Still not sure how much you'll be paying for your daily commute come June 27, when WMATA's massive new fare hikes go into effect? Metro's Trip Planner can now tell you.
WMATA Trip Planner Updated With Coming Fare Hikes
Details of the Metro Fare Hike Agreement Updated
We've finally got the details on the fare hike agreement reached by Metro's Board of Directors that we reported earlier. The following fare changes are expected to go into effect on June 27, pending final approval of the 2011 budget on June 24.
Metro Board Reaches Agreement on Fare Hikes
Word coming out of today's Metro board meeting, which ended up going into a closed-door executive session "lunch break" for the bulk of the afternoon, is that an agreement is in place to raise fares. CORRECTION: This afternoon's negotiations took place not during an official executive session, but rather an informal meal break. See GGW for more on that.
Metro Fare Increases Coming Down the Pipe
Metro fares are slated to go up 10 cents across the board (with the exception of senior fares, which will only go up 5 cents) starting this Sunday, Feb. 28, thanks to a recent board of directors vote. But that's just the beginning. Come July, riders will almost surely be facing a much larger fare hike, thanks to a looming $189 million budget shortfall in FY2011.
Metro Board Approves 10-Cent Fare Hike
The Metro board has voted to approve a temporary 10-cent, across the board fare hike.
Riders Urge Metro Board to Choose Fare Hikes Over Cuts
Metro's board members heard testimony from well over 100 people Wednesday night as they prepare to vote today on how to close an additional $16 million of the transit agency's 2010 budget gap.
Metro Sets Public Hearing on 10 Cent Fare Increase, Service Cuts
Rumors flew wildly Wednesday night that Metro's board would decide today to go ahead and make major service cuts in an effort to trim its budget deficit. Among the proposals: 30-minute headways on most Metrorail lines after 9:30 p.m. But the reality of today's board meeting, as the Washington Post details, was that members were hard pressed to push forward on major service cuts, instead preferring a plan that would raise all fares by 10 cents almost immediately.
WMATA Seeks Public Input on Budget Shortfall Tonight
Metro is once again facing a budget crunch (in the form of a predicted $100 million shortfall) and thinking about raising fares, but this time it's changing tactics just a bit. Instead of soliciting rider input at the end of the process, as Lena Sun points out in the Post, this year they're talking to customers at the beginning. And tonight marks the first public forum on Metro’s proposed 2011 budget.
Next VRE Fare Increase to Be More Modest
Last month, we told you how the Virginia Railway Express commuter lines were discussing raising their fares by 15 percent in January, even though they had just raised them 3 percent across the board in July. Well today WTOP reports that VRE CEO Dale Zehner will this week recommend a fare increase of only 7 percent. Given that the reasons for the increase are similar to problems facing transit and commuter rail agencies across the country, like high fuel costs and aging trains, the 7 percent hike seems a lot easier to swallow than a 15 percent one. Keep in mind, though, that originally VRE was talking about two big rounds of increases: 15 percent in January and then possibly another 10 percent in July, 2009. With this new plan to raise fares by only 7 percent in January, it seems even more likely that a second increase could be in store next summer.
Signs of the Times: New Metro Fares Posted in Stations
WMATA has released the above photo of Metro employee Fred Kenley installing new fare charts today at the Judiciary Square station. The transit agency’s first fare hike in four years takes effect this Sunday, January 6. You can calculate how much your commute will cost now online.
Suburban Metro Riders Get a Good Deal
Make sure to check out this post by former DCist editor Rob Goodspeed over at Goodspeed Update about the costs of a Metrorail trip per mile. Contrary to the claims of former WMATA Board Member T. Dana Kauffman that the new Metro fare structure is a “raw deal” for suburban commuters, Goodspeed finds that most suburban Metro commuters "continue to enjoy costs substantially lower than driving" and shows that commuters with longer trips actually save more per mile than those with shorter ones.
Public Comments on Taxi Meter Change Due Jan. 7
The people behind DC Residents for Reasonable Taxi Fares, the web site that's been calling for Mayor Fenty to make some significant revisions to his taxi meter proposals, have sent out a last-minute push for residents to send like-minded input to the District. The deadline for public comment set by the D.C. Taxicab Commission on the proposed move from zones to time and distance meters, which Mayor Fenty has said would include a $4.50$4.00 flag drop, are due Monday, Jan. 7.
New Metro Fares Online
Via Dr. Gridlock, it looks like WMATA has put all its new fares into their web site so that customers can figure out how much they'll have to pay come January 6.
WMATA Looks at New Rosslyn Metro Entrance
The Metro board didn't spend their entire day on the fare hike issue Thursday. They also voted to spend $450,000 to develop a proposal to add an eastern entrance to the Rosslyn station.
Morning Roundup: Hikes and Housing Edition
It's Friday, Washington, and reactions are still rolling in to Metro's approval of its largest fare hikes ever. We all knew this was coming, but we're curious to hear if any of our readers actually plan to make changes to their commuting habits come January 6, when the increases will go into effect. Do you think you'll ride Metro any less, or finally make the leap to using SmarTrip? Let us know in the comments.
