Florida Ave. Won't Reopen Until Saturday Evening

The word on high from DDOT after Wednesday's massive water main break in the 1700 block of Florida Ave. is that the street won't reopen until Saturday evening, weather permitting. DDOT engineers spent today assessing the damage and came up with this time estimate. Work crews have already backfilled the large hole in the roadway, and are now preparing for the complete reconstruction of the road surface from V Street to Champlain Street. The work will also include the repair or replacement of damaged curbs and brick gutters, and sidewalk repairs as necessary.

Perhaps Mayor Adrian Fenty has already made up his mind on the great zone vs. meter debate, and he's just waiting until tomorrow to announce his decision for dramatic effect. But we think the odds are pretty good that he's still mulling it over as we type. Wednesday, October 17 is the deadline imposed by Sen. Carl Levin (D-Mich.), who inserted the provision in legislation last fall that forces Fenty to either switch to time...

For the last eight years, Conner Contemporary Art has been one of the creative hubs of Dupont Circle with its focus on emerging and experimental artists. Located on the north end, it has served as a entryway to the neighborhood, leading into the plethora of neighborhood galleries, bookstores, and craft shops. But the gallery announced today that it will soon be shifting homes to Trinidad, in the large, 12,000 sq. ft. former auto body shop...

Officials are warning drivers that roads around the 2400 block of 16th St, NW are partially closed while crews repair yesterday's water main break. This morning only one southbound lane was open in the are around Meridian Hill Park, with northbound traffic diverted to Florida Ave. At 12:45 p.m. Alert D.C. announced that the 2400 block of 16th St. will be closed for six to eight hours. Obviously this could dramatically impact this evening's rush...

Upon hearing about a water main break near Florida Ave. and Euclid St., NW, this afternoon, it was hard not to wonder how the break would impact water pressure should firefighters need to douse a blaze. As we mentioned earlier, there are more details emerging about the impact broken hydrants had on Monday's fire at the Georgetown Public Library. Fire officials are complaining that they were forced to try three hydrants near the library before finding one that worked. The first didn't work and all, and the second had very low pressure due to a water main break in the area.

After reporting last week on a slew of misaligned walk signs plaguing the city, we couldn't stop spotting them everywhere. At Florida Ave. and R St., NW, and Pennsylvania Ave. and 8th St., SE, all eight pedestrian signals were pointing away from oncoming foot traffic -- surely a dangerous state of affairs. While we originally speculated strong winds were responsible, several readers tipped us off on the most likely culprits: construction and delivery trucks. After...

This weekend DCist began noticing a handful of the city's "walk" signs knocked completely off-kilter. The storms and fierce winds appear to have moved several crossing lights out of alignment with crosswalks, in some cases leaving pedestrians clueless as to who has the right of way. We saw tourists, as well as long-time residents, hesitatingly searching for the proper signal at the intersection of Florida Ave./22nd St. and Q St. in Northwest. The walk signal is currently pointed 90 degrees in the wrong direction, substantially out of their line of sight. Eventually, several jaywalked diagonally across the intersection or just waited for a lull in traffic.

Oh, hey there, D.C. Yeah, we're a little grumpy this morning, now that the brilliance of Friday and Saturday's summer-like weather has turned into a drizzly, chilly late fall Monday morning that makes us just want to stay in bed all day. But please, don't take our failure to greet you in our usual friendly manner as any kind of slight or disrespect. Especially since, according to the Times, petty disputes are exactly the kinds...

Good morning, Washington. Get ready for another windy day, with some clouds and a high of 55 degrees. In news that should instill confidence in everyone planning to vote in Virginia on Nov. 7, a computer glitch has already been found in the electronic ballots that are to be used. It only affects the summary page and not the actual voting, or so election officials say. Senate candidate Jim Webb will appear in the summary...
