FIFA Snubs United States, Awards 2022 World Cup To Qatar

In a shocking letdown for soccer fans in Washington and across the country, FIFA announced this morning that the 2022 World Cup would be awarded to Qatar. In another surprise, Russia will host the 2018 tournament. The United States, with its overwhelming number of large soccer-ready stadia and immense success hosting the 1994 tournament, was considered by many to be heavy favorites. Washington would have hosted as many as seven matches during the tournament, likely at FedEx Field. (Apparently, Councilmember Harry Thomas' appearance at the Newseum this morning didn't bring the U.S. bid much luck.) As a huge soccer fan, this DCist editor is really bummed out about the fact that he won't be able to hop on the Orange Line to go see a World Cup match in twelve years, but I guess it could be worse -- we could be England, who basically invented the modern game and was, yet again, snubbed for hosting duties despite having not held a World Cup in the country since 1966. more ›

Jack Evans Is Not A Fan Of FedEx Field

Jack Evans Is Not A Fan Of FedEx Field

The potential return of the Washington Redskins to the District of Columbia has always been a nice little crutch for local politicians to break out during football season. After all, people in D.C. like their Redskins, and appealing to their sense of hometown pride is never a bad idea, especially in a time of governmental transition and budgetary strife. Ward 2 Councilmember Jack Evans wasn't the first person to say that the Redskins should move back into the District when he recently floated the idea, and he most certainly won't be the last. more ›

Maryland, Texas Football Series Now Set for 2017 and 2018

As originally reported on DCist last month, the Maryland Terrapins and Texas Longhorns have agreed to face one another in a home-and-home series. Original reports were for 2014 and 2015, with games to be respectively held at FedEx Field and Texas Memorial Stadium. However, The Austin American-Statesman has now confirmed that the games will take place in Austin in 2017 and in the Washington area in 2018. Looks like Terp and Longhorn fans residing in the region will now have to wait an additional four years to attend this out of conference matchup. But hey, look at the bright side, college football followers -- we're just a couple of weeks away from kickoff! more ›

Terps to Take On Texas in 2014

D.C. Officially Included In U.S. World Cup Bids

If the United States wins its aggressive bid to host the World Cup in either 2018 or 2022, 18 cities will vie to host matches in what is arguably the most important sporting competition on the planet. Unsurprisingly, Washington, D.C., will be one of those cities. The USA Bid Commitee announced this afternoon that D.C. will be represented in the official United States bid book for the 2018 and 2022 finals with the inclusion of FedEx Field as a potential venue. more ›

Metro to Stay Open Late for U2 Concert

WMATA sent out word today that it will be keeping the Metro system station open late on Tuesday night in order to accommodate U2 fans coming home from FedEx Field. All stations except Morgan Boulevard will be exit-only after midnight, but those who enter at Morgan Boulevard after midnight will find both trains waiting for them at that station, and additional trains at all transfer points on the Blue Line to take them to their destinations, Metro spokesperson Steven Taubenkibel said. more ›

Home Game, Schmome Game

Home Game, Schmome Game

It's painfully clear that modern-day major collegiate sports is little more than a mask for a select few entities to make boatloads of cash from a system which in essence encourages cheating and illogical decisions, under the guise of athletic competition and fairness. That said, our thoughts after reading this headline went something like this: more ›

Madrid Hit For Three, But United Hold Head High In Defeat

             + 1 more

How different, really, are D.C. United and Real Madrid? On the surface, that's a laughable question. One has spent vast fortunes to attempt to knock off their eternal rivals; the other has only a handful of players who earn salaries that wouldn't be scoffed at on the other team. One is from Spain, a country that arguably boasts the best domestic league and national team in the world; the other is from the United States, where the domestic league is seen as little but a minnow in the worldwide football hierarchy, and the national team is in a constant uphill battle for respectability. One squad's bench contains nine players who could wipe the floor with most teams in the world by simply adding a couple guys they found on the street; the other's bench, while not untalented, would likely struggle to make it through an entire season with a winning record. more ›

