According to the Georgetown Dish, former D.C. Mayor Anthony Williams officially endorsed Vince Gray for mayor during a fundraiser on Saturday. Williams' mother had been on the Gray bandwagon since, well, day one. But it sounds like with eight days to go before the general election, Williams finally felt comfortable with giving the presumptive Mayor his blessing. Williams had endorsed current Mayor Adrian Fenty for reelection back in July. I guess it's not a totally empty gesture, considering the campaign to write-in Fenty that Gray is facing -- after all, Mayor Bow Tie did win reelection in 2002 on the back of write-in votes.
Way To Go Out On A Limb There
I'd Be Outraged, But, You Know, Puppies
This seems like the most appropriate thing we could possibly post on the final Friday afternoon before the Democratic primary: the much-anticipated results of the Washington Humane Society's puppy mayoral endorsement. Totally unfulfilling, yet oh so adorable.
Fenty Asks White House for Obama Endorsement
In jeopardy of losing his job come next Tuesday, Mayor Adrian Fenty is pulling out all the stops to win a second term in office. All of them.
WaPo Endorses Fenty for Re-Election
In the Not Surprising At All Department, the Post has published its endorsement of Mayor Adrian Fenty for September's Democratic primary.
Former Mayor Williams Endorses Fenty, Graham
Councilmember Jack Evans now has some company in the "we backed Linda Cropp in 2006, only to find ourselves on the side of Adrian Fenty this year" camp. During a back-slapping ceremony at the DCUSA complex this morning, former Mayor Anthony Williams cannonballed into this year's mayoral race, throwing his weight behind incumbent Mayor Adrian Fenty and fellow bow-tie enthusiast Jim Graham. But, wait! What about Williams' mother, who has hosted fundraisers and worked for challenger Vincent Gray's campaign? Oh, the drama! (Really, Tony Williams and his mom? Sheesh, between that and Gray's fence, we're kind of scraping the bottom of the barrel when it comes to scandals around here, aren't we?)
BARRY APPROVES OF SAME-SEX MARRIAGE
The Washington Blade reports that Ward 8 Council member Marion Barry has come out -- in support of same-sex marriage, that is. The mayor-for-life made his stance known for the first time last week at a meeting of the Gertrude Stein Democratic Club, the city's most powerful LGBT political group. During the meeting, Barry responded to a question about same-sex marriage saying, "I don’t think you should make that question a litmus test. But if a bill like that were to come up, I would vote for it." Barry received the club's endorsement for the September 9 primary.
Marion Barry Endorses Obama
Marc Fisher reports that Ward 8 Council member Marion Barry plans to endorse Sen. Barack Obama in next week's Democratic presidential primary. The controversial "mayor for life" had been a longtime supporter of President Bill Clinton, but told Fisher that he has concluded that Sen. Hillary Clinton represents older and less flexible forces in the Democratic party.
