The word on high from DDOT after Wednesday's massive water main break in the 1700 block of Florida Ave. is that the street won't reopen until Saturday evening, weather permitting. DDOT engineers spent today assessing the damage and came up with this time estimate. Work crews have already backfilled the large hole in the roadway, and are now preparing for the complete reconstruction of the road surface from V Street to Champlain Street. The work will also include the repair or replacement of damaged curbs and brick gutters, and sidewalk repairs as necessary.

Perhaps Mayor Adrian Fenty has already made up his mind on the great zone vs. meter debate, and he's just waiting until tomorrow to announce his decision for dramatic effect. Officials are warning drivers that roads around the 2400 block of 16th St, NW are partially closed while crews repair yesterday's water main break. This morning only one southbound lane was open in the are around Meridian Hill Park, with northbound traffic diverted to Florida Ave. At 12:45 p.m. Alert D.C. announced that the 2400 block of 16th St. will be closed for six to eight hours. Obviously this could dramatically impact this evening's rush...

Upon hearing about a water main break near Florida Ave. and Euclid St., NW, this afternoon, it was hard not to wonder how the break would impact water pressure should firefighters need to douse a blaze. As we mentioned earlier, there are more details emerging about the impact broken hydrants had on Monday's fire at the Georgetown Public Library. Fire officials are complaining that they were forced to try three hydrants near the library before finding one that worked. The first didn't work and all, and the second had very low pressure due to a water main break in the area.

After reporting last week on a slew of misaligned walk signs plaguing the city, we couldn't stop spotting them everywhere. This weekend DCist began noticing a handful of the city's "walk" signs knocked completely off-kilter. The storms and fierce winds appear to have moved several crossing lights out of alignment with crosswalks, in some cases leaving pedestrians clueless as to who has the right of way. We saw tourists, as well as long-time residents, hesitatingly searching for the proper signal at the intersection of Florida Ave./22nd St. and Q St. in Northwest. The walk signal is currently pointed 90 degrees in the wrong direction, substantially out of their line of sight. Eventually, several jaywalked diagonally across the intersection or just waited for a lull in traffic.