Click Click: Paul McCartney @ FedEx Field

             + 1 more

Some things in life are always true. Seeing Paul McCartney in concert, even at age 67, is one of them. Sir Paul wowed a near-capacity crowd at FedEx Field on Saturday night with a mammoth, Beatles-centric 35 song set that also included hits and album cuts from his Wings era and solo career. Yes, he played (by my very unofficial count) at least 11 of those 35 songs at the then MCI Center in 2005, but not even I am going to complain about that. more ›

Live and Let You Deal With Traffic

A mere forty-five and a half years after the Beatles made their first American concert appearance at the Washington Coliseum on 3nd and M Streets NE, Paul McCartney is making his way back to town -- except tonight, the venue can fit nearly 100,000 people, is located in Landover, and tickets most certainly did not cost two dollars. My, how things change. Anyway, tonight's show should be a good reminder, traffic-wise, for local drivers in advance of the upcoming Redskins season: one should expect quite a bit of volume on the Beltway for some time before and after the concert, obviously. Those looking to avoid such vehicular unpleasantness should take Metro, although prepare yourself for delays due to track maintenance. Hey, at least by using public transportation you can bide your time by counting the number of "1976 Wings Over the World Tour" shirts in your immediate vicinity. more ›

D.C. United To Play Real Madrid in August

After months of hardly-secret negotiations between the two clubs, it's now official -- D.C. United will take on La Liga's Real Madrid in a friendly at FedEx Field on August 9. The game will likely be a mid-afternoon kickoff, and United's previously scheduled August 8 home match against Kansas City will be moved to September 9. The match will be a part of a short North American tour for the Spanish giants; the two teams last met in Seattle in 2006, a game in which United played well and earned a 1-1 tie. Steven Goff -- who, as usual with all things soccer, has been all over this story for an eternity -- also reports that current United season ticket holders are being emailed for the advance ticket sale, with prices ranging between $50 and $100, including parking. (Since it's FedEx Field, we're assuming that the face value of tickets is likely between $25 and $75. Thanks, Dan Snyder!) With this match and AC Milan and Chelsea in Baltimore on July 24, it's turning into a very nice summer for European football fans in D.C. indeed. more ›

U2 to Bring (Potentially) Wicked Awesome 360-Degree Stage to FedEx Field in September

U2 to Bring (Potentially) Wicked Awesome 360-Degree Stage to FedEx Field in September

We know: You hate U2! Hate them. Bono, especially. For all the celebrity charity campaigners in the world, he's one who has actually gotten results, persuading even ultra-right-wingers like Rick Santorum and Jesse Helms to get on board with debt forgiveness and HIV-treatment-and-prevention efforts in the world's most impoverished countries. Held his band together, sans lineup changes, since 1977. Married to the same woman for more than 25 years, a father of four, and not a single knocked-up supermodel on his resume. What a douche! more ›

Metro's Chartered Shuttle Buses Bite the Dust

upside%20down%20bus.jpgRemember yesterday, when we noted that the Federal Transit Administration's tool for evaluating the cost-effectiveness of transit projects was slightly out of whack? Well, it looks like it's got some company in the "crazy" department, with new FTA regulations that effectively end Metro's ability to operate shuttle buses from stations to highly-traveled destinations. more ›

Skins Snap Streak, Stay Alive with Win vs. Bears

Skins Snap Streak, Stay Alive with Win vs. Bears

There was palpable relief in the air at FedEx Field last night when the clock wound down on the Redskins' first win in five tries. You could’ve hardly imagined a more difficult or unique losing streak either, marked by unspeakable tragedy off the field and bad luck and poor execution on it. Last night, when things really seemed like they couldn’t get much worse for the Skins – two missed field goals kept the score... more ›

Suspects Detained In Sean Taylor Case

As the region continues to mourn the loss of Sean Taylor, some hopeful news has come to light in the search for his killer. Over the course of the week, officials have stated that they have "no reason" to believe that Taylor was anything more than the random victim of a botched burglary. However, in a story broken by the Miami Herald, a relative of Taylor's has announced that three men have now been detained... more ›