Morning Roundup: Ducks in a Row Edition
Good morning, Washington. We'll be standing by for a good chunk of the day to see what the Metro Board decides to do about the proposed fare hike - the Board is meeting at 11 a.m. for a session that is expected to produce a final vote on the fare hikes, which could go into effect as soon as January. Board members have indicated they would likely pass a fare hike that is slightly less than the current proposal.
Morning Roundup: Transit Apathy Edition
Good morning, Washington. Not too upset about the coming Metro fare hike, are we? WJLA is reporting that only four people showed up to last night's hearing on the measure. Of course, the meeting was held way out in Reston and was only the first of six opportunities that Metro riders will have to voice their opinion on the price increase. Maybe you're just biding your time. Tax Scandal Grows Even Bigger: This is...

All six hearings start at 7 p.m., with open-houses beginning at 6:30 p.m. before each one. Tonight's hearing is in Reston, at the Bechtel Conference Center, which is at 1801 Alexander Bell Drive. Transit on Thursday: Fare Hike Proposal Edition
WTOP's Adam Tuss is the first to the gate with news of Metro's Board of Directors having agreed today to a fare hike proposal to put forward to the public. Here's the details: >> Peak Metrorail base fares would increase 30 cents, from $1.35 to $1.65 >> Off-peak rail service would remain at $1.35 >> The maximum rail fare would jump 80 cents, to $4.70 >> If you use SmarTrip, bus fares will remain...
Morning Roundup: Drenched and Delayed Edition
Good morning, Washington. The weather-related headlines today are all generally pretty disappointing -- The Post proclaims that "Rain Likely to Dampen Area But Not Douse the Drought", and others have followed suit. But waving like a lone reed in the pessimistic sands of weather prognostication is CapitalWeather.com, who just minutes ago put up a prediction, based on a brand new model, suggesting that "several factors are finally lining up to bring the potential for...
Go Home Already: More of the Same
>> So, yeah, still no word on exactly how much that fare hike is gonna be. [WaPo] >> An Islamic activist appointed by Gov. Timothy M. Kaine to the Virginia Immigration Commission was forced to resign Thursday after videos surfaced of him making controversial statements about Israel. [WaPo] >> The end of WaWa in College Park: "Kids from South Jersey and Philly will be forever sealed off from their favorite place to get a...
Morning Roundup: Not Actually August Edition
Good morning, Washington. It's almost October, but in many ways it still seems like summer. For one thing, it'll be ninety degrees today. For another, there's news of Michael Vick's worsening legal situation. Yesterday Virginia indicted him and three others on dogfighting charges. Of course, we all knew that was coming sooner or later — less expected was word that a Canadian bank is suing Vick for defaulting on a $2.3 million loan. Potential...
Blatant Speculation About the Metro Fare Hike
WTOP says that Metro General Manager John Catoe will announce the details of his plan for a proposed fare hike at a meeting next week. We've been expecting this announcement for some time now, though specific details of the increase, which is expected to be put into effect in January 2008, possibly tied to inflation or the consumer price index and increased accordingly every January thereafter, have been scant. How much will the first hike...
Morning Roundup: An Uneasy Peace Edition
Good morning, Washington. An estimated 10,000 people attended the dedication Sunday of the official memorial for the 32 victims killed at Virginia Tech on April 16. Students at the university, about four hours outside D.C., begin classes for the fall semester today. On the same day as the dedication, about 23 Virginia Tech students living in an off-campus apartment building were taken to hospitals after showing signs of carbon monoxide poisoning. Several of the...
Transit on Thursday Friday: Fashion Police Edition
Anyone who's lived in D.C. for more than a minute or two knows that appearances are important in this town, but is it reasonable to suggest that the changing face of Metro will have an impact on ridership? Also this week, a fare hike fight gradually takes shape, and another area bridge is going out of commission. If you were one of the 500,000 or so passengers who took Metro to the Mall on...
Transit on Thursday: If You Can't Do the Time Edition
Happy Thursday, and welcome back to another post full of the best in transit news. This week, we consider whether Virginians would rather obey traffic laws or pay more taxes. It's a real Sophie's Choice, we know. Also, a few words on the latest Metro fare hike proposal from Metro. We also have Metro's schedule of weekend track work and maintenance, which will cause delays on some lines. Photo by christaki...
Morning Roundup: New Fare Hike Edition
Good morning, Washington. Usually, we get pretty excited about coming in to work only to discover that the big, unwieldy and potentially troublesome meeting that was scheduled has been canceled. That's often a gold star kind of day that deserves a special trip out for a fancy coffee, and maybe doing a little jig behind the closed door of your office, right? But we have to express some serious disappointment that this meeting appears to...
Morning Roundup: In Remembrance Edition
We start off this Monday morning with the very sad news that Star Foster, a co-editor of sister site Phillyist, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday morning. Phillyist will be going dark for a few days out of respect for Foster, who was with the site since its inception. Here at DCist, and across the -ist network, we offer our condolences and thoughts for her friends and family.
Morning Roundup: Fare Hike Edition?
Good morning, Washington. The weather today is supposed to be frigidly chilly this morning with temperatures later rising into the 40s, according to Capital Weather. Drew McDermott's recent photo of the Virginia Square metrorail station entrance seems timely considering this morning's first item ...
