It’s pretty remarkable how much one performance can change your perception of an artist. Take Patrick Wolf. Prior to his first ever show in the District this past Monday night, we might have classified him as a musician whose sensibilities lie somewhere between electronic music and Baroque pop. We now know, however, that while stuttering, glitchy beats sometimes take precedence on his albums, the heart and soul of his songs lie in the string arrangements.

Despite a percieved rockist inclination, the generally philosophy of DCist Music is put best by Natasha Lyonne’s grammatically challenged disco queen in Detroit Rock City: “Good tunes is good tunes.” In that spirit this writer tests the waters of D.C.’s electronic music with Trifecta and their newest release: Laugh Now but One Day We’ll Be in Charge.

Aligning Minds create soundscapes. Their atmospheric music evokes isolated locales, rainy nights in the city, frost covered fields in the early morning sun. At the show we caught, Aligning Minds didn't need to create a locale so much as to enhance it -- the work was already done for them in the leaking and chilly fourth floor at Love on a drizzly Wednesday night. Introduced to this electronic live performance duo by innovative local promoter...

Known for her creative and daring works of modern dance, choreographer Maida Withers' latest work, Thresholds Crossed, is performed by a collection of U.S. and Russian dancers. Colored by the implied humor of Cold War era propaganda art, the work can be described as a unique fusion of dance, art, and political statement. It delves into the human rights issues that link, and belong to, the United States and Russia. A multi-media performance, it combines dance with electronic music by Steven Hilmy, and experimental vocals/cello music by Audrey Chen, along with a visual installation that features, among others, images of gulags.

The small crowd at Iota on Sunday knew exactly why they were there, and it wasn’t for Easter cocktails garnished with peeps. They came for the Minnesota-based eclectic rock outfit Cloud Cult, who are a rare presence in these parts. And it’s too bad that they are a rare presence because they put on one helluva show.