Car Racing for the Common Man

It's Saturday, and perhaps you're looking for something to do. Sure, there's book-reading, nature-appreciation or farmer's-market-visitation. But that's all a bit effete, isn't it? Wouldn't you prefer to stand around a parking lot under the merciless sun racing cars and occasionally destroying traffic cones? If so, you're in luck. The final day of Chevrolet's Rev It Up event is occurring right now at Fedex Field, and there's still time for you to go. $25... more ›

Chainsaw Dan's Got Something Up His Sleeve

Chainsaw Dan's Got Something Up His Sleeve

And it's burgers! Redskins owner Daniel Snyder revealed today that he will purchase Johnny Rockets, the ubiquitous chain-diner. With District locations in Georgetown, Dupont Circle, and Union Station, most of us are probably aware of the grease-trap's existence even if we don't quite remember many of our experiences there -- the restaurant's hours tend to attract the late-night stumbly crowd. For those of us unfamiliar with the chain, Johnny Rockets tries its very hardest to... more ›

Gibbs Names Jason Campbell as Starter

Gibbs Names Jason Campbell as Starter

Turns out we didn't have to wait one more week. In a move that's sure to be met with approval by the hordes of fans at FedEx Field who have clamored for his insertion for weeks, Washington Redskins Head Coach announced yesterday that second-year quarterback Jason Campbell would get the start against Tampa. The bad news is the move is tantamount to conceding the season. The good news is that this brings the Mark Brunell era to a close. more ›

Redskins Open Season Against Vikes Tonight

Redskins Open Season Against Vikes Tonight

Geezers need excitement. And for two of them, Redskins quarterback Mark Brunell and former Redskin/now-Viking QB Brad Johnson, ESPN's Monday Night Football premiere will be providing it as these two NFC foes duke it out at FedEx Field tonight at 7:30 p.m. For Washington, who miffed and mussed and stunk their way through the preseason, all eyes will be on the offense. Widely deemed a depthless liability toward the end of last year, a heavy... more ›

Are You Ready for Some Pasta?

Are You Ready for Some Pasta?

The Washington Redskins kick off their regular season tonight against the Minnesota Vikings at FedEx Field. Last week, the Richmond Times-Dispatch took a look at what the Redskins organization — including players, coaches, and staff members — wolfed down during the squad's three-week training camp in August: That group of 140 or so people, 88 of whom are players, chewed through 1,200 pounds of sliced deli meats, 1,500 pounds of chicken breasts, 1,200 pounds of... more ›

Holy Crap! Redskins Scrimmage!

Holy Crap! Redskins Scrimmage!

Over the weekend, Washington, D.C. renewed its Taliban-like devotion to the Washington Redskins as nearly fifty-thousand fans headed out to FedEx Field this past Saturday to watch the home team participate in a “free” scrimmage against the Ravens. The reason for the Washington Times scare-quotes is because the event was mainly noteworthy for how Washington’s Public Frenemy Number One, Dan Snyder, used the occasion to test out his latest parking lot price-gouge strategies, proving once... more ›

Stealers Updated

It's been a busy few days for the Redskins, as the deadline for roster cuts passed and the free agent signing period began. Washington sports fans might still be mourning the departure of LaVar Arrington, but the team is moving on and making some big changes. On Friday, the Skins cut five players in a last minute move to get under the salary cap. Linemen Brandon Noble and Cory Raymer, DBs Walt Harris and... more ›

MCI Center Becomes Verizon Center

MCI Center Becomes Verizon Center

When Verizon purchased MCI back in February 2005, Ask DCist pondered what would become of the MCI Center's name. Wonder no more; the MCI Center is slated to become -- **gasp** -- the Verizon Center by the end of March 2006. We were hoping for a more creative name, really. more ›

Two 'Skins Heading To Hawaii

Two 'Skins Heading To Hawaii

The Washington Redskins doubled their Pro Bowlers from last year yesterday as wide receiver Santana Moss and tackle Chris Samuels were named to the NFC squad for this year's game. However, for the second straight year none of the players on the Redskins defense, which is currently ranked eighth in the NFL, will be making the trip. It seems that the defense's lack of sacks and turnovers from early in the year hurt them... more ›
