been garnering positive reviews ever since the 2006 release of her debut album, Embrace Me. She'll be performing two shows at Blues Alley this evening. $20, 8 p.m. and 10 p.m.

>> Minneapolis hip-hop act Atmosphere will be at the 9:30 Club to support their recently released album, When Life Gives You Lemons You Paint That Shit Gold. If you're still looking to go, too bad. The show sold out and typical spots to sell extra tickets, like Craigslist, are coming up dry so hanging outside 9:30's door hoping to catch an unloaded ticket might be the best option. 7:30 p.m.

Since DCist last spoke to Muhsinah back in January, she's been in almost constant motion. In fact, this interview interrupted her work on a track for a London-based artist.

>> Dallas native Geno Young is no stranger to D.C., having spent time here as a Howard student. His talents have led to a role producing and songwriting for Erykah Badu, among other artists. He’ll be at Bohemian Caverns for two shows along with local soul star Wayna, as a part of the Rhythm and Soul series. $15, 8 and 10 p.m.

For our purposes, the definition of hip-hop will be broader than it's typically constructed, and will include R&B, soul, certain electronic, or whatever else deemed appropriate by the author.
